She is too fixated on this to leash easily. Once she is more focused on the handler, they leash her and pull her out, but she immediately goes for the dog next to her, barking and snarling and lunging. The handler pulls her back and she begins to whip her head around snapping. She is immediately muscled back into kennel and the walk is abandoned. 6/1/26: It is noted that Canela is jumping off the walls while cage fighting in the kennel room and is snarling towards the other dogs. Summary:: Wiggly body, allowed contact
ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on Canela so we cannot be certain of their behavior in a home environment. However, they will need daily mental and physical activity to stay engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in addition to physical exercise, to positively direct their energy and enthusiasm.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only
Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Single-pet home,Recommend no dog parks,Place with a New Hope partner
Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to the high level of dog reactivity we recommed an adult only home. Single Pet Home: Due to the potential for redirection we recommend a single pet home. No Dog Parks: Due to the kennel reactivity observed while in care we recommend no trips to the dog park. We recommend placement with a New Hope rescue partner who is able to provide an experienced, adult-only foster home. Force-free, reward based training and/or consultation with a professional trainer/behaviorist is highly recommended.
Potential challenges: : Anxiety,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration
Potential challenges comments:: Anxiety: Canela is observed to be very anxious while on leash and will zig zag while the handler is walking them. If Canela displays anxious behavior in their future home, we recommend puzzle toys, long walks, and giving them other things to focus on to alleviate their anxiety. Positive reinforcement, force-free training should be used. Please see handout on Generalized Anxiety. On Leash Reactivity: Canela has been observed to be highly dog reactive. Noted to jump off the wall and snarl towards the other dogs in the kennel room. Canela will need positive reinforcement, reward based training to teach them to look at you rather than other dogs. We recommend a front clip harness to help manage this behavior. Please see handout on On Leash Reactivity and Barrier Frustration.
