Animal Profile

Unk

Hello, my name is Unk. My animal id is #230712. I am a female white dog at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 4 years 1 months 2 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a agency on 6/28/2025.

Unk is on the at risk list due to behavior concerns. Unk in the care center has not been acclimating despite the best efforts to keep her comfortable. Unk has begun to leash bite when being removed from the kennel, even with coaxing, making it difficult to remove her from the kennel safely. Unk has also been observed to jump on her kennel door, panting heavily with dilated pupils. During an interaction with another dog, Unk escalated to biting the other dog on its left ear once their bodies touched after initially being separated due to the other dog's prolonged sniffing of her genitals. The bite resulted in 1 puncture and a small cut, drawing blood. Medically, Unk has a fractured canine tooth.

What my friends at ACC say about me: My history is a mystery and my friends here do not know much about me yet! It is unknown if I have ever lived with other animals or children. I prefer to call the shots and enjoy coming to you when I'm ready for pets. I would do best in a home without very tiny humans, although I could be open to older human children once I meet them. A volunteer writes: Unk is a silly name for a silly, but undeniably endearing girl. Unk has the legs of a basset hound, short and tiny and her normal sized body makes them look all the more ridiculous. Walking down the hallway with Unk, you can't help but smile at her trot. In the yard, she hops quickly onto the bench, splooting out completely with a toy to sit with. Unk was found by the police as a stray, and they wrote down "Unk" as her name as an abbreviation for Unknown - but it stuck! Now she has a silly name to match her silly shaped body. Unk has been reactive to other dogs in our care and she is looking for an experienced adopter to help her settle into a new home.

Means of surrender (length of time in previous home):: Stray(Unknown history)

Other Notes:: Unk was being introduced to a male novel dog on leash in the behavior office for an updated dog-dog interaction. Unk's body was initially neutral and the male dog body was soft. As the novel male dog approached, he placed his head over Unk's neck before scenting her genitals. Unk tenses as the novel male dog sniffs; handlers see this and move the dog away from each other. Once separated, Unk's body relaxes, and she re-approaches the male dog. The dogs are maneuvered around each other slowly. Once their bodies touch, Unk bites the novel male dogs left ear, breaking skin and drawing blood. Resulting in 1 puncture and a small superficial cut.

Summary:: Due to entering the facility as a stray, there is no prior dog-to-dog history recorded. 07/06/25 Unk is introduced at the gate to a novel male dog while off leash at the care center. Unk doesn't approach the gate, displaying a stiff frame as she is reluctant to come forward. Unk is initially attempting to practice avoidance, keeping her distance from the gate, along with displaying look aways. As the novel male dog remains self-present, lingering at the gate, Unk becomes frustrated, lunging forward at the gate and snarling. Unk is quickly moved away as the novel male dog seeks handler's attention. Unk is returned to kennel, concluding the interaction.

Summary (5):: 08/12/25: Unk is standing at the front of kennel with a loose frame as handler approaches. She jumps up, placing her front paws onto the kennel door but is refocused with treats and leashed with ease. Unk pulls mildly to the play yard where she is clipped to a drag lead and free to explore the space. She readily engages with a snuffle mat offered to her, and will chase tossed tennis balls, jumping into the pool to retrieve them. Unk spends several minutes engaging with handlers and the pool. After her session, she exits the yard, pulling hard back toward the Care Center. Handler stops often to give her breaks and second handler attempts to slow her down with treats but she shows no interest. Unk returns to kennel safely, biting onto the leash and it is pulled over her head, but will let go for tossed treats.

