Animal Profile

Lucky

Hello, my name is Lucky. My animal id is #253133. I am a male black dog at the Staten Island Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 1 years 10 months 3 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 6/4/2026, with the surrender reason stated as animal behavior - barks too much.

He enjoys car rides, bath time, and entertaining himself with empty bottles and cardboard boxes. Lucky knows basic commands, walks nicely on a leash, and is crate trained. Lucky does have a bite history. While the bites were not severe, he can be uncomfortable with certain handling and will need time to build trust with new people. Because of this, Lucky is looking for an adult-only home with an experienced owner who can provide structure, respect his boundaries, and help him continue to succeed. With patience and understanding, Lucky has the potential to be a rewarding companion.

Summary (1):: Lucky is a very active and playful dog who spent most of his time outdoors, often around a barn or shed. He loves bath time and being in the water, although he is uncomfortable with nail trimming and does not tolerate it well. Lucky walks nicely on a leash with very little pulling, but he did not have a regular walking schedule and typically went on shorter walks. He is crate trained and does very well in a wire crate, where he can comfortably stay for up to 12 hours. Lucky also loves car rides and enjoys going along for adventures. He knows several basic commands, including sit, stay, no, and come. His previous owner’s favorite things about him were how loving and playful he was with their children. Lucky’s favorite activities include playing with empty bottles, chewing on paper, and tearing up boxes for fun.

Summary (6):: 6/16: Lucky is easily leashed and brought on a walk. He takes his time investigating scents, having to be coaxed along. Handler sits on a bench and invites him over he ignores her. She scatters kibble which he comes over to sniff but does not eat. He is clipped and returned without issue. He eats treats left in kennel. 6/10: Lucky is easily leashed and brought on a walk. He takes his time investigating smells, laying down in the grass sometimes. As they are walking up the block, a volunteer is walking towards them for their shift. Lucky walks with them for about a minute or so and then lunges. She gives him space, he recovers and he returns without further issue. 6.8 Lucky is at the front of the kennel. He is easily leashed and taken to the yard. In the yard Lucky is Kept on leash. Lucky has a neutral body when waked in the yard. Staff gets a towel and attempt to wipe poop off of him, and lucky gets tense and head whips towards staff. When returning to the kennel Lucky has a tense body and head whips when staff attempts to clip his leash.

Summary (7):: 6/07 Lucky was easily leashed and taken outside for a walk. Upon exiting the building, Lucky began sniffing the handler's pants and then attempted to mount the handler's leg. The handler stiff armed Lucky to create space and prevent further mounting. As the walk continued down the ramp, Lucky remained fixated on sniffing the handler's leg. This behavior persisted throughout the remainder of the walk despite redirection attempts. Lucky was easily returned to his kennel without further issue. 6/7: Lucky is pacing and pawing at the front of his kennel. He is easily leashed and walks out on his own. He is brought on a walk keeping a loose leash. He allows to be clipped and returned without issue. 6/4: Lucky was on leash in the hallway after his intake. BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only

Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Place with a New Hope partner

Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to bite history we recommend a home with no children. Place with a New Hope partner: We recommend placement with a New Hope partner who can provide any necessary behavior modification (force-free, positive reinforcement-based) and re-evaluate behavior in a stable home environment before placement into a permanent home

Potential challenges: : Basic manners/poor impulse control,Handling/touch sensitivity,Fearful/potential for defensive aggression,Multiple-bite history/risk of future aggression,Anxiety,Bite history (human)

Potential challenges comments:: Basic manners/poor impulse control: Lucky lacks basic manners and impulse control. It is recommended that default behaviors such as "Leave it", "Sit/Stay", "Down" are reinforced to substitute any frustration and teach him to control his impulses instead of simply reacting; proper management is also advised. Force-free, reward-based training only is recommended. Please see the handout on Basic Manners and Impulse Control. Handling/Touch Sensitivity: Lucky did not allow for pick up when coming into the care center. It is important to avoid picking Lucky up at this time and to be cautious when touching him in other areas as we do not know where he may have other sensitivities. Positive reinforcement, reward-based training should be used to pair touch with good things such as food rewards to teach Lucky to be more comfortable with this. Please see the handout on Handling and Touch Sensitivity. Fearful/potential for defensive aggression: Lucky is reported hard bark and growl at strangers. Lucky gives clear warnings when he is uncomfortable and does seem to choose to avoid or retreat when given the opportunity, but if prevented from moving away there is a potential to escalate to higher-level warning behaviors and possible fear-based aggression. It is important to move slowly with Lucky, to build positive associations (treats/toys/praise), and to allow him to initiate interactions with new people. He should never be forced to greet or to interact if she is not comfortable and soliciting attention. Please see handout on Fearful Potential for Defensive Aggression. Multiple-bite history/risk of future aggression/Bite history (human): Lucky has escalated to biting the children in the previous home. The owner mentioned this happened a few times but the bites did not break the skin. Lucky was aloof on intake, when staff attempt to lift him, he quickly bit and released. He does show bite inhibition as it did not cause any damage. However, since this is a learned behavior, it is likely to continue. Please see handout on Bite History and Potential for Future Aggression. Anxiety: Lucky appears anxious at the care center, mounting staff, pacing in kennel. If Lucky displays anxious behavior in his future home, we recommend puzzle toys, long walks, and giving him other things to focus on to alleviate his anxiety. Positive reinforcement, force-free training only should be used. Please see the handout on Generalized Anxiety.
