Beauty
Hello, my name is Beauty. My animal id is #222345. I am a desexed female tan dog at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 10 months 2 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 3/26/2025, with the surrender reason stated as person health - allergies.
Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.
Pre-Screener FormBeauty is on the at-risk list for behavior concerns. Beauty arrived as an owner surrender, her previous owner describes her as a social and playful dog. During her stay in the care center Beauty has been observed to be highly fearful. Noted to growl towards handlers and snap at the leash when they are attempting to leash her. While out with handlers Beauty has been observed to remain tense and fearful, but will slowly warm up with select handlers. Medically, she is apparently healthy.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only
Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Place with a New Hope partner
Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to fearful behavior we recommend a home with no children. We recommend placement with a New Hope rescue partner who is able to provide an experienced, adult-only foster home. Force-free, reward based training and/or consultation with a professional trainer/behaviorist is highly recommended.
Potential challenges: : Basic manners/poor impulse control,Fearful/potential for defensive aggression,Separation anxiety,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration
Potential challenges comments:: Basic Manners: Beauty's previous owner states that she will jump up often or non stop. It is recommended that default behaviors such as "Sit" and "Off" are reinforced to substitute any frustration and teach them to control their impulses instead of simply reacting; proper management is also advised. Force-free, reward-based training only is recommended. Please see handout on Basic Manners. Fearful Defensive: Beauty's previous owner states that she will become fearful when held/restrained, will lunge when disturbed while sleeping, and is fearful when startled. During her stay in the care center Beauty has been observed to be highly fearful. Noted to have growl and snap at the leash. She is also observed to thrash when returning to kennel. Separation Anxiety: Beauty's previous owner states that she become anxious when left home alone. It is important to move slowly with Beauty, to build positive associations (treats/toys/praise), and to allow them to initiate interactions with new people. They should never be forced to greet or to interact if they are not comfortable and soliciting attention. Please see handout on Fearful and Defensive Aggression. On Leash Reactivity: Beauty's previous owner states that she hard bark and growl when strangers approach. Beauty will need positive reinforcement, reward based training to teach them to look at you rather than other people. We recommend a front clip harness to help manage this behavior. Please see handout on On Leash Reactivity and Barrier Frustration.
