Full Moon is at-risk due to behavior concerns. Full Moon arrived at MACC as an owner surrender. His previous owner describes him as a high energy dog who is reactive towards strangers, children and dogs. In one instance, Full Moon jumped up on a member of the public's child and bit them on the arm. It is unknown if the bite broke skin or not. In the care centers he has been reported to hard bark, growl, and lunge towards people while on leash. Recently, he has also been observed to display signs of deterioration, including a low threshold for arousal escalating to mouthing hands and arms, leash biting, licking crate bars, and pulling his linens into his crate. Full Moon has remained social with handlers during his stay in the care centers. Medically, he is apparently healthy.

What my friends at ACC say about me: My history is a mystery and my friends here do not know much about me yet! I love getting pets and - you guessed it - snuggles! I'm ready to learn! I need a patient person who has the time to work on training with me. I will need daily physical activity to keep me healthy and happy! My Borough Breaker wrote: I had the chance to take Full Moon on a borough break for a fewhours. Right off the bat, Full Moon was very excited to see me. He gave me lots of love right away, and off we were on our walk in Central Park. In busy streets, Full Moon was very aware of his surroundings but quickly relaxed as we reached the park. He was very good on a leash and constantly walked by my side without pulling. He walked head up, either looking at the environment or looking at me. He appeared very social towards other dogs and would probably enjoy playing with other dogs.He did not seem to be treat-motivated. He did not like most ofthe treats I tried to give him but liked a little bit the dried chicken ones. Full Moon is also very intelligent - he just needs find his human pair to help him show off his full potential!

ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on Full Moon so we cannot be certain of their behavior in a home environment. However, they will need daily mental and physical activity to stay engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct their energy and enthusiasm.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only
Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Place with a New Hope partner
Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to on leash reactivity we recommend a home with no children. We recommend placement with a New Hope rescue partner who is able to provide an experienced, adult-only foster home. Force-free, reward based training and/or consultation with a professional trainer/behaviorist is highly recommended.
Potential challenges: : Resource guarding,Basic manners/poor impulse control,Handling/touch sensitivity,Fearful/potential for defensive aggression,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration,Low threshold for arousal,Bite history (human)
Potential challenges comments:: Resource Guarding: Full Moon will have a tense body and will hover over food, toys, and treats. Nothing should ever be taken directly out of Fill Moon's mouth, and any time something is removed they should be rewarded with a high value treat or toy. Please see handout on Resource Guarding. Basic Manners: Full Moon has been observed to frequently jump up on the handler. Handling Sensitivity: Full Moon's previous owner states that he will lunge when his collar is grabbed or touched. Positive reinforcement, reward based training should be used to pair touch with good things such as food rewards in order to teach Moon to be more comfortable with this. Please see handout on Handling and Touch Sensitivity. Fearful Defensive: Moon's previous owner states that he was growling towards the resident children in the home. It is also reported that he is fearful of loud noises. It is important to move slowly with Moon, to build positive associations (treats/toys/praise), and to allow them to initiate interactions with new people. They should never be forced to greet or to interact if they are not comfortable and soliciting attention. Please see handout on Fearful and Defensive Aggression. Bite History (Human): Please see bite history above for more details. Please see handout on Bite History and Potential for Future Aggression. It is recommended that default behaviors such as "Sit" and "Off" are reinforced to substitute any frustration and teach them to control their impulses instead of simply reacting; proper management is also advised. Force-free, reward-based training only is recommended. Please see handout on Basic Manners. On Leash Reactivity: Full Moon's previous owner states that he will lunge towards strangers and children. During his previous stay in the care center during intake when Full Moon entered the kennel room he began hard barking towards the other dogs with a tense body. Moon will need positive reinforcement, reward based training to teach them to look at you rather than other dogs. We recommend a front clip harness to help manage this behavior. Please see handout on On Leash Reactivity and Barrier Frustration. Low Threshold for Arousal: Full Moon has been observed to quickly become over aroused in the presence of people. Moon should be rewarded with treats when calm. If they escalate to jumping or mouthing, people should immediately walk away from and separate themselves from Moon. Please see handout on Arousal.
