Animal Profile

Chase A Bag

Hello, my name is Chase A Bag. My animal id is #257374. I am a desexed male brown dog at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 5 years 4 months old.

I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 10/9/2026, with the surrender reason stated as animal behavior - aggressive towards people.

Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.

Pre-Screener Form

Chase-A-Bag is at risk due to behavior concerns. He was returned to the care centers due to a multiple bite history. His previous owner reported that he has bitten three times in the last three months. All three bites were bite-and-releases that left punctures wounds and were treated at home. He was also described as an active and playful dog. While in care he has allowed some handling and takes treats readily with a soft body. Medically, he has dental disease.

Chase-a-Bag was first surrendered to the care center in July 2026 as his owner was not able to care for him, and was returned to the care center in October 2026 for behavioral issues. Chase-a-Bag is described as an active, playful dog who knows several cues and likes to go on 1-2 walks a day. He has shown social behavior with staff while at the care center. Chase-a-Bag is reported to have bitten three times in his previous home, twice while being pet and once when the owner was attempting to remove him from a crate. These were bite and release incidents that left small punctures and were treated at home. Chase-a-Bag is also reported to growl and snap when the owners take food from him, and to bark and lunge at children and other dogs on walks. Due to the concerns reported in the previous home, the behavior department recommends that Chase-a-Bag be placed with a New Hope placement partner who can provide an experienced adult-only foster home that can provide him with a period of decompression, necessary behavior modification (force-free, positive reinforcement-based), and re-evaluate behavior in a stable home environment before placement into a permanent home.

Date of assessment:: 10/10/2026

Summary:: Chase a Bag's owner has reported that he has bitten three times in the last three months; all three bites were bite-and-releases that left punctures (for more detail, please see bite history information above). Due to the multiple bite history, Chase a Bag is not a safe candidate for a handling assessment. 07/09/26: Previous assessment available on request.

Summary (7):: 10/10/26 (KSV): Chase a Bag is at the front of his kennel when the handler approaches. He has a loose body and gave loose tail wags as the handler talked to him. He accepted treats readily, taking time to sniff them thoroughly. He stays at the front of the kennel displaying soft body language throughout the interaction. Notes from previous stay at ACC: 07/13/26: Chase A Bag is at the front of his kennel when the handler approaches. He is leashed with ease and brought outside the yard where he is clipped to a drag and allowed to roam. He explores the yard, sniffing various spots intensely. He only occasionally returns to the handler for attention. When pigeons land in the yard, Chase A Bag chases them off. After exiting the yard, Chase A Bag barks and pulls towards other dogs passing by. When a much larger dog starts barking at and pulling towards the handler and Chase A Bag, the handler picks up Chase A Bag and carries him back into the building. While being carried, Chase A Bag does not bark or attempt to wiggle away from the handler; he just watches passing dogs with a tense body. Chase A Bag is returned to his kennel without issue. 7/9/26 (Assessment): Chase A Bag greeted handler with a loose and wiggly body at front of kennel. He was easily leashed and picked up from his top kennel and taken to the behavior room for his assessment (Please see assessment notes for details). During the walk he walked next to handler. He displayed no reactivity to dogs or people. chase was social with handlers during his assessment. He was returned to kennel with no issue.

ENERGY LEVEL:: Chase-a-Bag is described as high energy by his previous owners and will need daily mental and physical activity to keep him engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct his energy and enthusiasm.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only

Recommendations:: No children (under 13),No cats,Place with a New Hope partner

Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to Chase-a-Bag's reported behavior concerns in the previous home, we recommend for him to be placed in an adult-only home. No cats: Chase-a-Bag is reported to growl and lunge at cats by his previous owners. For this reason, we recommend a home without cats or small animals. Place with a New Hope partner: Chase-a-Bag's bite history is significant. Though the bites have not typically caused serious injury, they happen consistently and indicate a high level of stress for Chase-a-Bag when he is in these situation that escalate to biting. This is a behavior that has been rehearsed several times and will require careful environmental management to prevent bites occurring in the future, and increase his quality of life. We recommend placement with a New Hope partner who can provide any necessary behavior modification (force-free, positive reinforcement-based) and re-evaluate behavior in a stable home environment before placement into a permanent home.

Potential challenges: : Resource guarding,Handling/touch sensitivity,Fearful/potential for defensive aggression,Multiple-bite history/risk of future aggression,Anxiety,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration,Bite history (human)

Potential challenges comments:: Resource guarding: Chase-a-Bag is reported by his previous owners to growl and snap when food or treats are touched. We recommend that he be left alone while eating, and that food guarding behavior modification steps (available at ASPCApro.org) be utilized if this behavior is problematic in his future home. Nothing should ever be taken directly out of his mouth, and any time something is removed he should be rewarded with a high value treat or toy. He should be taught the "drop" cue and trade-up games. Please see handout on Resource Guarding. Fearful/potential for defensive aggression | Handling/touch sensitivity | Multiple bite history/risk of future aggression | Bite history (human): Chase-a-Bag is reported to have 3 bite incidents in the previous home. The bites have been described as bite-and-releases, to the hand, upper arm, and chin respectively, which left small puncture wounds that were treated at home. Two of the bites occurred while Chase-a-Bag was being held or petted, potentially indicating some sensitivity to handling. Please see handouts on Handling/touch sensitivity and Multiple-bite history/risk of future aggression. Anxiety: Chase-a-Bag is reported to display anxiety in his previous home, though we do not know the nature or extent of his anxious behavior. If it does appear in a future home, we recommend puzzle toys, long walks, and giving him other things to focus on to alleviate his anxiety. Positive reinforcement and force-free training only should be used. Please see the handout on Generalized anxiety. On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration: Chase-a-Bag is reported to bark at small animals and other dogs on walks. He may benefit from positive reinforcement training to teach him to look at you instead of other dogs on walks. Please see the handout on On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration.
