Animal Profile

Druski

Hello, my name is Druski. My animal id is #220270. I am a desexed female black cat at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 2 years 1 months 1 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a stray on 2/9/2025.

Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.

Pre-Screener Form

Druski is on the At Risk list due to behavior and inconsistent appetite due to FAS. She is not thriving in the care center and continues to display distance-increasing behavior when approached for interactions. She has not warmed up despite staff using treats to build a positive association. Due to her stress levels, it is in her best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. She would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give him plenty of time and space to adjust, and who have experience with helping a fearful cat adjust to strangers.

Let's get to know each other a bit more...

A volunteer writes: It's possible that, at two years old, Druski is just now learning about people, but, even so, has admirably defined preferences. We bring her food, snacks, and toys, put on bubble shows and play soft music, but we also do things like occasionally try to pet her. The latter of which she says absolutely not, no thank you. Druski was brought to us with many other cats, but we don't know too much else about her history. While at first Druski would permit us to pet her a little, she did so reluctantly and in conversation. For Druski's part this meant puffing her tail and looking to hide, communicating that she wasn't a fan. Unfortunately shelter life has not been easy on this gentle hearted kitty who has continued to talk with us and share a number of ideas, suggestions, and, of course, complaints. While time can ease adjustments for some, it seems to have brought Druski further into her shell. We're all still hopeful, however, that someone can find space in their home and heart for a kitty who needs a little extra patience and a whole lot of extra love.

Details on my behavior are...

Behavior Condition: 2. Blue

During intakes minimum handling was done.

KNOWN HISTORY:: Druski was brought in from a hoarding situation with limited information on her behavior history in a home environment. During intakes minimum handling was done.

ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 3/4/25 FB61 Crouched on perch, ears tilted, pupils dilated and body and face very tensed. She hisses and lunges when spoken to. I leave some treats in the main space of her kennel and spend the session blowing bubbles for visual enrichment. She watches the bubbles with a tense expression as her ears remain flat. She does not eat the treats offered. Needs more time to adjust. 3/6/25 FB79 Today, Druski was on top of her den with her paws tucked away wide eyes and her ears forward; although she did not hiss when i approached and spoke to her she did hiss when i slowly brought the tool closer to pet. She did however tolerate brief petting before she hissed once again. 3/10/25 FB79 Inside of her den, Druski peaks her head out and has very alert wide/dilated eyes with forward ears. She very quickly lunges towards the front of the glass before i attempt to open the kennel door and proceeds to hiss, spit and lunge as she jumps to the top of the den with a tense, arched hunched body. When i toss in some treats through the cubby door she low growls/grumbles, lunges and spits continuously until i take a few steps back from her kennel. 3/13/25 FB79 Today, Druski displayed the same behaviors described in the previous enrichment note. 3/17/25 FB79 On top of her den, Druski has a neutral face/body when i approach; today she didn't hiss when i opened the kennel door and slow blinked when i spoke to her. She has become more tolerant and curious. She leans in to sniff the tool that i slowly bring closer and lightly swats it with no claw as she inspects it closely; she leans also in to bring the tool to her mouth but does not bite down on it. When i bring it back in when some treats she lightly swats it once again but leans in to sniff and eat it! She didn't allow any petting when i tried to bring the tool to her head as she jumped to the top part of her kennel with now dilated eyes and a tightly wrapped tail. 3/19/25 FB58 Sitting on top of her den with a tense face and body - lunges and then backs away, slow blinks and hunches as she remains tense. She will lunge every once in a while but then settles and slow blinks again. Seems to enjoy being spoken to, still uncomfortable with cage door being opened. 3/21/25 FB61 Lying on top of cat den, ears flat, feet and tail tucked beneath body and pupils very dilated. She hisses and lunges several times when spoken to and then settles back down, ears flattening further. She does not show interest in the treats or the toy offered - she remains too focused on me. I slow-blink and speak to her softly before ending the session.

ACTIVITY LEVEL:: Subdued

VOCAL:: Quiet

CHARACTER TYPE: : Bold,Shy ,Timid,Skittish,Independent

POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:: Fearful,New home adjustment period,Adult cat socialization

Potential challenges comments:: Druski came in with 11 other cats, it is likely that she was not appropriately socialized to humans.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : New Hope Only

RECOMMENDATIONS:: Adult only home

Recommendations comments:: Due to the behavior seen in shelter and needing a longer time to warm up, the behavior team feels Druski would do best in an adult-only home where they would be able to acclimate in a calm environment.

BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: 2/12/25 On approach, Druski is in her den and completely hidden from view - she cannot be coaxed out with treats or when spoken to softly. When the assessor attempts to lift the den cover, she runs partly out of the den and pauses for a moment before she moves further out and sits with a tense face and body, eyes wide and dilated and her front feet propped on top of the den, ready to run. She is tense and frozen but tolerant of a few brief and light pets along her her back with the scratcher tool, tail puffed. Pick up is not attempted due to her high level of FAS and risk of fleeing. 2/27/25 Upon re-eval, Druski is sitting on her shelf with a tense face and body, eyes wide and dilated and ears tilted. As the the assessor approached, she quickly moves towards the front of the cage and lunges as she spits. She continues to lunge and spit as she remains on the shelf. The assessor opens the food slot and introduces the scratcher tool to attempt to interact with her. When the tool gets close to her, she turns and nips at the tool, swatting and then biting and holding onto the tool. Druski is an adult cat that may not have had many interactions with humans from an early age. She is displaying behaviors that preclude placement in the adoptions room and may require further investigation before placement in a home. She has tried to swat, bite, is extremely fearful in the shelter environment, and does not currently tolerate petting or handling. The behavior department feels that placement with a New Hope Partner is the best option at this time.
