Summary:: Due to entering the facility as a stray, there is no prior dog-to-dog history recorded. 7/22/26: Grapefruit is introduced to a novel neutered male and flags towards the fence with a tense body and square frame with a high wagging tail. She hard stares at the other dog while hard growling and barking, attempting to muzzle punch the fence. She is pulled away and continues to react towards the other dog, fixating on them with an on and off flagged and high level wagging tail, forward tense leaning body, while puffing her lips. She lunges forward while hard barking before being returned to kennel.

Summary (5):: 8/4/26: Grapefruit is standing at the front of the kennel when the handler approaches. She is easily leashed and taken to the yard. While in the hallway, Grapefruit pulls towards the pop up crates, the handler keeps her on a short leash. In an empty yard, Grapefruit has a neutral body and sniffs around the pen. When another handler enters the yard with a dog, Grapefruit lunges towards them while vocalizing and screeching. The handler steps on the leash and places their slip leash on him. She is walked back to the care center and the handler clips their leash. In the kennel room, Grapefruit pulls towards the other dogs, she is able to be returned to kennel with minimal issue. 8/01/26: Grapefruit is at the front of her kennel with loose body when handler approaches. She starts pawing the kennel door and barking when handler attempts to unlock it. She is leashed with a treat lure and exits the kennel and the room with no issues (hallway is empty with no pop-up crates at the moment). Grapefruit walks next to the handler with no interest toward other staff members. Once outside she pulls toward the gates and immediately relieves herself. Grapefruit continues walking next to the handler in slow pace with no leash tension. She tares at other dogs on the street but is redirected with treats and verbal cue. Grapefruit is not interested in people passerby. With handler she is social, allows petting, gently takes treats and leans onto them seeking more interaction. Her body remains loose with soft relaxed face. During return handler is able to pre-clip the leash and bring Grapefruit back into her kennel with no issues. 7/30/26: Grapefruit is at the front of her kennel with a soft body; she is easily leashed and brought out the kennel. The handler drops treats on the floor, but Grapefruit shows no interest; while walking past a crate, she fixates and pulls towards it, but the handler shortens the leash and pulls her away. Once outside, the handler clips their leash to Grapefruit's harness. On the street, Grapefruit walks with mild leash tension; she doesn't react to people. When she sees dogs in the distance, Grapefruit stares at them with a neutral body, but is easily redirected when the handler calls her name. Grapefruit also allows pets from the handler, sits on command, and takes treats softly. ONce inside the building, the handler clips their leash and returns Grapefruit to her kennel.

Summary (6):: 7/28/26: Grapefruit is at the front of her kennel with a wiggly body; she is easily leashed and brought out the room. While walking in the hallway, Grapefruit charges towards a dog in a nearby crate barking back; the handler shortens the leash as they walk past the crates. On the street, Grapefruit walks with mild to moderate leash tension; she doesn't react to people. When Grapefruit sees a small, she pants, whines and attempts to pull towards it, but the handler shortens the leash and walks around it. She also attempts to jump towards bicycles that ride by fast. Grapefruit also allows pets, allowing them on her head and body. Upon entry, the handler then brings Grapefruit to the yard; as she walks past the crates, she pulls towards the other crates. The handler brings Grapefruit to the yard and places her on a dragline. She initially lays on her back and rubs herself on the ground; then she allows pets again. Grapefruit sits in front of the handler, and they load their clicker, and then eventually click when she sits. Grapefruit doesn't react to any dogs or people. Upon entry, the handler clips their leash and walks Grapefruit to her kennel; she barks and pulls towards the dog in the kennel next to hers, but after the handler pulls her away and she enters her kennel on her own. 07/27/26: Grapefruit is at the front of her kennel as handler approaches, she barks at the kennel door and is distracted with treats and taken to the street for her walk. Grapefruit exits kennel and stops near the front of the room attempting to sniff an empty kennel, she is pulled out of the room and taken to the street. Outside she passes a dog almost immediately and pulls toward it with a tense body, after creating some distance she is redirected and follows handler walking with handler and passing people without issue. Grapefruit walks for a while and stops to relieve himself during her walk. After a while he is brought back inside but due to her kennel still needing to be cleaned she is brought to the yard. While passing popup crates she pulls toward them with a tense body and is difficult to redirect. In the yard he walks on leash and is eventually brought into one of the play yards and she is placed on drag leash. When dogs pass Grapefruit will pull toward them but handler holds her drag and uses treats and basic command redirect her. She eventually settles and plays fetch with handler for a bit and solicits pets. She eventually settles and lays in the grass even with other dogs in the yard. She is eventually brought back inside and returns to kennel without issue.

