Luna
Hello, my name is Luna. My animal id is #225218. I am a desexed female brown dog at the Staten Island Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 1 years 7 months 3 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 4/23/2025, with the surrender reason stated as person circumstance- homeless.
Luna is at risk for behavior due to deterioration. Luna has begun to deteriorate after about a month in care. During socialization, she has been seen pacing the length of the yard. She has been difficult to interrupt and jumps up at handlers while in this aroused state. It is in her best interest to leave this stressful environment. Medically, she has folliculitis at muzzle. She is otherwise healthy.

Luna is a playful and affectionate dog with a high energy level, requiring an experienced adopter who can manage her strong pulling on the leash, potential resource guarding, and impulsive behavior. She would do best in an adult-only home where her adopter can provide the structure and training she needs to thrive. With consistent, force-free training and daily mental and physical stimulation, Luna has the potential to be a well-adjusted and loving companion.

Summary (1):: Luna is a very active and playful female dog who enjoys spending most of her time in the living room. She is enthusiastic about car rides and loves engaging with toys, especially bones. Luna is accustomed to both wet and dry food, with Pedigree being her preferred brand. She goes on short, frequent walks—about 10 minutes each, 3 to 4 times a day—and tends to pull strongly on the leash. While she has never been crate-trained in the traditional sense, she has spent time in a crate playing with toys. Luna is comfortable with having her nails trimmed by her owner or family members and knows basic cues like "sit" and "stay." Her previous owner especially appreciated her love for food and toys.
Summary (6):: 5/22: Luna is easily leashed, and once she walks out of her crate, she jumps up at the handler, her teeth touching their hand. She recovers and is moved along through the hall. She pulls into the yard with a high tail. The handler clips a drag leash, and she is let loose. She begins to pace the length of the yard, running back and forth. The handler tosses treats, squeaks her squeaker, but Luna remains focused. When across the yard, she runs straight at the handler before she reaches her, the handler gives an "ah-ah", and Luna sits right at her feet. She is rewarded for sitting and called over to the bench. She walks away from pets to repeat the pacing behavior. When she runs towards the staff a second time, the slip lead is secured. She is brought on a short walk before returning to her crate. 05.14 Luna is easily leashed and brought out to the yard, and begins to explore. He hears another handler/dog duo in the adjoining yard and begins to run back and forth the length of the yard. The handler holds the leash and creates distance, attempting to get attention from Luna. We walk back and forth, and it takes a long time until she can focus on the handler. She takes a few treats and begins to focus on the dog/handler in the other yard. 5/12: Luna is easily leashed and pulls hard out to the yard. A drag leash is attached, and she explores on her own, hanging out near the entrance to the yard. The handler calls her over, and she approaches readily, accepting pets before returning to the gate. She returns without issue.
Summary (7):: 5/7/25: Luna is easily leashed and pulls hard in the halls. She is brought to the yard. Once off leash, she explores on her own. She waits at the gate, and the handler calls her over and tosses a treat. She comes forward to eat the treat and then leans in to pets. At the end of the session, she offers bouncy play behavior and returns without issue. 5/5/25: Luna is easily leashed and brought to the yard. A drag leash is attached. She remains near the handler, looking up at her. When she hears another dog/staff pair in the yard, she attempts to jump up on the storage bins to jump up. She is called over and accepts treats. She allows for pets. At the end of the session, she returns without issue. 05.04 Luna is at the kennel door, with a wagging tail and loose body upon arrival. She is easily leashed and brought to the yard, pulling moderately on the way. A drag leash is secured to her, and she runs around, exploring her surroundings. Luna returns to staff and accepts pets, leaning into them. When a dog walks by with another staff member, Luna runs to follow their movements, with a high tail and perked ears. When they are out of sight, she finds a toy and engages in play. Upon return, Luna goes directly into her kennel and eats the treats that were left for her. 04.24.25 Luna is standing at the front of her kennel as staff approaches. She is leashed and ignores neighboring kennels as she runs past them. When in the yard, a drag leash is placed on her, and Luna begins to jump up at the staff. The staff member turns their body away from Luna, as she does so, and then she gets the zoomies. She runs around the yard before running back up to the staff and jumping up at them. Staff asks her to sit, and she does so. When a treat is introduced to reward her, she immediately jumps up to grab it. Staff tosses the treat off to the side. When Luna runs back up to the staff, they throw their leash on her and walk her around the yard. She is then returned to her kennel.

Summary:: tense but allowed all handling
ENERGY LEVEL:: Luna is described as active and enthusiastic. He will need daily mental and physical activity to keep her engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct his energy and enthusiasm. We recommend feeding with puzzle feeders and food-dispensing toys. And we recommend only force-free, reward-based training techniques for Luna.
IN SHELTER OBSERVATIONS::
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: Level 3
Recommendations:: No children (under 13)
Recommendations comments:: NO CHILDREN (UNDER 13) due to the potential for arousal and the potential for resource guarding we recommend Luna go to an adult only home at this time.
Potential challenges: : Resource guarding,Basic manners/poor impulse control,Strength/leash pulling,Low threshold for arousal
Potential challenges comments:: RESOURCE GUARDING During her assessment Luna mouthed at the assessor hand, while we are unsure if this was due to guarding or her thinking the hand as a toy, we feel that any future adopter should be prepared incase Luna does show resource guarding in the future. Nothing should ever be taken directly out of Luna's mouth, and any time something is removed he should be rewarded with a high value treat or toy. He should be taught the "drop" cue and trade-up games. Please see handout for resource guarding. BASIC MANNERS/POOR IMPULSE CONTROL It is recommended that default behaviors such as "Leave it", "Sit/Stay", "Down" are reinforced to substitute any frustration and teach her to control her impulses instead of simply reacting; proper management is also advised. Force-free, reward based training only is recommended. Please see handout on basic manners/ poor impulse control. STRENGTH/LEASH PULLING Luna has been observed to pull hard on the leash during relief walks. Her adopter must be prepared and able to handle a dog of this size and strength. It is recommended that she be walked on a front clip harness or head halter, which help diminish his strength through leverage, and that he be trained using positive reinforcement, reward based training to not pull on leash. Please see handout on leash manners. LOW THRESHOLD FOR AROUSAL During her assessment when a toy was squeaked Luna became over excited and jumped up against staff and mouthing at their hands. Positive reinforcement, force-free training should be used to teach Luna to remain calm when people and other exciting things are around. She should be rewarded with treats when calm. If she escalates to jumping or mouthing, people should immediately walk away from and separate themselves from Luna. Please see handout on arousal.
