Lentil
Hello, my name is Lentil. My animal id is #246245. I am a female merle dog at the Staten Island Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 6 years 2 months old.
I came into the shelter as a agency on 1/24/2026.
Lentil is at risk due for behavior reasons. She is deteriorating in care and will no longer walk the halls, having to be carried out for walks and socialization. Since arrival, Lentil has been fearful of walking without traction on the floor. She would hug the walls when walking. She walks well outside and has been sweet and social with both staff and volunteers. Lentil has been extremely tolerant of daily eye treatments with the medical team. Medically, Lentil has cherry eye, periodontal disease and is currently being treated for a UTI.

Lentil is a gentle female dog who was initially shy but has been steadily warming up with staff as she becomes more comfortable in her environment. With patience and positive interactions, she continues to show progress and is beginning to come out of her shell. Lentil does have cherry eye, which will require follow-up veterinary care in her future home. She would do well with an adopter who can provide a calm, supportive environment and is prepared to continue both her confidence-building and medical care. My Boroughbreaker writes: Lentil took a little bit of time to warm up (she is not super treat oriented) but slowly came out of her shell. She was good on her walk and didn't pull too much on the leash. She loved playing with rope toys inside. She vocalized some but may have been barking at her own reflection in the window! She didn't fully rest with us but she enjoyed playing and some nice pets. She particularly liked being pet by my husband and seemed most comfortable around him. She was also great around my 12yo. Overall, she is a super sweet doggie!! My #BoroughBreak Buddy Writes: With a lot of encouragement and positive reinforcement, Lentil made herself at home in no time! She loved cuddling on the couch with her head on my lap. Once she felt safe her true personality started to show. She played with toys, jumped up on the couch herself, gave tons of kisses, and did many play bows to engage in play with me and my husband. Lentil is a very sweet girl who just needs a patient handler because once she feels confident she is a lover and a fun companion.

Outside she pulls to the runs to relieve herself quickly then pulls to the big yard. In the yard she runs around and relieves herself. Another staff member enters and she accepts pets, is given a treat for sitting, and jumps up to them. BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: Level 2
Recommendations:: No young children (under 5)
Recommendations comments:: No young children (under 5): Due to some fear, we recommend a home with no young children.
Potential challenges: : Fearful,Anxiety,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration
Potential challenges comments:: Fearful: Lentil is showing signs of fear in the care center. Some fear is expected in this stressful environment. She does well with a slow, considerate approach. Please see the handout on Fearful. Anxiety: Lentil appears anxious at the care center, balking before returning to kennel. If Lentil displays anxious behavior in her future home, we recommend puzzle toys, long walks, and giving her other things to focus on to alleviate her anxiety. Positive reinforcement, force-free training only should be used. Please see the handout on Generalized Anxiety. On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration: Lentil has begun to show barrier frustration with people and other dogs. This can be due to frustration caused by the barrier itself. Please see the handout on On-Leash Reactivity and Barrier Frustration.
