Animal Profile

Iren

Hello, my name is Iren. My animal id is #223888. I am a desexed male brown tabby cat at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 7 years old.

I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 4/4/2025, with the surrender reason stated as animal health - will need ongoing vet care.

Iren is on the at-risk list due to medical concerns. Iren is an adult diabetic cat that has allowed very limited handling while in our care. Iren would benefit from a quiet low stress environment so their medical concerns can be addressed appropriately.

Let's get to know each other a bit more...

Details on my behavior are...

Behavior Condition: 5. Red

Upon intake, cat was fearful but did not escalate. Minimal handling was done.

KNOWN HISTORY:: Iren was brought in with limited information on his behavior history in a home environment. Upon intake, cat was fearful but did not escalate. Minimal handling was done.

ACTIVITY LEVEL:: Laid back

VOCAL:: Quiet

CHARACTER TYPE: : Calm,Timid,Independent

POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:: Fearful,New home adjustment period

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : Level 3

RECOMMENDATIONS:: No young children

Recommendations comments:: No young children under 5 due to the fearful behavior displayed during his behavior evaluation.

BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: Laying inside of his den, Iren has his paws out with a neutral face; forward ears and almond eyes. When the assessor opened the kennel door and spoke to him softly he started to lip lick as he looked around the room and listened for the noises. When the assessor slowly brought their hand in for him to sniff he turned his head away but tolerated pets on his head and cheeks while remaining still. Iren was not interested in any treats that the assessor offered and when they reached in to pet down and around his body, Iren started to growl/grumble followed by a low hiss. Although Iren did not escalate pick up was not attempted due to not being able to be coaxed forward. Iren tolerates some attention and petting but appears fearful or stressed in the shelter. He may be a little more independent, and may need time to warm up to his new home. We recommend this cat go to a home with experienced cat parents. Due to the behavior shown, he may not be a great fit for young children. Any home with younger children prepared to adopt this cat should conduct a thorough interaction and endeavor to monitor this cat around their children to prevent these behaviors from being reinforced.
