Hello, my name is Sasha. My animal id is #223514. I am a desexed female white dog at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 9 years 3 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a agency on 3/30/2025.

Pre-Screener Form

Sasha is on the at-risk list for behavior concerns. During her current stay in the care center Sasha has been observed to be social with handlers approaching with a neutral body and wagging tail. She has warmed up the more time she has spent with staff. She is also observed to be receptive to treats as well. During her assessment when the handler attempted to collar her Sasha was observed to snap at the handler's arm but didn't make contact. Sasha has a history of touch sensitivity and would so best in a low stressful environment. Medically, Sasha is a healthy senior dog with the begining stages of nuclear sclerosis.

Staff using treats and slow/low pressure handling have seen Sasha blossom. This senior girl needs a quiet place to retire and show off the little goofy lady she can be when she is fully comfortable.

ENERGY LEVEL:: We have a limited history on Sasha so we cannot be certain of their behavior in a home environment. However, they will need daily mental and physical activity to stay engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct their energy and enthusiasm.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only

Recommendations:: No children (under 13),No cats,Place with a New Hope partner

Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to fearful behavior and handling sensitivity we recommend a home with no children. No Cats: Sasha's previous owner states that she will chase cats. Due to the stated behavior we recommend a home with no cats. We recommend placement with a New Hope rescue partner who is able to provide an experienced, adult-only foster home. Force-free, reward based training and/or consultation with a professional trainer/behaviorist is highly recommended.

Potential challenges: : House soiling,Resource guarding,Handling/touch sensitivity,Fearful/potential for defensive aggression

Potential challenges comments:: House Soiling: Sasha's previous owner stated that she is partially housetrained. We recommend positive reinforcement, reward-based training only. Accidents should never be punished as this will likely make the problem worse. Please see handout on House Soiling. Resource Guarding: During her previous stay in the care center Sasha was observed to growl in kennel while interacting with a kong, please see handout on Resource guarding. Handling Sensitivity: Sasha's previous owner stated that she is fearful of restraint, please see handout on Handling Sensitivity. Fearful Defensive: During her previous stay in the care center Sasha was observed to be fearful, but warmed up to handlers with a slow approach. During her current stay at the care center Sasha has been observed to be highly fearful of handling. Noted to snap at handlers when they attempted to collar her. Sasha should never be forced to interact, they should always be given the opportunity to walk away from situations or people they find uncomfortable. We recommend a slow approach and force-free, reward-based training methods for Sasha. Please see handout on Fearful and Defensive Aggression.
