At-Risk Animals


Thank you for your interest in adopting from Animal Care Centers of NYC. Our At-Risk List is posted three times a week, on the evenings of Sunday, Tuesday, and Thursday at 6:00PM and remains viewable for 42 hours.

Schedule overview:
Animals posted at 6:00PM on Sunday evening will be viewable until Tuesday at 12:00PM noon.
Animals posted at 6:00PM on Tuesday evening will be viewable until Thursday at 12:00PM noon.
Animals posted at 6:00PM on Thursday evening will be viewable until Saturday at 12:00PM noon.

If this is your first time visiting this site, please read the below information carefully.

For anyone who wishes to adopt, there is a mandatory deposit fee of $200 plus a transaction fee per animal to place an adoption reservation. The $200 covers $50 toward the adoption fee and $150 for the spay/neuter deposit. If the animal has already been spayed or neutered or is permanently waived by one of our veterinarians, the $150 deposit will be refunded at the time of the adoption. If the animal does need to leave without being spayed or neutered due to his/her medical condition, the $150 deposit will be refunded at the time they are brought back for the spay/neuter surgery or when proof of sterilization being done elsewhere is provided to ACC. If you do not follow through with the adoption, the entire $200 deposit will be considered a charitable donation to ACC's Special Treatment and Recovery Fund (STAR). Also, if the adoption fee for an animal is less than $50, the difference will be considered a charitable donation to the STAR Fund. Similarly, in-shelter pricing promotions do not apply to at-risk animals.

To complete an adoption, please click reserve on the animal of your choice. That animal will be loaded in your cart and you will have 15 minutes to complete the adoption process. In order to complete your reservation, you need to check out (top right corner). At this point, you will enter in your credit card information and a receipt will be emailed to you as confirmation of your reservation. Taki

Taki is at risk due to behavior concerns. He often pancakes or refuses to walk in unfamiliar or open areas. While he can be leashed and handled, he has shown arousal-related behaviors, fearfulness, and leash biting, as well as catching onto handlers' clothing during heightened states. However, Taki also demonstrates moments of sociability, leaning into handlers for attention when approached slowly. Medically taki is apparently healthy.

Seven

Seven is on the at-risk list due to behavior. She is not thriving in the care center. She is now displaying signs of [petting-induced aggression, boredom and frustration, overstimulation, etc.]. Due to her stress levels, it is in her best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. She would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give her plenty of time and space and who have experience with helping a fearful cat adjust to strangers.

Kit Kat

Reserved
Kit Kat is on the At Risk list due to behavior. She is not thriving in the care center and continues to display distance-increasing behavior when approached for interactions. She has not warmed up despite staff using treats to build a positive association. Kit Kat has significant dental disease and will need follow up with a dentist post placement/adoption.

Romero

Romero is on the at-risk list for medical reasons. Romero is an adult diabetic cat. We are unable to manage his diabetes in the shelter effectively. Romero should be placed in a home that is prepared to medically manage his diabetes long-term, as this is most often a life-long condition.

Twix

Twix is at risk due to behavior concerns. Twix has not acclimated well to the shelter environment and is allowing for minimal handling from select staff. In his kennel, Twix has escalated to lunging, baring teeth, growling, hard barking, and snarling at handlers. He has been avoidant of leashing at times but will accept select treats and play with toys. Once out of his kennel, Twix has displayed a concerning level of reactivity toward other dogs and unfamiliar staff or strangers. He lunges, snarls, and vocalizes. Medically, Twix is underweight, has pyoderma, and mild dental disease.

Sugar

Sugar is on the at-risk list due to behavior. She is not thriving in the care center and continues to display distance-increasing behavior when approached for interactions. She has not warmed up despite staff using the Fraidy Cat Club behavior modification program to build a positive association. Due to her stress levels, it is in her best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. She would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give her plenty of time and space to adjust, and who have experience with helping a fearful cat adjust to strangers.

Cruiser

Cruisier is on the at-risk list due to behavior concerns. Cruiser is not acclimating well to the shelter environment and has begun to not want to go back to kennel, pancaking, thrashing on leash and alligator rolling, refusing to move when being coaxed back to kennel frequently. Once outside of his kennel, Cruiser begins lunging at other kennels as he is walked out of the rooms. Once outside, he remains reactive to other dogs and connot settle. Cruiser is social with staff but is struggling despite best efforts to keep him comfortable. Medically, Cruiser has dental disease.

Harp is on the At Risk list due to behavior. He is not thriving in the care center and continues to display distance-increasing behavior when approached for interactions. Wind

Wind is on the at-risk list due to behavior concerns. Wind in care has been highly anxious, and is unable to self regulate when outside for interactions. Wind in kennel is observed to pace in a circle and jump on his kennel door, while also trying to paw, and pace side to side incessantly while staff is cleaning the kennel rooms. Wind has began to grab onto random objects such as beds, as well as being a constant high state of arousal during interactions. Wind when in this high states of anxiety/arousal, begins to grab onto random objects resulting in bleeding on his tongue and eyes. Medically, Wind is apparently healthy.

Scorpio

Scorpio is on the at-risk list due to behavior concerns. While he has become more social with staff, he is struggling to adjust to the shelter environment. Scorpio has exhibited signs of social hyper arousal, leading to poor bite inhibition and gripping onto the handlers hands with hard pressure unable to settle. Medically, he appears to be healthy.

