Animal Profile

Winter

Hello, my name is Winter. My animal id is #224582. I am a female white dog at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 5 years 2 months 1 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 4/23/2025, with the surrender reason stated as not a fit - too many animals already.

Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.

Pre-Screener Form

Winter is at risk due to behavioral concerns in care. Winter is noted in care to kennel fighting, vocalizing, and lunging toward other dogs. She has displayed kennel stress in her kennel, vocalizing and jumping on her kennel walls and has displayed resource guarding over a toy during one of her reassessments, resulting in biting a dummy hand multiple times. Winter has shown to display affiliative behavior in low-stress settings and has responded well to training exercises in a more controlled environment. Medically, Winter is currently healthy.

Summary:: According to Winter's previous owner(s), Winter has interacted with different dogs and is often described as shy at first by warms up quick and is very gentle and friendly. 04/26/25: When off leash at the Care Center Winter is introduced to a novel female dog. Winter will approach with ears back and a nervous frame. Both dogs will scent one another. Winter will display a hackles with a tucked tail. The novel female, remaining at the gate will display play bows and demand whining. Winter will walk away displacement scenting and doesn't return to the gate. Both dogs are seperated, thus ending the interaction. 04/24/25: When off leash at the Care Center Winter is introduced to a novel male dog. Winter will approach with a fully tucked tail and a nervous frame. The novel male approaches with a flagging tail, a stiff frame and whining. Both dogs will scent one another at the gate. Winter will begin displacement scenting along the gate line, practicing avoidance. The novel male still stiff, displays a tail held straight out (in alignment with the back) and will paw at the gate. The novel male's whines intensify before he immediately bites and latches to the gate. He will let go and the handler immediately removes the novel male from the yard. This will conclude the interaction.

Summary (5):: 06/23/25 (trainer note): Winter was standing at the back of her kennel as handler approached. She approached handler with a loose tail wag and was easily leashed and walked outside. She was taken to the yard and placed on a drag leash where she relieved herself. This was kept brief due to the intense heat. On the walk back inside, she practiced engage/disengage with the surrounding dogs. She remained calm without an outburst and oriented towards the handler, though did not take treats (this could be because of the uncomfortable temperature). Handler brought her to the live room where she engaged with enrichment and practiced the 123 game. Handler sat down and Winter approached with a tail wag and accepted pets. She was easily leashed and returned to kennel. 6/22: As Winter is being walked back to her kennel, she passes another dog in a bottom kennel and she immediately lunges at the other dog. No vocalization or warnings as the handler is walking her. Winter's face and eyes are hard as the handler has to bunny hop her past the kennels towards to the door to her room where her kennel is located.

Summary (6):: 06/20/25 (Trainer Note): Winter is standing at the front of her kennel with a neutral body as the handler approaches. She is easily leashed and pulls moderately outside. Winter shows a mild interest in treats but takes them from the handler. She is able to play engage/ disengage but is intermittently difficult to move away. She plays take a breath and the 123 game with the handler and leans into contact. Winter is returned to kennel without issue. 06/16/25 (trainer note): Winter is standing at the front of her kennel with a neutral frame. She is easily leashed and attempted to dart out of her kennel as the door opened but is kept on a short leash. She walked to the live room and was placed on a drag leash. She took her time exploring the room and engaging with the enrichment items. Her body remained neutral and her demeanor aloof. She was able to orient towards the handler and practice breathwork and the 123 game. She was easily leashed and returned to kennel without issue. 6/13/25: Winter is reported to be kennel fighting exiting kennel rooms. 6/11 (reassessment): Winter is hard barking and jumping on her kennel door. She stops when the handler reaches her kennel. Winter readily accepts treats and is easily leashed. She does attempt to rush toward a kennel, but she is unsuccessful due to the handler's fast pace and short lead. She is brought to the behavior office for a reassessment, but Winter makes another attempt to rush toward barking dogs in crates. When the handler attempts to clip her collar with a drag using treats, Winter ignores them. She continues to wander before stopping to sniff the column, the movement startles Winter, and she drops to the ground whale eyeing the handler. She recovers quickly and approaches when offered treats again. Once clipped, she is given another few moments to settle before beginning the reassessment. Towards the end of the assessment, Winter begins guarding a toy. She initially grabs the toy and takes a few steps back, body tense and low. When she sees the prop hand, Winter escalates to biting and holding the hand for 2-3 seconds, to biting multiple times. Her assessment is immediately ended, and she's returned to her kennel. 06/11/25 (Trainer Note): Winter is sitting at the front of her kennel with a neutral body as the handler approaches. She is easily leashed and pulls mildly to the canine training room. She stares at dogs but does not escalate further. Winter does not take treats, but leans into contact. She is returned to kennel without issue.

Summary (7):: 06/04/25 (Trainer Note): Winter is sitting at the front of her kennel with a neutral body as the handler approaches. She is easily leashed and pulls mildly to the canine training room. Winter engages readily in the various enrichment items, orienting towards the handler and taking a breath before moving onto the next one. Handler then pulls her off to the side and works with her on the 123 game and taking a breath on cue. Winter engages readily and leans into contact with a soft body. She is returned to kennel without issue. 05/28/25 (trainer note): Winter was sitting at the front of her kennel with a neutral frame as novel handler approached. She was easily leashed and walked to the live room. She was placed on a drag leash and took her time slowly exploring the room. She slowly warmed up and her body became looser and more relaxed. She took treats from handler's hands gently and engaged with enrichment. She would sit when asked and was able to take multiple deep breaths. Handler began to incorporate the 1, 2, 3 game, which Winter was able to stay focused and oriented towards the handler for the duration of. She was easily leashed and returned to kennel without issue. 5/24/25: When handlers are in the kennel room, Winter is observed to vocalize and jump in front of her kennel door. 5/23/25: Winter is at the front of the kennel on the kennel door barking with teeth display. Winter is pawing at the door as well and when the handler goes to unlock the door she remains quiet, whining and is easily leashed to be brought out for a walk. Winter outside explores her surroundings, frequently looks back at the handler and offers a sit, where she is rewarded for doing each time she decides to offer the behavior. Winter does see other dogs, and begins to tense, lunge and growl briefly at a close distance before being walked away quickly to create distance. Winter otherwise continue to engage with the handler, and is brought back to her kennel with no issue. 4/24/25: Winter is at the front of her kennel frozen, tense and trembling. Winter is coaxed slowly and allows the handler to slowly put the leash under her head, and when leashed does not move. Winter is given a second to get herself up on her own and walks out of the kennel on her own. Winter remains intensely fearful with staff, and completes her dog-dog interaction is brought back to kennel with no issue.
