Animal Profile

Karma

Hello, my name is Karma. My animal id is #235003. I am a desexed male gray tabby cat at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 10 months 3 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 3/17/2026, with the surrender reason stated as animal behavior - too unsocial.

Karma is on the at-risk list due to behavior. He is not thriving in the care center and continues to display distance-increasing behavior when approached for interactions. He has not warmed up despite staff using treats to build a positive association. Due to his stress levels, it is in his best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. He would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give him plenty of time and space to adjust, and who have experience with helping a fearful cat adjust to strangers.

Let's get to know each other a bit more...

What my friends at ACC say about me: Karma tolerates attention and petting but appears fearful or stressed in the shelter. He may be a little more independent, and may need time to warm up to his new home. We recommend this cat go to a home with experienced cat parents. Due to the behavior shown, s/he may not be a great fit for young children.

For a New Family to Know: He is described as a quiet and aloof couch potato who prefers contact on his own terms and watching from afar. He can be a little withdrawn and solitary but its mostly because he is fearful. He spends most of his time in the bedroom of his home and has a closet as a hide out wen he gets startled. He is not picky with toys and enjoys scratching on rough rope, carboard, carpet, and fabric surfaces. e eats both wet and dry food, preferably, Purina brand and enjoys Temptations or Churu's as snacks. He is accustomed to having access to three uncovered and automatic litterboxes with unscented clumping clay litter located in the closet and hallway of his home.

ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 3/21/26 FB58 Laying under kuranda bed with a tense face and body, eyes wide and dilated, body low. When I slowly offer the scratcher tool out to him with the cage door mostly closed, he looks as if he might flee but moves up onto the kuranda bed and sits hunched with eyes wide and body tense and frozen. He tolerates a few touches with the tool but remains frozen and does not engage. I leave him some squeeze up for later. 3/24/26 FB61 Hunched in back of kennel, body and face tense with his feet and tail tucked. He makes eye contact briefly when spoken to, then stares straight ahead frozen in place as I offer treats and a catnip toy. He sniffs the scratched tool when offered, however when I attempt petting him he backs away slowly, eyes wide with his tail tucked. I use the bubbles to try to engage him with visual enrichment, however he remains tense and frozen. When I check on him later I see the squeeze-ups have been eaten! 3/25/26 FB06 Karma is lying in her bed, eyes are wide and ears are turned outward. As I slowly offer the scratcher, she leans her head forward and sniffs. When I attempt to pet her head she backs it away to avoid touch. I touch her back leg and then offer the scratcher again and she starts sniffing. As I attempt to pet her head again, she backs away from the scratcher into the corner and starts to hiss at it. 3/31/26 FB61 Lying in hidey box, body and face tense with his feet and tail tucked. He makes and maintains eye contact with wide eyes as the kennel door opens and he tolerates petting along his head and body while leaning away from the assessor, ears flattened completely. He is no longer accepting treats while I'm in the room... might be deteriorating. 4/3/26 FB79 On the top of the kuranda bed, Karma is laying with a neutral body when i greet him with his tail loose - however when i speak his eyes dilate and his ears start to tilt. He remains still when i bring the tool in for pet but when i make contact he hissed harshly and his ears flattened to his head. He tolerated petting on his head and cheeks as well as down and around his body with no further reaction but his body remained still with his ears flat and his eyes wide.

BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: Karma is under his Kuranda bed with his tail loose, forward ears and slightly wide eyes when the kennel door was opened; he had no reaction when I spoke however, when I tried to bring the tool in for contact his eyes dilated as he started to look around quickly for an escape. When the tool was brought to his face for him to smell he jumped to the top of the Kuranda bed and perched with his paws straight out and his eyes wide and alert. The assessor continued to attempt petting he tensed up with and arched back, his shoulders hunching in as he pulled away and hissed harshly. Karmas ears flattened to his head as he lip licked and could be heard low growling. After a few moments of stillness he tolerated petting on his head before once again standing quickly and jumping down followed by entering the portal door with a low tail. Pick up was not attempted at this time in attempt to reduce FAS. Karma tolerates attention and petting but appears fearful or stressed in the shelter. He may be a little more independent, and may need time to warm up to his new home. We recommend this cat go to a home with experienced cat parents. Due to the behavior shown, s/he may not be a great fit for young children.
