Animal Profile

Pierogi

Hello, my name is Pierogi . My animal id is #235356. I am a desexed female black cat at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 2 years 1 months old.

I came into the shelter as a aco - impound on 8/27/2025.

You may know me from such films as...

Let's get to know each other a bit more...

This pet needs emergency placement. Please click here to go to our emergency placement page for more information. Pierogi is on the at-risk list due to behavior. She is an under socialized adult cat and is not thriving in the care center. She continues to display distance-increasing behavior when approached for interactions and is avoidant of touch, often times fleeing from the interaction. She has not warmed up despite staff using treats to build a positive association. Due to her stress levels, it is in her best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. She would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give her plenty of time and space to adjust, and who have experience with helping an under socialized and fearful cat adjust to strangers and new environments. What my friends at ACC say about me: My history is a mystery and my friends here do not know much about me yet! I have lived with cats in my previous home. I have potential behavior challenges that staff will address with you when you meet me. I'm an independent kitty who likes to do my own thing. I am looking for a home with a patient person. I can be slow to adjust to new environments. I prefer to take things at my own pace. I will flourish in a calm environment and a low-traffic home. I would appreciate slow introductions to new people and places to help me feel safe. I'm sensitive and shy. I'll need extra help from you. Pierogi tolerates attention and petting but may be fearful or stressed in the shelter, and may be intimidated by small children. She may be a little more independent, and may need time to warm up to her new home. Due to the behaviors seen in the care center, we feel that this cat will do best in an experienced, adult only home. A volunteer writes: The sight of Pierogi tucked into her box feels a little close to how her life might be at the moment. Her world has gotten smaller but still there are some bright spots of love. Pierogi's guardian passed away and when no one was able to take care of her, she found herself at the shelter worlds away from what she once knew. Pierogi was a cherished part of a multi-cat household and hasn't been very interested in the treats and pets we have to offer, choosing instead to snuggle up in her beloved box fully decorated with blankets. Pierogi's hoping to find a patient family who will welcome her exactly as she is.

Details on my behavior are...

Behavior Condition: 2. Blue

KNOWN HISTORY:: Pierogi was brought in with limited information on their behavior history in a home environment. They were known to have lived with 1 Adult and at least 10 other cats.

ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 9/03/25 FB61 In hidey box upon approach, body and face tense with ears forward and body in a loaf position. When I attempt petting her with the scratcher tool she retreats onto her vertical space immediately. I leave her some treats to explore later when she feels more safe. She does not respond to the catnip toy offered. I speak to her softly and end the session. 9/05/25 FB61 Pieorgi is hiding in a big tall hidey box upon approach, body and face completely hidden from view. She remains frozen in place when offered treats and a catnip toy. I take a peek into her box and see if she is eating her treats and I see that she is crouched with her tail wrapped tightly around her body. She ignores the treats and toy for now. Needs more time to adjust. 9/08/25 Vol Pierogi was in her bed, with just one golden eye visible to me. I petted her with the scratcher. She did not move or respond in any way. She did not eat any of the treats I placed near her. She came from a home with many cats so she may be under socialized and not accustomed to interacting with people. 9/11/25 FB58 sitting in her box with a tense face and body, eyes wide and pupils dilated - she is frozen but tolerant of touch, doesn't lean in. She appears wary/unsure of interaction and without the hide box seems tense and nervous enough to potentially flee still. 9/14/25 FB79 Super scared girly; Pierogi is inside of her hidey box which is destroyed and ripped up. She allows me to remove all her bedding and tilt the box as she runs out to the top part where I'm able to remove it. She sits with her ears flat, wide/dilated eyes and her tail tightly wrapped as she watches me move thing around/remove things from her kennel. Pierogi attempts to jump down with airplane ears as she fixates on the room behind me for an exit but when stopped she backed herself into the top corner once again and remain still/frozen as she closely watched me fix her kennel with dilated eyes. Pierogi has no reaction when i spoke to her softly, when i slow blinked or when i placed treats down in front of her. 9/19/25 Fb58 In her plastic hide box, low and tense face and body, eyes wide and dilated, ears tilted. She is wary of interaction but tolerates pets on her head with the scratcher tool, as well as with my hand! I offer her treats for her to eat later. 9/21/25 FB79 Wrapped in her linen, Pierogi has wide/dilated eyes when i slowly moved the linen but no reaction when i spoke to her or tried to slow blink at her. Today she remained very still and tolerant of all the pets as i spoke to a staff member - she tolerated slow head pets as well as chin and cheek rubs although her eyes were still wide and dilated/alert. Pierogi only decided to run away with a low body when i tried to fully remove the linen from around her body. She ran to the back where she pushed her face into the corner in attempt to hide and avoid further contact. GAN

ACTIVITY LEVEL:: Subdued

VOCAL:: Quiet

CHARACTER TYPE: : Shy ,Timid,Skittish,Independent

POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:: Fearful,New home adjustment period,Adult cat socialization

Potential challenges comments:: Pierogi came from a home with about 10+ other cats, it is likely that she was not appropriately socialized to humans.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : Level 3

RECOMMENDATIONS:: Adult only home

Recommendations comments:: Due to the behavior seen in shelter and needing a longer time to warm up, the behavior team feels Pierogi would do best in an adult-only home where they would be able to acclimate in a calm environment.

BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: On approach, Pierogi was in her hide box and hidden from view - when the box is turned, she is sitting loafed with a tense face and body, eyes wide and pupils dilated. She sniffs the scratcher tool when offered but remains tense and frozen. She is tolerant of touch but doesn't lean in. She tolerates a few pets on her head with the assessor's hand before she jerks away. Pick up is not attempted. 9/30/25 Pierogi displayed similar behaviors during her reassessment. Pierogi tolerates attention and petting but may be fearful or stressed in the shelter, and may be intimidated by small children. She may be a little more independent, and may need time to warm up to her new home. Due to the behaviors seen in the care center, we feel that this cat will do best in an experienced, adult only home.
