Animal Profile

Sweetheart

Hello, my name is Sweetheart. My animal id is #244251. I am a desexed female gray dog at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 4 years 1 months old.

I came into the shelter as a agency on 12/22/2025.

Sweetheart is at risk due to behavioral reasons. Sweetheart has been observed to jump up high and bite the leash. She has also been observed to jump up and mouth the handlers on the arm. In one instance, Sweetheart snapped at the handler's jacket when leaving the room. Despite our best efforts to keep Sweetheart comfortable she has been observed to show signs of deterioration such as chewing a hole in the wall. Medically, Sweetheart is overweight.

What my friends at ACC say about me: My history is a mystery and my friends here do not know much about me yet! It is unknown if I have ever lived with other animals or children. I have potential behavior challenges that staff will address with you when you meet me. I am looking for a home with a patient person. I'll need daily interaction with you as I get used to my new life. I will need appropriate toys and positive outlets for my energy. I am eager to learn and would love to keep learning cues and tricks with you! It could be with you! Click here to learn more about the adoption process!

Summary:: 1/7/26: Sweetheart greets another dog at the gate with a soft body and wagging tail. She is lip licking and pawing at the gate.

Summary (6):: 1/27/26: Sweetheart is at the front of the kennel with a loose and wiggly body and wagging tail. When the leash is presented she bites the leash. Handler is still able to get the leash over her head despite this and she exits the kennel. She holds onto the leash as she exits the room. Sweetheart jumps up high to bite the leash and mouths the handlers arm lightly. Handler redirects her with treats which is successful and she exits the building. Handler clips a leash to her harness and she walks to the street where she relieves herself. After Sweetheart is done, handler continues walking. She stops. Handler tosses her treats for a short distance before tossing treats to lead her back into the building. Sweetheart is returned to kennel without issue. 1/22/26: Reported on behavior board to be leash biting. 1/19/26: Sweetheart has been observed to chew her the wall in her kennel. It leaves a hole on the left side. 1/17/26: Sweetheart is at the front of the kennel with a soft wiggly body and wagging tail. She is easily leashed with a treat lure. Sweetheart is walked to the driveway and relieves herself, she stops walking as handler walks to the driveway to head towards the street. Sweetheart is coaxed further on the street by tossing treats, they walk a short distance before walking back to the shelter. Sweetheart is brought upstairs and she lays down in the hallway as they approach the kennel room. Treats are tossed and she stands up and follows them. Sweetheart is then returned to kennel by tossing treats. 1/10/26: Sweetheart is at the front of the kennel with a soft and wiggly body. She bites the leash when it is presented. Sweetheart is distracted with treats and leashed with treat lure. She is walked out of the kennel and taken downstairs. She relieves herself outside and tries to pull back into the building. Handler tosses her treats to coax her back outside towards the street. She is social with the handler, leaning into petting and takes treats gently. After sometime, Sweetheart is then walked back to the shelter and return to kennel without issue. 1/7/25 (Late Entry)[Playgroup]: Sweetheart is at the front of her kennel with a wiggly body as the handle approaches. She is easily leashed and brought out the room. The handler brings her to the yard where she relieves herself. Sweetheart is then brought in for playgroup (see dog-dog notes). Afterwards, the handler brings Sweetheart into the another pen, where she is placed on the drag leash. There, Sweetheart climbs on the bench and solicits pets from the handler. After a few minutes, the handler switches leashes and brings Sweetheart to kennel, returning her with ease.

Summary (7):: 12/29/25: It is reported on the behavior board that Sweetheart is not leaving the driveway and walking in the yard. 12/27/25: Sweetheart is laying at the front of her kennel but stands, with soft body when handler approaches. She is easily leashed using a treat as a lure and removed from kennel. Sweetheart is walked on the street where she walks ahead of handler slight pull on leash. She relieves herself then pulls to return to the care center. She is brought to the behavior room where she approaches handlers with a loose and wiggly body, mouthing hands at times and rolling on her back wiggling back and forth. She is easily returned to kennel. 12/26/25: It is reported on the behavior board that Sweetheart was hesitant to return to kennel. 12/25/25: Sweetheart is at the front of her kennel as handler approaches. She is leashed while distracted with treats and removed from kennel, she pulls toward the dogs she passes till reaching the hallway. She walks with handler out to the street, outside she relieves herself and turns to jump halfheartedly at the leash but gives up on her own. She is offered treats for polite walking and accepts them gently. She allows pets from handler during her walk and rolls on her back, handler then notices her harness is loose and attempts to adjust it. Sweetheart becomes jumpy and attempts to jump and lick handler socially but becomes slightly mouthy, she is easily redirected with treats and asked to sit. She again rolls over on her belly and allows handler to adjust her harness. After walking for a while she is brought back inside and returns to kennel without issue or interest in the dogs she passes. 12/25/25: Staff has reported that Sweetheart attempted to leash bite and jumped up and snapped at the staff's jacket when leaving the room. 12/24/25: Sweetheart was observed to lie down, refusing to move when being returned to kennel. Wet food is used to coax her and its not successful. Another handler arrives with a sling. Sweetheart is slinged under her hips and she is plants slightly but walks back to her kennel. ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on Sweetheart so we cannot be certain of her behavior in a home environment. However, she will need daily mental and physical activity to keep her engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct her energy and enthusiasm.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: Level 3

Recommendations:: No children (under 13)

Recommendations comments:: No Children: Due to Sweethearts exuberant nature and lack of impulse control, we recommend a home with no children.

Potential challenges: : Basic manners/poor impulse control,Social hyperarousal,Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration,Leash-biting

Potential challenges comments:: Basic Manners/Poor Impulse Control: During her assessment Sweetheart was observed to socially jump on handlers and furniture frequently. It is recommended that default behaviors such as "Leave it", "Sit/Stay", "Down" are reinforced to substitute any frustration and teach her to control her impulses instead of simply reacting; proper management is also advised. Force-free, reward based training only is recommended. Please see handout on Basic Manners and Poor Impulse Control. Mouthiness: Sweetheart has been observed to jump up and mouth the handlers on the arms. This is a behavior that should be extinguished through training alternate behaviors and lack of reward (ex. walking away whenever Sweetheart's teeth make contact with skin). Please see handout on Mouthiness On-Leash Reactivity/Barrier Frustration: When exiting kennel staff have reported Sweetheart to attempt to kennel fight with the dogs she passes and is difficult to redirect. Sweetheart may need positive reinforcement, reward based training to teach her to look at you rather than other dogs. We recommend a front clip harness or head halter to help manage this behavior. Please see handout on On-Leash Reactivity and Barrier Frustration Leash Biting: Sweetheart has been observed to jump up high and bite the leash. This behavior is not able to be redirected easily. We recommend walking her with a toy to dissuade her from grabbing the leash. Positive reinforcement, force-free training is advised to teach her to focus on you rather than grabbing the leash. Please see handout on Leash Manners. Low Threshold for arousal/Social Hyperarosual: During handling Sweetheart has shown the capacity to become aroused and jump on handlers as well as become mouthy with contact. Positive reinforcement, force-free training should be used to teach Sweetheart to remain calm when people and other exciting things are around. She should be rewarded with treats when calm. If she escalates to jumping or mouthing, people should immediately walk away from and separate themselves from Sweetheart. Please see handout on Arousal.
