Animal Profile

Bubba

Hello, my name is Bubba. My animal id is #208674. I am a desexed male red dog at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 2 years 2 months old.

I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 9/19/2024, with the surrender reason stated as person circumstance- no time for animal.

Bubba is at risk due to his deterioration in care. Although Bubba has been highly social and engaging outside of his kennel, he is becoming increasingly mouthy, jumping up and mouthing at hands persistently on walks. On one occasion, Bubba began lunging at unfamiliar staff which caused him to trip and fall; he then redirected and nipped at the handler. Bubba does enjoy a variety of toys, enrichment items games, and treats. Medically, Bubba is overweight.

He is a big with big pouty mouth and a lot of junk in the trunk. He is a snack aficionado, a couch king, and handsome silly man. He came to us when his owner couldn't care for him anymore. He had lived with 3 adults who he was friendly and playful with. He preferred to keep his space to from dogs on the street. He likes to go for long walks, visit the groomers. Bubba met a female dog at the shelter who he greeted with a soft wiggly body and bounces! He offers play bows, and then creates more space when the other dog becomes over exuberant. What my friends at ACC say about me: My history is a mystery and my friends here do not know much about me yet! It is unknown if I have ever lived with other animals or children. I will flourish in a calm environment and a low-traffic home. I would appreciate slow introductions to new people and places to help me feel safe. I have potential behavior challenges that staff will address with you when you meet me.

Summary:: According to Bubba's previous owner, when on walks he is shy, preferring contact on his terms. 09/24/24 Bubba is introduced to a novel female greeter dog while off leash at the care center. Bubba greets the greeter dog with a soft, wiggly body, offering some bounces. Bubba is taken to greet the greeter dog face-to-face. Bubba remains soft and wiggly, offering bounces as well as play bows. Bubba is vocal when playing, seeming to be nervous when the greeter dog goes to sniff his genitals. Bubba will protect and hide his genitals, spinning and running away. Bubba will begin to increase his distance and will run away more, maintaining his distance, opposed to playing. Bubba is returned to kennel.

Summary (5):: 11/15/24 (Trainer Note): Bubba is standing at the front of his kennel with a loose body as the handler approaches. He is easily leashed and pulls moderately to the canine live room where he allows the handler to clip a drag leash. Bubba engages readily with the various enrichment items and responds to the "sit" cue. Handler reinforces Bubba for taking a deep breath and he is able to do so a few times, before jumping up onto the handler. Bubba is easily redirected. He allows the handler to re-leash him and is returned to kennel without issue. 11/14: Bubba is heard making loud flapping noises in his kennel as a handler walks towards the exit of the room. When the handler nears his kennel, Bubba is found playing with a toy in his kennel. He is tossing it up and down, holding and shaking it as the stuffing falls out. He stops when he finally notices the handler while he is standing on his Kuranda bed. Bubba drops the toy and lunges from his kuranda bed, hitting the kennel door hard barking and growling at the handler. He stays standing on the kennel door vocalizing as the handler walks away. 11/13/24: Bubba greets the handler standing in front of his kennel door with a wagging tail and loose frame. The handler tosses in a toy for Bubba. Bubba catches the toy and is easily leashed. When walking outside Bubba will carry the toy shaking it but frequently drops it. Bubbas will sometimes toss it and pounce on it. The handler will pick it up when he isn't interested and toss it. Bubba will see other dogs on the walks, stare at them and fixate briefly but will eventually look away. The handler rewards Bubba disengaging by tossing the toy which he catches. On the way back into the care center Bubba drops the toy. The handler fails to pick it up. Upon attempting to clip his lead Bubba turns his head, looks at the handler and jump on the handler standing on them. Bubba attempts to jump with a closed mouth and loose frame. Bubba jumps off and becomes mouthy with the handlers hands. placing his mouth of the handlers hands with a soft mouth but never pressing down or applying pressure. Bubba disengages and the handler successfully clips the leash escorting back to his kennel where he is unleashed and secured without any issues.

