Date of assessment:: 11/5/2026

Summary:: Chico has been observed to be highly fearful while in care. Noted to thrash intensely while on leash. In one instance, Chico began thrashing and muzzle punching the handler's leg. Due to the high levels of fear, stress, and anxiety, Chico is not a candidate for a handling assessment at this time.

Summary (7):: 11/4/26 - Chico Pupcup is at the front of the kennel with a neutral body, wagging tail jumping up at the door and barking, handler opens door and goes to leash, when he exits he tenses and begins pulling hard to the kennels and handler pulls him back to keep him from kennel fighting, as a result he begins to thrash and muzzle punch the handler's leg. When exiting the hall he is still thrashing and another handler places a second leash on him to assist with bringing him back as he won't stop thrashing. Return to kennel was fine, used hook to remove leashes. 11/3/26: Chico Pupcup is at the front of the kennel with a soft body and wagging tail. He is easily leashed and taken out of the kennel. Chico Pupcup pulls hard while barking towards the passing kennels. Handler shortens the leash as he is taken out towards the backyard. While doing so he begins barking towards the passing kennels and pop-up crates. Handler brings him to the backyard and he walks around sniffing his surroundings. He relieves himself a few times. Handler talks to him in a high pitched tone and begins to jump up towards the handler exuberantly, he paws the handler and they turn away from Chico. After sometime, Chico is walked back towards the shelter. He pulls hard back to kennel, barking to the passing kennels. He enters his kennel without issue. As the leash is removed, Chico begins to jump up and down and paws at the kennel door. The interaction is then ended. Intake Behavior 11/2: Intake staff requested assistance with bringing Chico Pupcup to kennel. He was reported to thrash at a high intensity when intake staff tried to bring him in. When K9 Behavior arrived, he approached the handler with a soft body and wagging tail. Chico walks with the handlers and owner towards the shelter and he is held in the lobby. When the kennel is ready he approaches the handler with a soft body and wagging tail. He walks with the handler towards his kennel, walking forward and stopping. He is taken towards his kennel where he stops and refuses to enter. Handler tosses some treats inside and he does not follow them. He sits down and looks away from the kennel entrance. A toy is tossed to him and he shows slight interest but does not move forward. Leash tension is used to muscle Chico quickly into kennel. He vocalizes and begins to thrash intensely, pushing himself back. Handler lifts him by the hips and he is placed into the kennel without further issue.

Date of intake:: 11/2/2026

ENERGY LEVEL:: Chico Pupcup is described as active and enthusiastic. They will need daily mental and physical activity to keep them engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in addition to physical exercise, to positively direct their energy and enthusiasm. We recommend feeding with puzzle feeders and food-dispensing toys. And we recommend using force-free, reward-based training techniques for Chico.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only

Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Recommend no dog parks,Place with a New Hope partner

Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to fearful behavior and on leash reactivity, we recommend an adult only home. No Dog Parks: Due to the potential for redirection, we recommend no trips to the dog park. We recommend placement with a New Hope rescue partner who is able to provide an experienced, adult-only foster home. Force-free, reward based training and/or consultation with a professional trainer/behaviorist is highly recommended.

Potential challenges: : Fearful/potential for defensive aggression,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration

Potential challenges comments:: Fearful Defensive: Chico's previous owner states that he is fearful when startled and when pushed off furniture. While in care, Chico has been observed to thrash intensely while on leash. This behavior is not easily redirected. It is important to move slowly with Chico, to build positive associations (treats/toys/praise), and to allow them to initiate interactions with new people. They should never be forced to greet or to interact if they are not comfortable and soliciting attention. Please see handout on Fearful and Defensive Aggression. On Leash Reactivity: In the kennel room Chico has been observed to pull towards the other dogs in the kennel room. When the handler attempts to straight arm him away, Chico began to thrash and muzzle punch the handler's leg. Choico will need positive reinforcement, reward based training to teach them to look at you rather than other dogs. We recommend a front clip harness to help manage this behavior. Please see handout on On Leash Reactivity and Barrier Frustration.
