Soybean
Hello, my name is Soybean. My animal id is #211487. I am a female black dog at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 4 years 1 months 1 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a agency on 10/3/2024.
Soybean is at risk due to behavioral concerns. Soybean arrived at the care center as a stray, where she jumped socially on staff with a loose and wiggly body. In the care center, Soybean has been observed to leash bite, which is not easily redirectable, but she will take treats gently. Recently, the leash biting has become more intense. With one instance of her jumping on the handler with an open mouth and catching the handler's hand but did not break skin. Despite our best efforts by offering daily enrichment Soybean is having a hard time adjusting to the stress of the environment. Medically, Soybean has dermatitis.

What my friends at ACC say about me: My history is a mystery and my friends here do not know much about me yet! I love getting pets and - you guessed it - snuggles! I am excitable and energetic! I will need positive outlets for my energy! I'm ready to learn! I need a patient person who has the time to work on training with me. I would do best in a home without very tiny humans, although I could be open to older human children once I meet them.

She is offered treats but ignores them and is leashed without issue. She pulls a bit when exiting kennel into the room but stops when waiting for the elevator and accepts pets from handler. She takes treats from handler and takes them lightly. Soybean is walked to the street and pulls hard during her walk consistently. She will walk past people and dogs on the street without issue, and uses the bathroom outside. During Soybeans walk she attempts to jump up and mouth the leash but is straight armed briefly and stops attempting to jump at the leash for the rest of the walk. She is brought back inside and walked back to kennel, she is returned without issue.

On the street Soybean walks by the handler pulling moderately. Some members of the public are walking towards handler and Soybean. The members of the public come towards Soybean. She wags her tail and wiggles her body and pulls towards them but is kept away. Soybean relieves herself and during the walk is not observed to leash bite. Occasionally handler will offer Soybean treats which she sniffs but does not take. She is easily clipped and returned to her kennel without issue. 10/13/24- ACS reported when walking Soybean on the street, she started to leash bite and caught handler's hand didn't break skin. When in the elevator returning, she jumped on handler with an open mouth. When she was being clipped, she stiffened her body and whale eyed handler. Handler had to straight arm her. 10/6/24: Soybean is at the front of the kennel with a jumpy, wiggly body. She jumps up with a loose tail wag as the handler unlocks the door and leashes her. She is taken for her assessment where she is loose, wiggly, highly social, and play bows frequently. She allows all handling, shivering and kicking her back legs when touched along her spine. She does not take treats but shows interest in toys. When walked towards the door she flattens herself and begins scrambling her legs. When the door is open she walks out into the hallway and again baulks, scrambling along the floor. She is belly banded and returned to kennel as she jumps with her hind legs along the way. She enters the kennel and is unleashed without issue. 10/5/24: Soybean is standing in the front of her kennel as handler approaches. She begins jumping at the kennel door as handler begins unlocking her kennel door. She tangles herself in the handlers leash twice due to her jumping at the kennel door as handler attempts to leash until she is successfully leashed and brought to the street for her walk. Once outside Soybean pulls hard towards places she wants to sniff, she scans around looking for interesting scents she can find and uses the bathroom occasionally. Soybean will ignore most people passing on the street but at one point sees a passing couple and baulks in an attempt to walk back towards the couple and approach them. She wags her tail and jumps towards them socially but is kept away as MOP are not allowed to touch shelter dogs. Soybean walks comfortably behind them however and excitedly trots behind them for a bit before being brought back to the building and returned to kennel without issue.

ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on Soybean so we cannot be certain of their behavior in a home environment. However, they will need daily mental and physical activity to stay engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct their energy and enthusiasm.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: Level 4
Recommendations:: No children (under 13)
Recommendations comments:: No young children (under 13): Due to lack of basic manners and leash biting we recommend a home with no children.
Potential challenges: : Basic manners/poor impulse control,Leash-biting
Potential challenges comments:: Basic manners: Soybean has been observed to jump up on handlers in a social manner. It is recommended that default behaviors such as "Sit" and "Off" are reinforced to substitute any frustration and teach them to control their impulses instead of simply reacting; proper management is also advised. Force-free, reward-based training only is recommended. Please see handout on Basic Manners. Leash Biting: Soybean has been observed to jump up high and bite the leash. While biting the leash Soybean has been observed to accidently catch handlers hands. This behavior is not able to be redirected easily. We recommend walking them with a toy to dissuade them from grabbing the leash. Positive reinforcement, force-free training is advised to teach them to focus on you rather than grabbing the leash. Please see handout on Leash Manners.
