Spooky
Hello, my name is Spooky. My animal id is #183716. I am a desexed male black cat at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 3 years 2 months old.
I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 10/7/2023, with the surrender reason stated as person circumstance- no time for animal.
Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.
Pre-Screener FormSpooky is on the emergency placement list due to behavior. He is not thriving in the care center and continues to display distance-increasing behavior when approached for interactions. He has not warmed up despite staff using treats to build a positive association. Due to his stress levels, it is in his best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. He would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give him plenty of time and space to adjust, and who have experience with helping a fearful cat adjust to strangers.
Let's get to know each other a bit more...

What my friends at ACC say about me: I'm an independent kitty who likes to do my own thing. I am looking for a home with a patient person. I can be slow to adjust to new environments. I prefer to take things at my own pace. I will flourish in a calm environment and a low-traffic home. I would appreciate slow introductions to new people and places to help me feel safe. I would do best in a home with only adult humans.

ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 10.17.23 Upon approach Spooky was in his den growling, hissing & spitting. As staff cleaned around his closed den, he repeatedly struck the portal door so hard that the den moved to the other side of the kennel. He was hyper-salivating, and about 6 inches of drool was hanging from his mouth. He was hyper-focused on staff with dilated pupils and was lip-licking. Staff waited, saw him break focus and blink, marked with praise then removed themselves. 10/20/23 Upon approach he was resting inside the den. When attempting to pet he immediately sat up watching from afar. Avoids contact hissing and striking at the scratcher tool through the side portal door. Quickly ended the interaction to reduce stress. 10/23/23 Spooky looked at me from inside the den and gave a slow blink so I tried offering treats with the scratcher tool and this produced a low growl so I stopped and waited and in a pause between growls I marked. 2nd visit raised the cover and he growled and hissed so I dropped it and waited speaking gently and when he stopped hissing I marked. 3d visit no reaction from inside the den. 10.24.23 Spooky was low growling looking at staff upon approacn. He lip-licked and continued to growl. Once he gave a slow blink, staff marked with praise and removed themselves. 10/25/23 Low growls after lifting the shor-line cover. Looks from afar through the den plexi door and soft blinks in return. Remains wary with his surroundings while he continues to growl. 10/28/23 Spooky was in the den with fairly average eyes. When spoken to he tensed his body. I continued to offer sweet talk until he stopped growling. Second visit he was resting eyes close but woke up and looked at me with narrow pupils this time and did slow blinks that might have just been “sleepy” blinks because he quickly closed his eyes, put his head down and resumed his nap! Improving? 10.29.23 Spooky was in his den with wide eyes, growling and was lip-licking. When he returned a slow-blink, staff marked with praise and removed themselves. 10/30/23 Spooky was not improved today so no progress video was taken and he was in the den facing out and began low growling when spoken to and lip licked. Second attempt he began low growling then gave a slow blink, resumed growling and I waited him out. 11.1.23 Was eating upon approach, ran back into den hissing then growled. His eyes very slowly constricted back to normal size and his growling eventually stopped. Staff waited until he returned a slow-blink, marked with praise and removed themselves. 11/3/23 Seems under the weather. Alert inside the den. Intense stare. When attempting to pet with the scratcher tool through the side portal door he strikes avoiding contact. Left alone to reduce stress. ---GAN---
ACTIVITY LEVEL:: Subdued
VOCAL:: Quiet
CHARACTER TYPE: : Bold,Independent,Timid
POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:: Inappropriate elimination,Adult cat socialization,New home adjustment period
Potential challenges comments:: It was reported that he mostly uses the litterbox but will have accidents; he will urinate outside of the litterbox a few times per week for an estimated 2 years.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : New Hope Only
RECOMMENDATIONS:: Adult only home
BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: Upon approach Spooky was in his den growling. The assessor introduced the extended scratch tool and he repeatedly hissed, growled, spat and struck the tool. The interaction was ended to reduce FAS. Spooky is displaying behaviors that preclude placement in the adoptions room and/or may require further investigation before placement in a home. He has tried to swat/scratch/spit/is extremely fearful in the shelter environment and does not currently tolerate petting or handling. The behavior department feels that placement with a New Hope Partner is the best option at this time.
