Animal Profile

Mazie

Hello, my name is Mazie. My animal id is #250459. I am a desexed female calico cat at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 3 years 3 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a aco - owner surrender on 3/25/2026, with the surrender reason stated as person circumstance- death of owner.

Mazie is on the at-risk list due to behavior. She is not thriving in the care center and continues to display distance-increasing behavior when approached for interactions. She has not warmed up despite staff using treats to build a positive association. Due to her stress levels, it is in her best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. She would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give her plenty of time and space to adjust, and who have experience with helping a fearful cat adjust to strangers.

What my friends at ACC say about me: I have lived with cats in my previous home. I am looking for a home with a patient person. I can be slow to adjust to new environments. I prefer to take things at my own pace. I will flourish in a calm environment and a low-traffic home. I would appreciate slow introductions to new people and places to help me feel safe. I would do best in a home with only adult humans. I prefer to call the shots and enjoy coming to you when I'm ready for pets.

Can only visual 1/3 of the cranial aspect of the p- no noted areas of hair loss but a few clumps of fur noted in free roam room A. Possible patches of missing fur r/o behavioral vs medical P. KNOWN HISTORY:: Mazie was brought in with limited information on her behavior history in a home environment. Previously lived with: 1 adult, cats Behavior toward children: No experience Behavior toward dogs: Gets along with small dogs

ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 3/29/26 FB06 Lying loaf with her paws tucked under her body, Mazie has a neutral face and eyes and her ears are forward. When I open the cubby door, she comes forward and jumps to the ledge. As she was crouched at the back of the ledge her eyes widened, ears still forward and her tail is tucked under her body. I slowly place a tray of squeeze up in front of her using the scratcher and she begins to squirm as if to run off. Removing the scratcher and just speaking softly to her, her eyes soften again and she gives some slow blinks. She also lip licks a few time as well. 3/30/26 FB79 Inside of the cubby mazie lays in her litterbox with a low body and wide eyes when i open the door; she did not tolerate any petting and darted into the main part of the kennel where she sat with her ears forward and her tail wrapped around her legs. She had no interest in any of the treats i offered and when contact was attempted again she retreated to the top part of the kennel where she swatted/striked the tool followed by leaning to bite when the assessor pet her cheeks. i created a hidey spot for her as she watched with wide eyes and low growled until i closed the kennel door. (entered late) 04/2/26 FB58 In hide - hisses as the cage door is opened with a tense face and eyes wide and dilated, ears tilted. I didn't push for pets today. I offered her an enrichment cup but she showed no interest and I left her with a catnip toy sprayed with feliway and some dry treats as well. 4/3/26 FB79 Inside of the hidey spot, Mazie sits with her eyes wide, forward ears and her tail slightly wrapped around her legs; she had no reaction when i spoke or when i tossed in treats until i brought the pointer tool in. Mazie leaned in and bit the tool and pulled her head back dragging the tool in with her and when i tried to remove the tool she bit it once again. When i returned shortly with the assess-a-hand she reached out swatting and also dragging it in the hidey since her nail got stuck on it - when i used the pointer to free her paw she continued to bit it over and over. 4/7/26 FB61 In hidey spot, body and face tense. She makes and maintains eye contact when spoken to and she hisses and slow-blinks hard. I offer her treats as I continue to speak to her softly. She does not eat the treats during or after our session. She does however sniff the catnip toy offered. Nervous mamas - needs more time to adjust. 4/10/26 FB79 Hissing when I open the kennel door, Mazie is under her hide spot with her body curled and her eyes wide; she hissed once again when I brought in the assess-a-hand close followed by pulling away from it when contact was attempted. However when I pet on her side and body, she remained/still tolerant with no further reaction. GAN

ACTIVITY LEVEL:: Subdued

VOCAL:: Quiet

CHARACTER TYPE: : Shy ,Timid,Skittish,Independent

POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:: Fearful,New home adjustment period

Potential challenges comments:: Please see behavior flyer.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : Level 3

RECOMMENDATIONS:: Adult only home

Recommendations comments:: Due to the behavior seen in shelter and needing a longer time to warm up, the behavior team feels Mazie would do best in an adult-only home where they would be able to acclimate in a calm environment.

BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: Upon approach, Mazie is perched at the back of the ledge, face and eyes are neutral, ears are forward and her tail is loose alongside her body. As the kennel door opened and the scratcher was slowly introduced, she lunged forward, hissed and bit the scratcher. As she backed up, she pressed herself into the corner, eyes are wide, face and body tense, and her tail is wrapped tightly around her body. Continuing to approach her with the scratcher, she tenses her head back and has no interest. Her eyes are fixated on the assessor’s hand holding the scratcher. She tolerates a couple of head pets. As the assessor passes the scratcher along her body a couple of times, she tries to creep away before hissing and then biting the scratcher. No pick up was attempted at this time. Mazie tolerates attention and petting but may be fearful or stressed in the shelter, and may be intimidated by small children. She may be a little more independent, and may need time to warm up to her new home. Due to the behaviors seen in the care center, we feel that this cat will do best in an experienced, adult only home.
