Animal Profile

Badger

Hello, my name is Badger. My animal id is #223595. I am a female black dog at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 3 years 1 months 2 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a stray on 3/31/2025.

Badger is on the at-risk list due to behavior concerns in care. Badger in care is fearful in care, and has hard barking, reluctant of being leashed at times and avoidant of unfamiliar staff that approached her kennel. Badger has shown some improvement in care, but still consistently displays being uncomfortable with handling with staff and chooses to avoid interaction even with familiar staff. Medically, Badger is apparently healthy.

I would appreciate slow introductions to new people and places to help me feel safe. I prefer to call the shots and enjoy coming to you when I'm ready for pets. I would do best in a home with only adult humans.

Summary:: Due to Badger entering the facility as a stray, there is no prior dog-to-dog history recorded. 05/12/25 Badger is introduced at the gate to a novel female dog while off leash at the care center. Badger will approach the gate with a neutral frame attempting to greet the novel female dog. The novel female dog will not approach the gate, keeping her distance, remaining tense as Badger remains self-present at the gate. Badger will walk away, remaining neutral in frame, exploring the pen. Badger is returned to kennel, concluding the interaction. 04/10/25 Badger is introduced at the gate to a novel male dog while off leash at the care center. Badger will approach the gate and greet the novel male dog with a still, square posture. She remains self-present, remaining still, until she offers a bounce, followed by a play bow. The novel male is bouncy, reciprocating a play as she loosens up. Badger appears to become overwhelmed, disengaging, growling before she walks away, displaying paw raises. Badger will seek attention from one of the handlers present. Badger is returned to kennel, concluding the interaction.

Summary (6):: 05/15/25: Badger is jumping repeatedly onto the door of her kennel as the handler approaches. She is easily leashed and pulls moderately outside to the play yards. She allows the handler to attach a drag leash. Badger maintains a neutral body and moderate pant throughout the interaction and shows no interest in contact, even with familiar staff. She paces the yard and shows no interest in toys. Badger takes treats with a soft mouth. She is easily leashed and returned to kennel without issue. 5/4/25: Badger greeted handler at front of kennel and climbed up on glass. Handler tossed a treat to move her away from kennel door which she sniffed but didn't immediately eat. She evaded attempts to leash for some time. A second handler distracted her while handler crouched in doorway and clipped leash to collar. Badger exited kennel willingly and walked to the yard. She was switched to a drag leash and was aloof as she explored the yard. Badger remained neutral as many dogs an visitors passed by in close proximity. She approached handler when they crouched down but did not solicit contact. She engaged in fetch, chasing the toy but not retrieving it. She was switched to the slip leash without issue and walked back to kennel. Handler offered a squeaker toy. 04/27/25: Badger is at the front of her kennel, pawing at the glass and standing on her hind legs to greet the handler while vocalizing and displaying a loose frame. Badger will be leashed with ease and brought out for a walk. While outside, she will display a downward tail while hard pulling and looking around. Badger will sniff the trees and relieve herself before being escorted back to the care center and returned to her kennel safely. 04/16/25 Badger is at the front of her kennel door toe-tapping as the handler approaches. Badger is leashed with ease and taken out for a walk. Badger will quickly exit the kennel room along with the facility. Badger displays a still, neutral frame with a slight tucked tail. She is taken on a lengthy walk where she will be startled along the walk due to high winds and loud abrupt noises. Badger will allow handling as the handler pets her on her head and body. Badger is returned to the facility where she enters the building as well as her kennel with no issue. 04/09/25 A handler spots a staff member when removing Badger from kennel. At first while displaying a loose, wiggly frame, She's reluctant, but as the staff member goes slow, she steps forward being leashed with ease. Badger is still wiggly as she returns back to the kennel room after her walk. The staff member states that she remained loose during the walk while also soliciting attention from them.

Summary (7):: 04/07/25: Badger is standing at the front of kennel panting as handler approaches. Handler unlocks the kennel door, kneels down, and offers Badger high value treats. She will sniff them but otherwise shows no interest. Handler presents the lead and attempts to lure her through with treats again and a soft tone. Badger shows some confliction, coming forward to sniff handler's hand and lead, before backing up and barking. She repeats this process a few times before slowly placing her head through the lead. Badger exits kennel and walks with a slightly tense frame to the Canine Behavior Office where she is slowly clipped to a drag lead and free to explore the space. Badger spends time scenting along the room and will occasionally whine. When handler calls to her, she will loosen a bit and run over to them, placing her paws onto their lap, and accepting petting. After several minutes in the room, Badger begins pacing from door to door, exit seeking. When familiar handlers enter room, she becomes loose and wiggly 04/6/25: Badger is at the front of the kennel whining with a neutral body, dilated pupils and panting mildy when approached. Badger does not require any coaxing through the leash, putting his head through to be taken out for a walk. Badger on the walk is aloof to the handler, sniffing around the sidewalk exploring, and not reacting to any dogs or people that pass. Badger as the walk progresses begins to soften his body, and when coaxed offers slight tail wags and begins to jump on the handler in short spurts, but becomes overwhelmed and continues to walk on his own. Badger remains anxious, panting intermittently with dilated pupils and a furrowed brow. Badger is clipped and returned to kennel with no issue. 04/04/25 (PM): Badger is at the front of her kennel hard barking as the handler approaches. She backs away from the leash twice, then approaches for ham and is leashed and then taken outside. When outside, Badger sniffs every inch of the sidewalk. She is interested in people walking past but pants, has a furrowed brow and a tucked tail. She sniffs intently and pulls moderately. Badger's kennel is not ready yet so Badger is taken to the Live Room. When inside, Badger paces, pants and seeks exit. She allows petting from the handler, then continues to pace. She is walked back to her kennel without issue. 04/04/25 (AM): Badger is at the front of her kennel hard barking as the handler approaches. Badger takes cheese and then continues to bark. Badger comes towards the front of the kennel and backs away multiple times whilst barking. She is lured with cheese, leashed and taken outside, where she sniffs intently with a tucked tail. Badger will not take treats outside. Badger and the handler return to the kennel and it is still being cleaned, so they walk to the training room where Badger sniffs all around the room and pants heavily. Badger is easily returned to her kennel.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: Level 4

Recommendations:: No children (under 13)

Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to Badger's high level of fearfulness, we recommend that she be placed in an adult-only home at this time

Potential challenges: : Fearful/potential for defensive aggression,Kennel presence

Potential challenges comments:: Fearful/potential for defensive aggression: In care Badger displays whale-eyed, tail tucked, trembling, and will growl and hard bark at handlers. Gradually expose Badger to handling in a calm and controlled environment, pairing these experiences with high-value treats and praise to create positive associations. Focus on building trust by using gentle, non-threatening approaches and rewarding calm behavior. Incorporate relaxation exercises to help Badger manage his fear and reduce defensive reactions. Please see the handout on Fearful/potential for defensive aggression. Kennel presence: Badger is reported to growl and hard bark at staff in her kennel.
