Tyla
Hello, my name is Tyla. My animal id is #267744. I am a desexed female tan dog at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 8 years 2 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 10/19/2026, with the surrender reason stated as person circumstance - moving - no pets allowed.
Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.
Pre-Screener FormTyla is on the at-risk list due to behavior concerns. In the care center, Tyla has shown intense fearful and defensive behavior, including curling tightly at the back of her kennel, growling, hiding, avoiding eye contact, and pressing herself against the kennel wall. She has also refused treats and toys and will plant or attempt to scurry away when leashed. Tyla continues to struggle to acclimate to the shelter environment despite efforts to move slowly and encourage voluntary interactions. Medically, Tyla has Dental disease, stifle laxity, a coxofemoral luxation and an ear infection.
Let's get to know each other a bit more...

Medically, Tyla has Dental disease, stifle laxity, a coxofemoral luxation and an ear infection. Tyla was surrendered to the care centers by her previous owners as they were moving and could not take her with them. They describe Tyla as an affectionate, playful, mellow, and caring dog who knows several commands and loves to spend time where her people are and play with chew toys. Tyla has not acclimated well to the care center environment, and has been intensely fearful and shut down. She has been reluctant to leave her kennel, pressing herself to her bed when handlers have attempted to leash and move her. Her previous owners also report she is very fearful with certain types of handling, thrashing, growling, and attempting to bite when trying to trim her nails. Due to her high levels of fear, we recommend placement with a New Hope partner who can provide any necessary behavior modification (force-free, positive reinforcement-based), allow for decompression, and re-evaluate behavior in a stable home environment before placement into a permanent home.

Summary (7):: 10/25/26: Staff request assistance with Tyla due to her reluctance to move through transfer door and her kennel being highly soiled. Tyla is sitting in the middle of kennel with a tucked frame and whale eye when handlers approach. Treats are offered but Tyla shows no interest. She remains in place in the middle of the kennel and handler is able to easily leash her. Tyla plants and does not come forward. Handler uses moderate leash pressure to guide her out of kennel and once over the threshold, Tyla begins to walk on her own. She walks to the Canine Behavior Office with a tucked tail and trembling frame. Once in the office, she will briefly explore the space and accepts petting with a soft frame. Handler is able to slowly collar her. After her session, Tyla returns to kennel safely. 10/22/26: Tyla is at the back of her kennel curled tight into a ball, growling and when the handler unlocks the kennel door begins to growl louder, hide and not look at the handler. The handler will toss treats, squeak a toy and even leave the door more ajar and she is not interested and does not get off her bed. Tyla is leashed by dropping her over her head and tolerates it without escalating, but plants on the bed and begins to try and scurry away further pressing her head into the wall. She is left alone due to her intense FAS.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only
Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Place with a New Hope partner
Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to Tyla's intensely fearful behavior, we recommend an adult only home. Place with a New Hope partner: Tyla has not acclimated well to the kennel environment and has allowed only minimal handling since intake. We recommend placement with a New Hope partner who can provide any necessary behavior modification (force-free, positive reinforcement-based) and re-evaluate behavior in a stable home environment before placement into a permanent home.
Potential challenges: : Handling/touch sensitivity,Fearful/potential for defensive aggression
Potential challenges comments:: Fearful/potential for defensive aggression | Handling/touch sensitivity: Tyla has been intensely fearful and shut down during her time at the care center, staying at the back of her kennel with a tucked, tense body, growling at handlers when they approach her door, and turning away and pressing herself into her bed when attempting to encourage her to leave the kennel. While in the care center she has been avoidant of handlers, her previous owners report that she has the potential for defensive escalation when fearful, stating that she will bark and growl when restrained and thrash, alligator roll, urinate and defecate on herself, and attempt to bite when attempting to trim her nails. It is important to move slowly with Tyla, to build positive associations (treats/toys/praise) with handling, and to allow her to initiate interactions with new people. She should never be forced to approach or to interact if she is not comfortable and soliciting attention. Please see handouts on Handling/touch sensitivity and Fearful and Defensive Aggression.
