Sunny

Hello, my name is Sunny. My animal id is #246385. I am a desexed male ginger tabby cat at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 10 years old.

I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 1/28/2026, with the surrender reason stated as other.

Sunny is on the at-risk list for medical reasons. He has advanced diabetes and is not eating in the shelter. He is also stressed and anxious making treating him challenging.

Let's get to know each other a bit more...

This pet needs emergency placement. Please click here to go to our emergency placement page for more information. Sunny is on the at-risk list for medical reasons. He has advanced diabetes and is not eating in the shelter. He is also stressed and anxious making treating him challenging. What my friends at ACC say about me: I'm an independent kitty who likes to do my own thing. I'm sensitive and shy. I'll need extra help from you. I would appreciate slow introductions to new people and places to help me feel safe. Sunny tolerates attention and petting but appears fearful or stressed in the shelter. He may be a little more independent and may need time to warm up to his new home. We recommend this cat go to a home with experienced cat parents. Due to the behavior shown, he may not be a great fit for young children. Any home with older children prepared to adopt this cat should conduct a thorough interaction and endeavor to monitor this cat around their children to prevent these behaviors from being reinforced.

ACTIVITY LEVEL:: Subdued

VOCAL:: Quiet

CHARACTER TYPE: : Shy ,Timid,Independent

POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:: Fearful,New home adjustment period

Potential challenges comments:: Sunny should be given a slow introduction to the home, one room at a time starting in a small room like a bathroom with food, litter and water, either because prior owner notes [reported to initially hide, actively avoid, hiss, growl with strangers but warms up within 2 weeks] and because behaviors seen at the Care Center [shy, avoidant, hides] strongly suggest that he will hide if allowed. Interact with him in this room until he seems sufficiently confident that you feel you can introduce him to the next part of the home without running the risk that he will hide. Please speak to an adoption counselor for additional information on methods to help introduce your cat to the home.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : Level 3

RECOMMENDATIONS:: No young children

Recommendations comments:: Sunny has been avoidant of contact during his stay at the care center. No children under age 5, respectful older children only. Counselor discretion.

BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: Sunny is sitting upright in his den, body tense and pupils dilated, poking his head out of the portal exit to observe the assessor as they approach. When the kennel door is opened, he ducks back into the den. Petting is attempted with the scratcher tool, and he is tolerant of petting on the head and cheeks but flinches and leans away as he is pet, lip licking repeatedly. Sunny is unable to be coaxed out of the den and continues to flinch and avoid contact throughout the interaction.
