Animal Profile

Beef

Hello, my name is Beef. My animal id is #167246. I am a desexed male black cat at the Staten Island Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 3 years 4 months 1 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 10/11/2025, with the surrender reason stated as animal behavior - not good with resident animals.

Beef is on the At Risk list due to behavior. He is not thriving in the care center and continues to display challenging behavior during interactions. He is a high energy cat, and needs to expend energy constructively with interactive play sessions multiple. Without providing activity for his mind and body, the cat may react with rough play, potentially resulting in bite/scratch incidents. It is in his best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. He would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give him plenty of time and space to adjust, and who have experience with feline body language, overstimulation, rough play, and who have the time to invest in managing these behaviors on a consistent basis to avoid bite/scratch incidents.

Let's get to know each other a bit more...

What my friends at ACC say about me: The staff think I would do best in a home where there are no other pets. I would appreciate slow introductions to new people and places to help me feel safe. I prefer to call the shots and enjoy coming to you when I'm ready for pets. I would do best in a home with only adult humans.

ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 3.24.2023 Beef is initially friendly. He came up to the kennel door & initiated contact with staff. He allowed petting & head scratches. When staff attempted to take litterbox out he became aggressive, actively watching staff & seemed upset. Once litterbox was replaced he calmed down. 10/14/2025 Beef is laying on top of his kuranda bed with neutral body language as staff arrives. He rolls over and stretches out, extending his paws as cleaning procedures are completed. Treats are used to lure him through the portal to the other side of the kennel. He watches staff's movements closely. As the interaction ends, Beef hisses and moves to the corner of the kennel. 10/20 Beef is at the front of his kennel when staff approaches. He headbutts the kennel bars and staff pets him through the door. He is offered frozen enrichment which he ignores. he continues to solicit attention, headbutting staffs hands. Later, staff interacts with the kennel diagonal from Beef and Beef hisses at staff. When staff turns their attention back to Beef, he meows and headbutts the kennel door. Staff gives him a few more pets and ends the interaction there. 10.29.25 Beef is laying curled up in his kennel. An extendable scratcher is offered out to him and he sniffs it. He is given pets on his head and cheeks. Beef leans into the scratcher and lays his head down. Staff pets along his body and he tolerates all handling. When the scratcher is pulled away, he immediately lifts his head up. Staff offers their fingers out to him through the bars. He sniffs them. Staff gives him a quick pet on his head. 11/4 Beef displays soft eyes and body when staff is at a distance. When staff begins to clean kennel adjacent kennel, Beef begins to growl and hiss when staff gets close. He swats and hisses when staff is trying lock kennel next to him. 11/5 As staff arrives, Beef is sitting at the front of his kennel meowing and rubbing on kennel bars. Staff offers a few head pets which he leans into. Staff gives AM wet, Beef eats eagerly. Staff later returns to clean; Beef is rubbing on kennel bars and sitting towards the front meowing. Staff extends a finger and beef rubs on it. Staff offers head pets, chin rubs, and full body pets which he leans into. Beef stays in main area of kennel, watching as staff cleans. Staff offers crunchy treats which he eagerly reaches for, moving to a different area with no problem. Staff finishes cleaning and Beef goes back into main area of kennel. ACTIVITY LEVEL:: Lively

VOCAL:: Talkative

CHARACTER TYPE: : Bold,People oriented,Curious,Independent

POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:: Overstimulation,Rough play,New home adjustment period

Potential challenges comments:: Overstimulated: Owner should be counseled on overstimulation and noticing body language cues that could prevent escalation.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : Level 4

RECOMMENDATIONS:: Single-pet home,Adult only home

Recommendations comments:: Due to behavior reported, recommend that beef be the only pet in the home.

BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: Beef is in the front of is kennel as hisses at staff. As assessor attempts to unlock kennel he swats and begins to growl. Scratch tool is extended, Beef stops growling and slowly approaches sniffing at he tool. He displays a high tail and soft eyes. Beef begins to slowly rub his face against scratch tool with a high tail. He leans into tool repeatedly. When a finger is presented, Beef retreats to the back of is kennel hiding under his kuranda bed growling. Beef was laying down in the kennel against the door. He began to meow and approached the door when it was opened. He had a high straight tail and was purring rubbing against the kennel door and trying to jump out of kennel. He allowed petting on his head and down his body while purring. Due to him trying to escape the kennel pick up was not attempted at this time. Beef is not open to interaction at this time and does not currently tolerate petting or handling. Because his previous owner reports she is tolerant but plays rough in a home environment, we believe the behavior seen in the care center is shelter-specific and this cat would make a great pet, but is really struggling in the shelter environment. This cat is suitable for adopters with previous cat experience who are willing to work with a cat who needs time and patience to help him/her adjust to their new home.
