Animal Profile

Uni

Hello, my name is Uni. My animal id is #220491. I am a female gray cat at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 2 years 1 months 2 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 3/1/2025, with the surrender reason stated as person circumstance- cannot handle smell or mess.

Uni is on the at-risk list due to behavior. She is not thriving in the care center and continues to display distance-increasing behavior when approached for interactions. She has not warmed up despite staff using treats to build a positive association. Due to her stress levels, it is in her best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. She would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give him/her plenty of time and space to adjust, and who have experience with helping a fearful cat adjust to strangers.

Let's get to know each other a bit more...

What my friends at ACC say about me: I can be slow to adjust to new environments. I prefer to take things at my own pace. I am looking for a home with a patient person. I would appreciate slow introductions to new people and places to help me feel safe. Uni is not open to interaction at this time and does not currently tolerate petting or handling. Because her previous owner reports she is quiet in a home environment, we believe the behavior seen in the care center is shelter-specific and this cat would make a great pet, but is really struggling in the shelter environment. Due to the behaviors seen in the care center, we feel that this cat will do best in an experienced, home with adopters who are willing to work with a cat who needs time and patience to help her adjust to their new home. A volunteer writes: Uni is a gentle cat who we've told enjoys being held. We've heard she plays beautifully with other cats and especially enjoys pouncing on her toys. We haven't heard this from Uni, however, as she's also known to be a little quiet around new people. This is completely understandable but her choices when it comes to making new friends have kind of become magnified in the Care Center. Uni has a tendency to shrink from our outstretched and well meaning hands and pass the days from the safety and comfort of her den. It's true that staff and volunteers don't blink at trying to make friends with a cat sitting in their den, so we talk with Uni as she sits huddled up inside and share treats in hopes of convincing her that life is good when someone walks alongside you. Unfortunately we have yet to get a response that matches ours, but that doesn't mean we'll stop trying. Uni was brought to us with another cat and though things aren't perfect at the moment, we know they're about to turn her way soon.

The cat likes to scratch cardboard and has a preference for both wet and dry food, specifically Purina, along with Churu treats. The previous owner appreciated the cat's color but noted some behavior issues, including litter box accidents. This cat enjoys being brushed and held, and would likely enjoy being picked up. However, nail trimming has never been done, and the cat has never been placed in a carrier, so there's no information on how it would react to those situations.

ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 3/7/25 Vol. In hidey box, towards back, resting, paws out, head down, looking out, eyes a little narrow - head up, blinking when opened cage. lip licking, hissed. Put in squeeze treat bowl - ignored, still sitting in box. Sweet talked for a bit and ended interaction. 3/8/25 FB47 When cover was lifted he hissed loudly and raised himself up, when approached with scratcher tool he struck it. Suggesting for ARL. 3/9/25 Vol. Uni was inside his den,  out of eye contact range but poked head out when talked to, pupils dilated, ears neutral, and occasionally licking lips.. I extended the tool once and he did not react, but he shrunk back in further in the den without eye contact, I left two bits of Sheba sticks after he poked his head out again, and he did not move, but when I returned, he was out of the den and eating the Sheba when he saw me, he returned to the den. I extended the tool towards the portal, and he hissed. Ended interaction. 3/14/25 Vol. Glaring out of hidey box, face set, eyes slightly narrow. Hissed when opened cage, hissed when put in squeeze treat bowl. Uni watched the scratcher tool intently, not paying attention to treats. Removed tool. After a few minutes, Uni leaned almost completely out of the box to grab a few mouthfuls of treats before pulling back in. Very alert to noise and movement in room. She sat by the entry, nose and ears out, listening to sweet talk with the cage door open. Refilled bowl, sweet talked some more and ended interactions I came back to Uni later just to reinforce sweet talk. In box, glaring out. She hissed when door opened. Added to treats - no reaction. Sweet talked and ended interaction 3/28/25 Vol. In hidey box. As raised shor line, Uni stuck his head out of the box to look round, eyes normal, ears forward. Put in treat bowl - she looked at treats and scratcher tool. A person came into the room, Uni ignored them and came out to eat treats, looking up but not tense. Another person came into room - Uni ducked back into hidey box. Sweet talked a little and ended interaction.

ACTIVITY LEVEL:: Moderate

VOCAL:: Quiet

CHARACTER TYPE: : Bold,Independent

POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:: Inappropriate elimination,Fearful

Potential challenges comments:: Client has too many cats and only has 1 cat litter box for 6 cats. Due to that reason, Uni is urinating and defecating outside the litter box. Uni's previous owner reports that she was eliminating (urinating and defecating) outside the litter box, but we are unaware of what, if any, modification steps were taken to try and address this behavior. Please note as well that her previous living situation may have contributed to the behavior seen as there were 6 cats and 1 box. We cannot be sure whether this behavior will continue in a different home environment, but we recommend that potential adopters be comfortable with management and modification techniques for elimination outside the litter box should this behavior continue in a home environment. We also recommend that she be provided with numerous litter boxes throughout the house as she adjusts to her new living space. The extra boxes can be removed as she learns the space and successfully defecates in her main litter box(es).

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : Level 4

RECOMMENDATIONS:: Adult only home

BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: Uni was in the den and not visible to the assessor who extended the mirror stick to try and get a look at him and as he got the mirror in position he struck the mirror hard from the side door of the den. No further interaction was attempted.
