Animal Profile

Kerigold

Hello, my name is Kerigold. My animal id is #244991. I am a female brown dog at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 6 years 1 months old.

I came into the shelter as a stray on 1/5/2026.

Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.

Pre-Screener Form

Kerigold is at risk due to behavior concerns. In the Care Centers, Kerigold’s behavior has been deteriorating despite efforts to keep her comfortable through enrichment. She has been reported to bite the leash in her kennel and to grab and chew the leg of her Kuranda bed. Treats and enrichment were offered to help refocus her, but she had difficulty re-engaging. Medically, Kerigold has CIRDC and periodontal disease.

In the Care Centers, Kerigold's behavior has been deteriorating despite efforts to keep her comfortable through enrichment. She has been reported to bite the leash in her kennel and to grab and chew the leg of her Kuranda bed. Treats and enrichment were offered to help refocus her, but she had difficulty re-engaging. Medically, Kerigold has CIRDC and periodontal disease. Kerigold was surrender as a stray so her past behavior in a home is unknown. In the Care Centers, Kerigold has been social with staff and readily takes treats. Recently, she was observed biting the leash while kennel, becoming frustrated, and grabbing the leg of her Kuranda bed, making it difficult to remove her. She displays a low threshold for arousal and has difficulty recovering once escalated. Kerigold should be placed in an adult-only home through a New Hope Partner that will utilize positive reinforcement to address her behavior. A volunteer writes: It's unfathomable that sweet Kerigold was found in a Dollar Tree parking lot considering she is worth more than her weight in gold! A good Samaritan found her and when no one came forward to claim her, she was brought to the ACC. Upon intake, it was suspected that she is post partum due to mammary discharge. Her portly little body was a dead giveaway, and her short legs are so so cute! Though her stay thus far has been short, she has been loose and wiggly with all. Keri loves to get close and when we scooch away from her, she army crawls after us. Her preferred spot to rest her giant noggin is on our knee or in our lap and we are happy to oblige. She has been living in a pop up crate so we are sure to give her a little extra time to stretch her legs and get some fresh air. Some of Keri's teeth are worn down and it is recommended she has a dental exam upon placement or adoption. Kerigold is available for a level 2 home (some experience) due to some observed fearfulness and anxiety.

Summary:: Due to entering the facility as a stray, there is no prior dog-to-dog history recorded. 01/11/26 Kerigold is introduced to a novel male while off leash at the Care Center. She approaches gate slowly with a lowered, slightly tense frame, and wavers back and forth. She does not ever fully approach the gate. When novel male play bows, she returns a play bow but then immediately disengages, walks away, and begins to sniff along the yard.

Summary (7):: 02/04/26: ACS staff report that Kerigold is leash biting and they were unable to get her out. The handler approaches and observes that Kerigold has flipped over her kuranda bed and is digging at it and biting at the leg. She is initially not able to be called away. The handler throws treats and after approximately 30 seconds of dropping treats near her and calling her name she turns away from the bed. Kerigold readily searches for the treats and orients towards the handler to solicit more. The handler throws small handfuls of treats several times and Kerigold engages readily each time. The handler opts to give her an enrichment item and allow her to settle before attempting to remove her again. The handler returns later and Kerigold is laying down on her bed. The handler throws treats and she stands and takes them. The handler places their hand with a high value treat in the kennel first and Kerigold begins to eat it readily. However, when she notices the leash she grabs it and begins to tug. The handler throws treats and she lets go of the leash. Kerigold then immediately turns to the bed and begins to alternate between biting the leg and digging at the ground. The handler calls her name and sqeuaks a squeaker and she does not respond, continuing to dig and bite at the bed. The handler throws another handful of treats and Kerigold notices when one bounces off of her. She turns begins engaging with the treats. The handler walks away again. Handler returns later with spray cheese and another handler. Kerigold is sleeping in her kennel but stands and comes to the front upon noticing the handlers. The handlers use spray cheese as a distraction to leash her and are able to do so successfully. She walks while coughing to her new kennel and enters without issue. The handlers remove the leashes and exit the room. 02/03/26: Staff reports that Kerigold will thrash during leashing 1/7/26: Kerigold is at the front of her crate with a neutral frame as the handler approaches. She is leashed with ease and will pull mildly on the walk while she sniffs. She will take treats gently from the handler's hand. Kerigold is then returned to her kennel with no issue. 01/21/26: Staff reports that Kerigold has got to the top of the ramp but then wouldn't walk any further.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only

Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Place with a New Hope partner

Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to the Behaviors seen in the Care Centers, Kerigold should go to a home with older children. Place with a New Hope partner: Kerigold displayed a low threshold for arousal and should go to a New Hope Partner that can manage her behavior.

Potential challenges: : Fearful,Anxiety,Leash-biting,Low threshold for arousal

Potential challenges comments:: Fearful/Anxiety: Kerigold shows signs of generalized anxiety, including pacing, whining, and difficulty settling. A structured daily routine, calming enrichment, and confidence-building exercises are recommended. Providing rest opportunities, predictable transitions, and positive reinforcement for calm behavior can help reduce overall anxiety. Please see the handout on decomrpession period and anxiety. Low threshold for arousal/Leash Biting: In her kennel, Kerigold was observed to grabbed her leash while staff attempt to remove her from her kennel. She would get frustrated and grab her kuranda bed's leg as well. Positive reinforcement should be used to help Kerigold learn impulse control. Please see the handouts on Arousal and Leash Manners.
