Tofana
Hello, my name is Tofana. My animal id is #237124. I am a desexed female white cat at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 2 years 3 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a aco - owner surrender on 9/19/2025, with the surrender reason stated as animal behavior - destructive tendencies.
Tofana is on the at-risk list due to behavior. She is not thriving in the care center and continues to display distance-increasing behavior when approached for interactions. She has not warmed up despite staff using treats to build a positive association. Due to her stress levels, it is in her best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. She would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give her plenty of time and space to adjust, and who have experience with helping a fearful cat adjust to strangers. Medically, Tofana is underweight and is currently receiving treatment for a URI.

ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 9/22/25 PRIOR ASSESSMENT Tofana is hiding in her den with dilated pupils and a tense body. When the den cover is removed, she comes to the front and begins hissing at the assessor. Treats are offered to her but she does not show interest in them. Petting is attempted with the scratcher tool and brief contact is made on her head before she turns and bites the tool twice before beginning to hiss at it. 9/26/25 Vol. She was in hidey box, could see her a little. Put in treat bowl and sweet talked - she poked her head out with wide eyes and expression as if she just woke up. Approached with hard treats on scratcher tool - she gingerly ate and then pulled back a little - waiting to see what will happen next. Approached again and she ate, then slowly came out to treat bowl, eating quickly, pushing bowl to front, alert but not angry. Stayed out as refilled bowl - even licking the squeeze treat tube. She allowed one touch on the head with the tool, looking up but not reacting or moving away. Given her history, I did not want to push it - so did not try again. Tofana ate greedily and then went over to food bowl to start eating. She did not hiss, growl or swat. 9/29/25 FB47 Tofana backed up inside the den when spoken to but was very treat-motivated and gently ate treats directly off the scratcher tool, and then poked her head out of the den and ate treats directly out of the assessor’s hand. She also allowed brief touching while being a little bit hand-shy. 10/3/25 Vol In top cubby, sitting erect watching, then coiled back down. Put in treat bowl, Tofana started to come forward when room activity made me close the cubby door. She ate all the treats and pushed bowl right up front. When reopened and bowl refilled, Tofana came right up to eat, allowing scratches with tool while eating - waiting up front for refills. When bowl was empty she pulled back erect and did not allow scratches. Refilled bowl, she came, ate and allowed scratches and pulled back when done. Was able to scratch her head briefly as I was refilling bowl, scratched some more as she was eating and ended interaction. 10/6/25 Vol. Tofana was lying stretched on her side in the back of the kennel. She did a lot of lip licking when I opened the door, but she quickly calmed down when I talked to her and closed her eyes. I extended my finger for her to sniff, but she scrunched backward. I removed my hand, talked to her some more, and ended the interaction. 10/10/25 Vol. Crouched in main cage - looking not well and not happy. Put in treat bowl - she sat erect to look at it (sniffling) Allowed head pets with tool, bending head to allow. Gave a few scratches and ended interaction. -----CONTINUED IN GAN-----
ACTIVITY LEVEL:: Mellow,Moderate
VOCAL:: Quiet
CHARACTER TYPE: : Shy ,Timid,Independent
POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:: Fearful,New home adjustment period,Adult cat socialization
Potential challenges comments:: Tofana was reported to not allow handling in her previous home and was reported to avoid contact and hide. We recommend that she go to a home with cat experience, well counseled in fearful cat behavior. Tofana is an adult cat that may not have had many interactions with humans from an early age. She is very apprehensive of people and attempts to avoid human contact. It is difficult to predict if she will respond to socialization but we recommend offering high value treats and food to help build a positive association to humans. Please be mindful that older cats will require more time and skill in order for them to be comfortable around people. Please speak to an adoption counselor to learn more about socialization techniques.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : Level 3
RECOMMENDATIONS:: Adult only home
Recommendations comments:: Tofana may be fearful or stressed in the shelter, and may be intimidated by small children. She may be a little more independent, and may need time to warm up to her new home. Due to the behaviors seen in the care center, we feel that this cat will do best in an experienced, adult only home.
BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: Tofana has made some improvements since her prior assessment and was sitting quietly inside the den, alert, and sniffed treats and allowed petting with the scratching tool. In time she gave a single hiss, but otherwise remained in place. Tofana tolerates attention and petting but appears fearful or stressed in the shelter. She may be a little more independent, and may need time to warm up to her new home. We recommend that this cat go to a home with experienced cat parents.
