Kia
Hello, my name is Kia. My animal id is #236191. I am a desexed male black dog at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 4 years 3 months 1 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a agency on 12/4/2025.
Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.
Pre-Screener FormKia is at risk due to behavioral reasons. During his previous stay Kia obsvered to escalate to attempting to bite when handlers approached to leash him. Recently Kia was returned to MACC due to a bite incident. In the home, Kia's previous owner was placing him in a crate. After placing Kia in the carrier, he lunged upwards and bit the owner on the hand causing a laceration on the left index finger and the palm near the middle finger. According to the owner, there might have been a previous bite incident involving the resident child around the time Kia was brought from MACC in September. Medically, Kia is apparently healthy.

Bite history:: On 12/2/2025, the owner was putting Kia into a carrier that can open from the top. After placing Kia into the carrier, the owner began to put the top back on. Kia then suddenly lunged upwards and bit them on the hand. This left a laceration on the left index finger and the palm near the middle finger. The owner finished securing the top and then called the police. This incident occurred at around 6 PM. According to the owner, there might have been a previous bite incident involving the resident child around the time Kia was brought to MACC in September. No official report was made, so the officers could not confirm the information.
Other Notes:: Previous stay: 9/8/25- Stray, No known history During his previous stay in the care center Kia was fearful. *Previous assessments can be given upon request*
Date of assessment:: 12/9/2025
Summary:: **12/9/25**Kia was brought to MACC following a bite incident. After the owner placed Kia in a crate he lunged and bit them on the hand. Due to the bite history and the fearful behavior obsvered Kia is not a candidate for a handling assessment at this time. **9/10/25**When brought into the assessment room Kia FKA Zenn was observed to be tense and fearful. Noted to have a tense body and tucked tail. Kia is not receptive to the different treats offered and when the handler approaches he retreats and shows whale eye. Due to the high levels of fear, stress, and anxiety displayed. Kia is not a candidate to receive a handling assessment at this time.
Summary (5):: 12/18/25: It is noted on the whiteboard on 12/12 that Kia is "crouching and shaking in back of kennel; refused to go for PM walk". On 12/17 he "allows pick up; walks but is a little scared".
Summary (6):: 12/17/25: Kia is at the back of his kennel as handler approaches, he is not coaxed forward with treats and sits on his kuranda bed with a tense body. Handler reaches into the kennel slowly and leashes Kia who attempts to burrow his head down into his blankets. Once leashed he refuses to exit kennel so handler uses mild leash pressure to get Kia out of kennel. Once outside he walks with handler down the hall and out to the street for his walk. Outside he trembles and is hypervigilant, Kia flinches when hearing sudden loud noises or birds wings flapping. After walking for a bit Kia begins jumping and pawing at handlers leg seemingly asking to be picked up. Kia is lifted and carried for the rest of his walk and back to his kennel. He continues to tremble and flinch when hearing loud noises. After a while he is returned and given treats which he gently accepts before interaction is ended.
Summary (7):: 12/9/25: Whiteboard update notes Kia does not like walking through MACC hallways, but is highly social in yard. 9/10/25: Kia FKA Zenn is laying at the back of his kennel when handler approaches. He is not interested in treats tossed. When door is opened he remains in place and does not turn his head to look at the handler. Handler tries to encourage him with baby talk and kneeling down but he does not move. The loop of the leash is gently placed on him but he remains in place. The door is opened wide and some pressure is placed on the leash but he remains. Handler gently slides the blanket he is laying on towards the front of the kennel. Once at the front he steps out. He then remains in place outside his kennel. Pressure is placed on the leash and he walks to the behavior room. His tail is tucked but he approaches handler to sniff them briefly before moving away. Zenn is hypervigilant, turning to handlers every movement. His leash is clipped while distracted. He is walked in the yard where he attempts to climb up handlers legs at times. He hops into his kennel without issue. 9/10/25: ACS report that Kia FKA Zenn will attempt to bite when handlers try to take him out of kennel.

ENERGY LEVEL:: We have a limited history on Kia so we cannot be certain of their behavior in a home environment. However, they will need daily mental and physical activity to stay engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct their energy and enthusiasm.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only
Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Place with a New Hope partner
Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to fearful behavior we recommend an experienced adult only home. We recommend placement with a New Hope rescue partner who is able to provide an experienced, adult-only foster home. Force-free, reward based training and/or consultation with a professional trainer/behaviorist is highly recommended.
Potential challenges: : Fearful/potential for defensive aggression,Bite history (human)
Potential challenges comments:: Fearful Defensive: During his previous stay, Kia FKA Zenn was observed to growl towards handlers. And was reported to escalate to attempting to bite when handlers try to leash him. It is important to move slowly with Kia, to build positive associations (treats/toys/praise), and to allow them to initiate interactions with new people. They should never be forced to greet or to interact if they are not comfortable and soliciting attention. Please see handout on Fearful and Defensive Aggression. Bite History (Human): Please see bite history above for more details. Please see handout on Bite History and Potential for Future Aggression.