Summary (6):: 08/08/25 (Trainer Note): Unk is standing at the front of her kennel with a mild pant and loose body. She is easily leashed and pulls moderately to the canine training room. She engages readily in the various enrichment items and leans into contact. Unk is returned to kennel without issue. 08/06/25 Unk is at the front of her kennel, standing on her kennel door chattering. The handler will use spray cheese to leash her, which is successful, proceeding outside to the play yard. Unk will pull while displaying a muscular frame. Unk will find toys along the way and carry them with her to the play yard. As she enters the pen, she explores, displaying a relaxed frame. She solicits treats by sitting, catching them when tossed. Unk is returned to the facility where she will enter the building with a toy she found outside, entering her kennel with no issue. 07/27/25: Unk is at the front of her kennel laying on the floor when approached, and coaxed with spray cheese which she does not eat during leashing, and is leashed with ease. Unk is taken to the live room and pulls hard, but once in the room begins to become loose/wiggly, leaning into contact and engages in a snuffle mat that is provided for her. Unk engages with the snuffle mat for some time, and when done walks over to the handler, leans into contact and begins to chase a jolly ball and play. Unk is returned to kennel where she immediately jumps on to grab the leash, but is distracted with cheese spray and lets go of the leash that she would hold. 07/23/25: Unk is at the back of her kennel laying down when the handler approaches, and when approached begins to come off her bed with a loose/wiggly body. Unk is offered a handful of treats, which she begins to eat and the handler leashes her quickly with the handful of treats. Unk is walked outside where she does not pull, explores her surroundings and relieves herself. Unk when coaxed, will become loose, lean into contact and offer a sit for more treats. Unk is readily engaged and once the handler turn the corner to back into the building, Unk begins to pull harder, pant heavy and pull all the way back to kennel. Unk begins to walk into kennel, and immediately turn around, jump on the kennel door and try and bite onto the leash. Unk begins to let go of the leash as the handler tosses treats over her head, and begins to eat them as the handler grabs the leash quickly. Unk begins to bark at the door and stand on the kennel door.

Summary (7):: 07/15/25 (Trainer Note): Unk is jumping repeatedly onto her kennel door panting heavily with dilated pupils. She repeatedly grabs the leash each time the handler tries to introduce it into the kennel and continues to pull on it until the handler drops the leash. Handler used spray cheese and Unk was able to focus on it for long enough that she could be leashed. Unk pulls hard outside, to the point that her feet come off of the ground. She maintains a heavy pant and dilated pupils for the duration of the interaction, but engages with interest in the various enrichment items. She follows a treat lure through the leash and pulls hard back to kennel, but enters without issue. Unk lunges for the leash as the handler removes it, but is not successful in catching it. 07/13/25 As the handler approaches, Unk is jumping onto her kennel door with wide dilated eyes. The handler will extend their lead into her kennel and she will latch on, pulling the lead inside of her kennel. The handler is able to toss treats and she lets go of the leash. The handler will take a toy, administer it to her and as she tugs on it, is leash simultaneously. Unk is taken out for a walk. She drops the toy before exiting the facility. As she exits the facility, she displays a rather tense frame, appearing muscular as she pulls intensely, actively searching for other dogs, pulling in their direction when seeing the, on their walks with novel handlers. Unk is easily redirected with treats and when arriving at a dead block, the handler is able to get her to focus on them. The handler will play the treat game "Up/down", making her focus on them. Unk becomes visibly relaxed, pulling less on the lead. As they approach the block of the facility however, she begins to pull intensely again, panting heavily and seeking out other dogs. Unk is returned to the facility entering the building pulling her way to kennel and then into her kennel quickly and willingly. Treats are tossed in a scatter as the handler walks away. 07/06/25: Unk is observed standing on her hind legs at the front of her kennel, anxiously hard barking while displaying a wiggly tail. She allows the handler to leash her and is then escorted to the play yard. Once inside the yard, a drag leash is placed on her, and she is set free to roam. Unk initially approaches the gate and offers a nose-to-nose greeting with her playmate, accompanied by a wagging tail. She then walks away and begins displacement sniffing. Unk re approaches the gate for a second nose-to-nose greeting, but this time she bares her teeth and growls at the playmate. The session is concluded at this point, and Unk is brought back to her kennel safely without any issues.

Potential challenges: : Basic manners/poor impulse control,Anxiety,Leash-biting,Strength/leash pulling,Bite history (dog)

Potential challenges comments:: Basic manners/poor impulse control: Unk jumps up non-stop, indicating a need for training to improve her impulse control and basic manners. Consistent training to teach her to sit or stay when greeting people, using positive reinforcement and redirection, will help manage this behavior. Please see the handout on Basic manners/poor impulse control. Anxiety: Unk began to display heavy panting, pacing and whining during her assessment. Managing her anxiety will require creating a calm environment, providing enrichment activities, and using stress-reducing techniques like puzzle toys and regular exercise. Please see handout on generalized anxiety. Strength/leash pulling: This behavior highlights her strength and the need for training to teach her to walk calmly on a leash. Using tools like a no-pull harness and consistent leash training can help manage her pulling behavior. Please see the handout on Strength/leash pulling. Leashing biting: Unk is noted to leash bite in care. Bite history (dog):Unk was being introduced to a male novel dog on leash in the behavior office for an updated dog-dog interaction.