Summary (6):: 11/12/24 Bubba was reported to lunge at maintenance workers as they worked outside and during the process, fell, turned around and redirected, nipping the staff member handling him. Bubba was returned, the staff member was fine. 11/06/24 (Trainer): Bubba's behavior remains the same as the note from 10/29. 10/29/24: Bubba is standing neutrally in kennel as the handler approaches. He is easily leashed and pulls mildly to the canine training room. Bubba engages readily in the LATTE enrichment items and is returned to kennel without issue. 10/23/24: Bubba was leashed with ease and relieved himself once outside the building. Bubba walked to the yard where he was clipped to a drag leash. Bubba was loose bodied and social with handler. He engaged in fetch and would drop one toy in exchange for the other before sitting on cue. Bubba frolicked across the yard to retrieve his toys and appeared at ease. Bubba would hold a sit at handler's feet and attempt to catch treats in his mouth. Bubba was returned to kennel with ease. 10/16/24 Bubba is standing on all fours with a neutral frame as the handler approaches. Bubba is leashed with ease and taken to the play pens. Exiting the kennel room and building, Bubba will anxiously pull his way out. When arriving to the play pens, Bubba is heavily panting, jumping in the direction of the handler in the process. Bubba will sit easily when cued, catching treats as they are tossed. Bubba will also take treats gently when administered. Bubba will pace and jump throughout his time in the yard. When seeing other dogs, Bubba will pull in their direction maintaining a soft body and wagging tail. Bubba is returned to the facility where he enters the building and his kennel with no issue.

Summary (7):: 10/10/24: Bubba is standing at the front of the kennel panting as the handler approaches. He is easily leashed and pulls moderately to the canine training room. Bubba engages readily in the LATTE enrichment items so handler places him on a drag leash. Bubba begins to jump on the handler and mouth at them as the handler attempts to clip the drag. He then runs around the room jumping up onto handlers. Handler redirects Bubba onto the LATTE enrichment items and he releases some tension from his body, decreasing the intensity of his panting. He is easily leashed and returned to kennel without issue. 10/4/24: Bubba is at the front of the kennel pawing at the front of the door and play sneezing when the handler approaches. Bubba is easily leashed and immeidately begins to jump on the handler in a social manner, the handler waits until he is in the behavior office to pet Bubba, to which he leans in to the handlers legs and mouths out of excitement with moderate pressure. Bubba is then taken on a walk to help alleviate his arousal levels. Bubba pulls hard on and off and will chase the birds on the sidewalks, stalking them until he's close then begins to lunge. Bubba otherwise enjoys the walk, explores the sidewalk and jumps on the handler on and off, being refocused with a toy that he holds. Bubba is taken back to his kennel with no issue. 09/24/24: Bubba is standing at the front of kennel with a loose body as handler approaches. He jumps up onto the kennel door as he is being leashed and pulls mildly out to the play yard. Bubba is brought to the yard for playgroup (see Dog-Dog Summary for further details). He is social with handlers throughout and returns to kennel safely. 9/22/24: Bubba was leashed with ease and walked to the BA room for his assessment. Bubba tolerated being collared despite displaying some neck sensitivity. Bubba was highly social with multiple handlers, approaching with a loose, wiggly body. He was returned to kennel with ease. 09/21/24 (late entry): Bubba is standing at the front of kennel with a neutral body as handler approaches. He jumps up on the kennel door excitedly as handler cracks the door open and he is leashed with ease. On the walk to the Canine Behavior Office, Bubba shows some anxiety, panting, red eyes, and weaving side to side in front of handler. After collaring, Bubba begins to show some arousal and attempts to jump on assessor multiple times so assessor decides to give him an extra day.

ENERGY LEVEL:: Bubba is described as active and enthusiastic. He will need daily mental and physical activity to keep him engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct his energy and enthusiasm. We recommend feeding with puzzle feeders and food-dispensing toys. And we recommend only force-free, reward-based training techniques for Bubba

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: Level 4

Recommendations:: No children (under 13)

Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to Bubba's reported snapping when being pushed off furniture and exuberance, we recommend he goes to an adult-only home.

Potential challenges: : Resource guarding,Basic manners/poor impulse control,Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition,Handling/touch sensitivity,Fearful/potential for defensive aggression,Anxiety

Potential challenges comments:: Resource guarding: Bubba is reported to snap when pushed off the couch, Bubba may deem the couch as personal/valuable space to be in. To help him feel more secure, create a comfy area just for him and use positive reinforcement to reward him for staying there. Teaching an "off" command can also help him learn to move when asked. Basic manners/poor impulse control/Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition: Bubba is reported to jump on people in a social manner, and was a bit mouthy during his assessment. We recommend substituting mouthiness with toys when he begins to use his teeth, and reinforcing impulse control when seeing people. See handout on Mouthiness/Impulse Control Handling/touch sensitivity: Bubba is a bit sensitive around his neck, and begins to become anxious when his neck is handled. We recommend a slow approach with Bubba and paring treats when touch in this area. Fearful/potential for defensive aggression: Bubba is reported to snap if he pushed off furniture. Bubba would do best in an initially calm and quiet home environment and should be given time to acclimate to his new surroundings. See handouts on Decompression Period and Fearful and Defensive Aggression. Anxiety: Bubba is a bit anxious in care. We recommend long walks and puzzle toys to help alleviate his anxiety. See handout on Generalized Anxiety.