Haystack

Haystack is at risk due to behavioral concerns. Haystack arrived to the care center as a stray and was social with staff. On intake he was noted to overstimulate quickly and leash bite. This behavior has intensified in care where Haystack will jump frequently and leash bite and is not easily redirected. He may be briefly distracted by treats and squeakers, but quickly returns to biting the leash. On one occasion, Haystack escalated his behavior to growling and tugging while biting the leash, before biting and releasing the handler’s treat pouch. Haystack has also barreled into the handler when spinning attempting to bite the leash. Medically, Haystack has CIRDC.

Helicopter

Helicopter is at risk due to behavioral concerns. Helicopter arrived to the care center as a stray, on intake, Helicopter was persistently jumping on staff and was observed to be anxious. In the care center, Helicopter continues this behavior in kennel and recently his behaviors have intensified. Helicopter is observed to be unable to settle as he paces, slams into his water bucket while hard panting and persistently barking when the the kennel room is active. Medically, Helicopter has dental disease.

Latte

Latte is on the At Risk list due to behavior. He is not thriving in the care center and is deteriorating in the Adoptions room. He is now displaying signs of petting-induced aggression, boredom and frustration, overstimulation. Due to his stress levels, it is in his best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. He would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give him plenty of time and space and who have experience with helping a fearful cat adjust to strangers.

Mimi

Mimi is on the at-risk list for medical concerns. Mimi has been having persistent vomiting and diarrhea since arriving at the shelter. It has been refractory to the usual treatments. Mimi needs a special diet trial and additional diagnostics (GI panel, AUS, +/- biopsies).

Moteck

Moteck is on the at-risk list due to behavior. She is not thriving in the care center and continues to display distance-increasing behavior when approached for interactions. She has not warmed up despite staff using treats to build a positive association. Due to her stress levels, it is in her best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. She would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give her plenty of time and space to adjust, and who have experience with helping a fearful cat adjust to strangers. Medically Moteck has mild dental tartar, but is otherwise healthy.

Blake

Blake is at risk for behavior reasons. Blake has a multiple bite history in his previous home. One bite was over food resources, this bite left 2 puncture wounds. Blake also bit a stranger who ignored the owner's warning not to pet. This bite did not break the skin. Blake lived in a multi-pet home and had one incident with another dog over food resources. In care he has allowed some handling from staff. He is becoming more difficult to return to kennel. Medically, he is apparently healthy.

Buck

Buck is at risk due to behavioral concerns. He came to the shelter as a stray and has been friendly with staff, accepting pets and treats. Recently, Buck has started biting the leash - this behavior is not easily redirectable. Treats and squeaky toys briefly distract him but he resumes leash biting both in and out of kennel. Buck also has been observed to take treats very hard in shelter - resulting in a bite to one staff member who was giving him treats. Medically, Buck is emaciated, and anemic.

Red

Reserved
Red is on the at-risk list for behavioral concerns. Red arrived to the care center as a owner surrender. In the care center, Red takes treats and allows handling. However, Red is also highly dog reactive and attempts to cage fight coming out and returning to kennel. Red has previously also jumped up and bit and released a handlers hand when attempting to leash him. The bite didn't break skin. Red remains hypervigilant on walks and reactive to people and dogs on the street. Medically, Red has an ear infection.

Daly is on the at-risk list due to behavior. She is not thriving in the care center and continues to display distance-increasing behavior when approached for interactions. Black Snow

Black Snow is at risk for medical reasons. Her intake blood work showed she is hyperthyroid. Since being diagnosed she has not been taking medication well, which puts her at risk of medical complications. Hyperthyroidism is a lifelong condition that will require medication management.

Lilo

Lilo is at risk due to behavioral concerns. Lilo was surrendered by his previous owner due to behavioral concerns in the home including a multiple bite history, resource guarding, handling/touch sensitivity, and defensive escalations toward strangers. The bites were reported to have broken skin and blood. Similar behaviors have been displayed during his stay in care. Lilo becomes uncomfortable with leashing, escalating to hard barking, growling, snapping, and lunging, and displays fearful body language when taken out for interactions. He does accept cheese slices from select handlers. Medically, Lilo is apparently healthy.

Jerry

Jerry is at risk due to behavioral concerns. Jerry has not acclimated well to the shelter environment and is displaying a concerning level of kennel reactivity. When being taken out of his kennel, Jerry begins kennel fighting as he passes other dogs making it difficult for staff to walk as he has redirected twice. One incident did result in Jerry biting a staff member's hand but it did not break skin; the other incident resulted in Jerry snapping at the handler that was assisting the staff member that Jerry bit. Medically, Jerry is apparently healthy.

Maxi

Maxi is at risk due to behavioral reasons. Maxi has been observed to be highly dog reactive, hard barking and lunging towards them. After reacting towards dogs Maxi is observed to jump towards handlers and redirect onto them. Maxi has also been observed to become easily over aroused and begin leash biting. Medically Maxi is apparently healthy.

Shiver Me Timbers

Shiver Me Timbers is at risk due to behavioral reasons. Shiver has been observed to be high fearful during his stay in the care center. Noted to have a tense body, tucked tail and show whale eye. When approached by handlers Shiver begins trembling and seeking exit. Medically Shiver has CIRDC.

Chester is on the at-risk list due to behavior. His owner describes him as independent with a low energy level. He is not thriving in the care center and continues to display distance-increasing behavior when approached for interactions. He has not warmed up despite staff using treats to build a positive association. Due to his stress levels, it is in his best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. He would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give him plenty of time and space to adjust, and who have experience with helping a fearful cat adjust to strangers. Medically Chester is healthy.
