Animal Profile

Winnie The Pooh

Hello, my name is Winnie The Pooh. My animal id is #234478. I am a desexed male white cat at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 1 years 2 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a stray on 8/17/2025.

Winnie the Pooh is on the at-risk list due to behavior. He is not thriving in the care center and continues to display distance-increasing behavior when approached for interactions. He has not warmed up despite staff using treats to build a positive association. Due to his stress levels, it is in her best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. He would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give him plenty of time and space to adjust, and who have experience with helping a fearful cat adjust to strangers.

Let's get to know each other a bit more...

What my friends at ACC say about me: My history is a mystery and my friends here do not know much about me yet! I would appreciate slow introductions to new people and places to help me feel safe. I prefer to call the shots and enjoy coming to you when I'm ready for pets. I am looking for a home with a patient person. I'm sensitive and shy. I'll need extra help from you. I would do best in a home with only adult humans.

Details on my behavior are...

Behavior Condition: 2. Blue

KNOWN HISTORY:: Winnie The Pooh was brought in as a stray, there is no known information on his behavior history in a home environment.

ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 8/24/25 Vol. Hiding in den out of sight, away from portal. Stood up and backed up when the cover was raised, looking for an escape. Did not inspect a cup of Temptations and squeeze-up on the tool or when dropped into den. Checked back after 10 minutes and had not eaten treats, but moved to top of den. Scrunched back as far as she could when the Shoreline cover was raised - did not return blinks, just looked tense and uncomfortable. 8/31/25 Vol. Hiding in den out of sight, had not come out to eat any breakfast. Shrunk back when the den privacy cover was raised, then struck hard at the front and spat. Did not react to a cup of Temptations and squeeze-up dropped into den. Checked back after a few minutes and hadn't eaten any.

ACTIVITY LEVEL:: Subdued

VOCAL:: Quiet

CHARACTER TYPE: : Shy ,Curious,Timid,Skittish,Independent

POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:: Fearful,New home adjustment period

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : Level 3

RECOMMENDATIONS:: Adult only home

Recommendations comments:: Adult only-home due to fearfulness. Counselor discretion is advised.

BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: Winnie The Pooh was hiding in the den upon approach and skittishly retreats to the back of the den when removing the den cover, focused on the assessor with a tense body and wide, dilated eyes. He sniffs treats offered on the scratcher tool and lip licks when pet on the head and cheeks but does not engage with the attention. He looks back at the tool when stroking his body and returning to his head and cheeks for more petting. When reaching close to pet him with the assessor's hand, he hisses, spits and scrambles further back into the den. Pick up was not attempted in order to reduce stress. Winnie The Pooh tolerates attention and petting but may be fearful or stressed in the shelter, and may be intimidated by small children. He may be a little more independent, and may need time to warm up to his new home. Due to the behaviors seen in the care center, we feel that this cat will do best in an experienced, adult only home.
