Animal Profile

Biggie

Hello, my name is Biggie . My animal id is #225564. I am a male blue merle dog at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 2 years 1 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a agency on 4/25/2025.

Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.

Pre-Screener Form

Biggie is at risk due to behavioral concerns. He was surrendered as a stray, and it was reported that he bit a police officer multiple times when they attempted to pick up his leash, however the details of the officers injuries was difficult to verify. In the Care Centers, Biggie has been neutral with most staff, though he did display tense body language and hovered over a toy when a handler approached. Medically, Biggie has Brachycephalic Syndrome and is apparently healthy.

Biggie is reported to have bitten a police officer during his pick up when they picked up his leash. It was reported that he escalated to biting them on their right ankle and left knee, needing to go to the hospital for their injuries but those details could not be verify. During his handling assessment, Biggie showed potential resource guarding of a toy, but he does enjoy his enrichment items and treats. Due to his behavioral concerns, we recommend that Biggie be placed in an adult-only home through a New Hope Partner that can address his challenges with a certified professional trainer that uses only positive reinforcement methods.

Summary (7):: 05/07/25: Biggie is laying down in kennel as the handler approaches. He is easily leashed and allows the handler to clip the leash to his harness. He walks moderately outside, sniffing the environment intently. Biggie intermittently stares at dogs and is offered treats but does not take them. Biggie allows the handler to switch the leash back to the ring before entering kennel without issue. Biggie then notices the medications that have been placed in his kennel and turns towards the handler, lunging and snarling. Biggie the drops back to the bars and hovers over the medications until the handler walks away 5/6 (assessment): Biggie seemed to be asleep in his kennel when two handlers approached. He stays lying in his bed and does not take treats as his door is unlocked. He does move his head away during leashing, but does not react further. He readily exits his kennel and trots beside the handler on the way to the behavior office. He ignores people and the dogs barking in their kennel, but does not pass any dogs that were out of kennel. In the behavior office, Biggie explores the room while a collar is prepared for him. A variety of treats are offered, but Biggie does not take them, periodically coughing and hacking. He stands still for collaring, but does lip kick a few times. Once his assessment is complete, he is easily leashed and walks back to his kennel. The handler waits in a quiet corner near the room while his kennel is cleaned. He sees a staff member open an office door to step out and moves closer to the handler, sitting on their foot. Thge staff member asks the handler questions about Biggie and reaches into the pocket for their phone. The quick movement causes Biggie's body to tightly clench, as he tenses, leaning closer into the handler. He readily walks into his kennel without issue. 05/05/25 (KSV): Biggie is lying on one side of his kennel, with a neutral frame, as handler approaches. Handler tosses a scented toy into the other side of his kennel, and he slowly stands up and comes over to investigate. Biggie sniffs the toy deeply for a minute and paws at it to investigate. Handler tosses in treats which he scents out and eats right away. He maintains a neutral frame throughout his interaction. 04/28/25 (KSV): Biggie is sitting in the middle of kennel with a neutral frame as handler approaches. He comes forward as handler speaks to him and takes treats gently from hand through the kennel door. He maintains a soft frame as handler tosses a handful of treats into kennel and exits. (PM) Biggie is sitting in his kennel and readily comes to the front when the handler bends to one knee beside his kennel. He rubs against the bars and accepts treats with a soft mouth before stretching and going back to laying down.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only

Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Place with a New Hope partner

Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to Biggie's high level of bite, resource guarding, and concerning level of arousal during the incident, we recommend for he to be placed in an adult-only home. Place with a New Hope partner: Due to the noted concerns, the behavior department recommends Biggie be placed with a New Hope placement partner who is able to provide an experienced adult-only foster home. A period of decompression is recommended to allow Biggie to acclimate comfortably to his new environment; force-free, reward based training only is advised when introducing him to new and unfamiliar situations. Consultation with a professional trainer/behaviorist is highly recommended for guidance to safely manage/modify any behavior Biggie presents with outside of the care centers.

Potential challenges: : Resource guarding,Multiple-bite history/risk of future aggression,Low threshold for arousal,Bite history (human)

Potential challenges comments:: Resource guarding: Potential resource guarding was noted during the toy portion of Biggie's handling assessment. For this reason, we advise against ever removing items from his possession without safely trading for an item or greater or equal value. Guidance from a professional trainer/behaviorist is highly recommended to aid in safely managing/modifying this behavior in a new home environment. Please see handout on Resource Guarding. Multiple-bite history/risk of future aggression/Bite history (human)|Low threshold for arousal: Biggie was reported to have bitten a person on their right ankle and left knee when they picked up his leash, indicating a low threshold for arousal. Although the information was hard to verify, out of precautioned, his potential foster should read the handout on Arousal and Bite History.