Summary (7):: 7/26/26: Grapefruit is noted to respond well to a treat trail in and out of kennel--no reactivity. 7/26/26: Grapefruit was observed to be severely reactive and a redirection risk (whipping head with an open mouth towards other dogs and people) when being returned to kennel. 7/25/26: Handler is standing Grapefruit's crate. Grapefruit is observed to be standing at the front of the crate over her food. She has a tense body, whale eyes and is growling. Handler drops treats into Grapefruit's crate and leaves. 7/23/26: It is reported via whiteboard that Grapefruit is severely reactive to pop ups (crates). 7/17/26: Grapefruit is laying in her pop up crate but stands by the door as handler uncovers her crate. She is easily leashed and removed from the crate. She is soft bodied and tail wag. She sniffs handler's leg then sits at their feet. She take a treat but then spits it out. She pulls towards a occupied pop up crate tense body but the dog is non reactive. Another dog in a nearby pop up crate is barking and she pulls towards them, tense body. She has to be pulled away. She is walked to the yard where she remains neutral but no long takes treats. She allows handler to pet her on the back. She folds in half (head reaches back towards handlers hand) and lip licks. Petting ceases but Grapefruit remains near handler. Handler pets again then stops and Grapefruit remains near handler. She reacts to the dogs in the pop up crates as she passes them and goes into to kennel without further issue. 07/13/26: Grapefruit is at the front of her kennel as handler approaches, she is soft bodied with a wagging tail and is leashed without issue before walking with handler down the stairs and out to the street for her walk. Outside she is neutral bodied and walks in front of handler but only pulls mildly during her walk. She stays near handler and accepts treats when called, Grapefruit walks with handler past people without issue and stops to sniff spots on the street. When seeing dogs she will stare at them briefly but continues walking when coaxed away. She walks with handler for a bit more before being brought back inside, she returns to kennel without issue. 7/13/26: Grapefruit is observed to be pulling very hard, screeching and fixating on dogs with a tense body throughout their walk. Handler kept Grapefruit on a short leash and they would persistently attempt to keep pulling towards other dogs. 7/3/26: Grapefruit is lying down and then stands up with a soft body; she is easily leashed and brought out the crate. On the street, Grapefruit walks ahead with mild leash tension; she doesn't react to passersby. The handler then brings Grapefruit inside for her assessment (see notes). Afterwards, the handler returns her to her kennel.

ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on Grapefruit so we cannot be certain of her behavior in a home environment. However, she will need daily mental and physical activity to keep her engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct her energy and enthusiasm.

Recommendations comments:: No Children: Due to her fearful disposition and need for contact on her own terms, we recommend a home with no children. Single-Pet Home/Recommend No Dog Parks: Due to the concerning behaviors that Grapefruit has shown during playgroup (see DOG-DOG SUMMARY), we feel that she should not visit dog parks and be the only resident dog. The Behavior Department recommends that she be socialized in a more controlled setting until her behavior towards other dogs can be further addressed. Reward-based, force-free training can be utilized to help Grapefruit associate dogs with things she enjoys like toys or treats. We recommend placement with a New Hope rescue partner who is able to provide an experienced, adult-only foster home. Force-free, reward based training and/or consultation with a professional trainer/behaviorist is highly recommended.

Potential challenges comments:: Resource Guarding: Grapefruit has been observed to be tense, growling, and hovering over her plate of food. Nothing should ever be taken directly out of Grapefruit's mouth, and any time something is removed they should be rewarded with a high value treat or toy. Please see handout on Resource Guarding. Fearful: Since arriving at the care centers Grapefruit has shown hesitancy with staff and is tense and avoidant during some interactions. It is important to always go slow and give Grapefruit the option to walk away from any social interaction. They should never be forced to approach anything that they are uncomfortable with or to submit to petting or handling. It should always be their choice to approach a new person or thing. Grapefruit would do best in an initially calm and quiet home environment and should be given time to acclimate to their new surroundings. Please see handout on Decompression Period. On Leash Reactivity: Grapefruit has been observed to pull hard towards other dogs in the kennel room while head whipping back and forth with an open mouth. Grapefruit will need positive reinforcement, reward based training to teach them to look at you rather than other dogs. We recommend a front clip harness to help manage this behavior.
