According to his previous owner, Five loves to run and would make a great match for an active adopter who enjoys spending time outdoors. At home, Five can usually be found relaxing in the living room, enjoying time with his people. He tolerates bathing and brushing well, making grooming a breeze. Five already knows several basic commands, including sit, stay, and lay down. Five is accustomed to a daily walk of about an hour and a half and enjoys getting plenty of exercise. On leash, he can pull moderately to strongly, so he may benefit from continued training and guidance during walks. He has experience spending time in a crate, though he may whine at first. Car rides can make him a bit nervous, so patience and positive reinforcement will help him build confidence. In shelter, Five has shown some fearful and reactive behavior. Due to this, we recommend an adult only home with an experienced adopter.

ENERGY LEVEL:: Five is described as active and enthusiastic. They will need daily mental and physical activity to keep them engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in addition to physical exercise, to positively direct their energy and enthusiasm. We recommend feeding with puzzle feeders and food-dispensing toys. And we recommend using force-free, reward-based training techniques for Five.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only
Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Recommend no dog parks,Place with a New Hope partner
Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to the redirection risk we recommend an adult only home. No Dog Parks: Due to on leash reactivity with the potential for redirection, we recommend no trips to the dog park. We recommend placement with a New Hope rescue partner who is able to provide an experienced, adult-only foster home. Force-free, reward based training and/or consultation with a professional trainer/behaviorist is highly recommended.
Potential challenges: : Destructive behavior,Basic manners/poor impulse control,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration,Strength/leash pulling,Bite history (other animal)
Potential challenges comments:: Destructive Behavior: Five's previous owner states that he has destructive tendancies in the home. We are unaware of what, if any, attempts were made to remedy this behavior but we suggest to future adopters that Five will need to be provided with physical and mental stimulation and with a variety of appropriate and engaging chew toys so they can engage in necessary chewing behavior without damage to human objects. Please see handout on Destructive Behavior. Basic Manners: Five's previous owner states that he will jump up often or non stop. It is recommended that default behaviors such as "Sit" and "Off" are reinforced to substitute any frustration and teach them to control their impulses instead of simply reacting; proper management is also advised. Force-free, reward-based training only is recommended. Please see handout on Basic Manners. Bite History (other animal): Please see bite history above for more details. Please see handout on Bite History and Potential for Future Aggression. On Leash Reactivity: Five's previous owner states that he will jump, snap, or bite at small animals while on leash. While in care, Five has been observed to be highly kennel reactive. When handlers pull him away from the other dogs, he will jump on them with an open mouth and snap at the handler. Five will need positive reinforcement, reward based training to teach them to look at you rather than other dogs. We recommend a front clip harness to help manage this behavior. Please see handout on On Leash Reactivity and Barrier Frustration. Leash Pulling: Five's previous owner states that he will pull hard while on leash. It is recommended that they be walked on a front clip harness or head halter, which will help diminish their strength through leverage, and that they be trained using positive reinforcement, reward based training to not pull on leash. Please see handout on Leash Manners.
