Summary (7):: 10/18/24: Rango got away from a handler while in the yard. He pushed open the door and ran through the hallways. He was jumping up on a staff member he encountered in a social manner and re-leashed and returned to kennel. 10/14/24: Rango is at the front of the kennel with a loose wiggly body when handler approaches. He begins to paw at the door as handler unlocks it. Rango is easily leashed and taken to the driveway. Rango pulls mildly towards the driveway and while he is out he intermittently jumps up on the handler seeking treats. This behavior is easily redirectable and the handler rewards him for four in the floor and eye contact. Rango sniffs around the driveway before continuing to jumps up on the handler. Handler jogs Rango back into kennel, he baulks slightly before entering the kennel. 10/9/24: Rango Django Bango is standing in the front of his kennel as handler approaches. She is leashed without issue and taken for a walk in the backyard. Once outside handler offers them treats but he ignores them. While outside he is exuberant and jumps around on handler. When seeing another dog in an adjacent play yard, he approaches and begins play bowing. A second handler is called to assist in returning Rango due to his previous history of thrashing on leash. Second handler attempts to leash him but he whips his neck around quickly and throws the leash off, he does this two more times before being leashed successfully. Once returning to kennel he begins bunny hopping and jumping, once inside he begins thrashing and jumping frantically tangling himself in on of the leashes, he is returned to kennel successfully.

ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on Rango Django Bango so we cannot be certain of their behavior in a home environment. However, they will need daily mental and physical activity to stay engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct their energy and enthusiasm.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only

Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Place with a New Hope partner

Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to bite history and lack of basic manners we recommend a home with no children. We recommend placement with a New Hope rescue partner who is able to provide an experienced, adult-only foster home. Force-free, reward based training and/or consultation with a professional trainer/behaviorist is highly recommended.

Potential challenges: : Basic manners/poor impulse control,Fearful,Bite history (human)

Potential challenges comments:: Basic Manners: Rango has been observed to jump up on handlers in a social seeming manner. It is recommended that default behaviors such as "Sit" and "Off" are reinforced to substitute any frustration and teach them to control their impulses instead of simply reacting; proper management is also advised. Force-free, reward-based training only is recommended. Please see handout on Basic Manners. Fearful: Rango has been observed to thrash on leash when returning to kennel. They should never be forced to approach anything that they are uncomfortable with or submit to petting or handling. It should always be their choice to approach a new person or thing. Rango would do best in an initially calm and quiet home environment and should be given time to acclimate to their new surroundings. Please see handout on Decompression Period. Bite History(Human): Please see bite history above for more information. Please see handout on Bite History and Potential for Future Aggression.
