Animal Profile

Ice

Hello, my name is Ice. My animal id is #218338. I am a male black dog at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 3 years 2 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a aco - impound on 1/10/2025.

Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.

Pre-Screener Form

Ice is on the at-risk list due to behavior concerns. Ice in care has began to thrash intensely on leash and leash bite when removed from kennel, making it difficult to walk him safely. Ice has also displayed a level of fearfulness inside of the care center, also thrashing in attempts to handle or interact with him. Medically, Ice is emaciated currently.

Let's get to know each other a bit more...

This pet needs emergency placement. Please click here to go to our emergency placement page for more information. Due to the detailed behavior issues, this animal is only available for foster/adoption through one of ACC's New Hope Partners. If you are interested in adopting or fostering, please fill out the pre-screener form. This animal is not directly available for adoption through ACC and is only available by completing the pre-screener form.Adoption inquiries sent directly to ACC will not receive a response. Pre-Screener Form Ice is on the at-risk list due to behavior concerns. Ice in care has began to thrash intensely on leash and leash bite when removed from kennel, making it difficult to walk him safely. Ice has also displayed a level of fearfulness inside of the care center, also thrashing in attempts to handle or interact with him. Medically, Ice is emaciated currently. Ice arrived at the care center as a stray, leaving his history unknown. He has struggled to adjust to the kennel environment and has allowed only minimal handling since intake. We recommend placement with a New Hope partner who can provide necessary behavior support using force-free, positive reinforcement-based methods. A stable home environment would allow for a re-evaluation of his behavior and set Ice up for success before transitioning into a permanent home.

Means of surrender (length of time in previous home):: Stray (Unknown History)

Date of assessment:: 1/13/2025

Summary:: 1/28/25: Leash Walking Strength and pulling: inconclusive - brought to office to reduce stress of being outside Reactivity to humans: inconclusive - did not pass Reactivity to dogs: inconclusive - did not pass Leash walking comments: Sociability Loose in room (15-20 seconds): loose, explores, checks in Call over: approaches with coaxing Sociability comments: Handling Soft handling: tense but leans in, lip lick, flattens ears Exuberant handling: tense but leans in, lip lick, flattens ears, stress yawn Handling comments: Arousal Jog: follows, distracted Arousal comments: Knock: no response Knock Comments: Toy: no response Toy comments: 1/13/25: During an attempt to conduct a handling assessment, Ice would become tense and whale eye while being dressed with a collar. He is given some time to walk away to manage his discomfort. Ice grows anxious, pacing with a tight closed mouth When the assessor attempts to coax Ice to approach and pick up the end of his drag leash, Ice begins jumping up and thrashing. The handler drops the lead and he races over to the door, seeking an exit. Out of concern for his stress levels, a handling assessment was not conducted at this time.

Summary (1):: Due to Ice entering the facility as a stray, there is no prior dog-to-dog history recorded 01/25/25: When off leash at the Care Center Ice is introduced to a greeter female dog. At the gate Ice approaches with a stiff frame. Once the greeter female approaches Ice immediately begins barking with ears back. Ice toggles between growling and barking as he fixates on the greeter female. The handler guides Ice away from the gate but Ice continues to bark at the greeter female until Ice has exited the pen. Due to Ice's reactivity the interaction was ended and a face to face greet was not conducted.

Summary (7):: 1/28/25: Ice's behavior in care remains the same. He readily approached to have his leash clipped to collar, and was returned to kennel with ease following his assessment. 01/27/25: Ice is standing at the front of kennel with a neutral frame as handler approaches. He is avoidant of leashing and will dodge the lead. Handler kneels down and Ice approaches and allows his collar to be clipped. Ice becomes loose and wiggly on the walk to the Canine Behavior Office. He is switched to a drag lead and free to explore the space. Ice is loose and social with multiple handlers throughout his time in the room. He will place his front paws into their laps and lean into petting with a soft frame. Handler tosses him a squeaky toy and he sniff it before returning to handler to solicit more petting. After his session, Ice is leashed with ease and returns to kennel safely. 1/26 (PM): Ice thrashed and flailed during his evening walk. 01/26/25: Ice is standing at the front of his kennel and will greet ACS handler with a neutral frame and will step to the side avoiding the leash before handler is able to place the lead over his head. Once Ice is leash handler will open kennel door and allow him to exit. Ice will run over to the kennel across from him closer to the exit and will begin jumping up on handler and thrashing and pawing at the leash. Ice will be brought outside and walked on a short leash as he walks on the side of handler. When Ice tries to pull and handler puts him on a shorter leash he will become frustrated and will begin jumping on handler and thrashing once again. Ice will be escorted back into the care center and returned to his kennel safely with no further issues. 1/25/25: Ice is approached in kennel and is standing and his kennel door. Ice is vocalizing at the handler, is easily leashed and when removed immediately spins and thrashes a bit and once in the hallway, shakes off and walks on leash. Ice is taken to the play yard where he is a bit hypervigilant but does not pull, and maintains a neutral body. Ice goes to the yard to greet another dog (See Dog-Dog Summary) and is brought back to kennel where she is clipped without issue, and returns to kennel. 1/23/25: Ice is observed leash biting and begins to headwhip when taken out on a walk. 1/18/25: Ice is observed to leash bite and army crawl when taken out of his kennel, treats are used and he begins to stand and follow the handler. 01/13/25 (assessment): Ice is standing at the front of kennel with a neutral frame as handler approaches. He is leashed with ease and pulls mildly to the Canine Behavior Office. Ice displays anxiousness throughout his time in the room, pacing, displaying whale eye and avoiding contact from handlers. Handlers slowly collar him, and he is free to explore the space. Due to discomfort during handling (rigid frame, whale eye, lip licking, panting) an assessment cannot be completed at this time. Ice is slowly leashed and returns to kennel safely.

Date of initial:: 1/10/2025

Summary:: Very nervous, struggles with handling

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only

Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Place with a New Hope partner

Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to Ice's high levels of fearfulness and avoidance, we recommend for him to be placed in an adult-only home. Place with a New Hope Partner: Ice has not acclimated well to the kennel environment and has allowed only minimal handling since intake. We recommend placement with a New Hope partner who can provide any necessary behavior modification (force-free, positive reinforcement-based) and re-evaluate behavior in a stable home environment before placement into a permanent home.

Potential challenges: : Handling/touch sensitivity,Fearful,Anxiety,Leash-biting

Potential challenges comments:: Handling/touch sensitivity | Fearful: When attempting to interact and start Ice's handling assessment he was tense, uncomfortable, and escalated to thrashing when the assessor initiated the interaction. It is important to always go slow and give him the option to walk away from any social interaction. Ice should never be forced to approach anything that she/he is uncomfortable with or to submit to petting or handling. Please see handout on Decompression Period and Handling/touch sensitivity. Anxiety: Ice became anxious when attempting to conduct a handling assessment. He would pace the room and seek exit when handlers attempted to interact with him. We have no history on him in a home environment, so it is unknown if this behavior will arise in a new home environment. Please see handout on Genralized Anxiety. Leash biting: Ice is reported to leash bite while on walks.
