Ace

Hello, my name is Ace. My animal id is #247493. I am a male brown dog at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 2 years 1 months old.

I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 3/8/2026, with the surrender reason stated as person circumstance- landlord won't allow.

Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.

Pre-Screener Form

Ace is at risk due to behavioral reasons. Despite our best efforts at making him comfortable, Ace has been observed to show signs of stress while in care. Noted to vocalize loudly while in kennel when the room is active and when it's more quiet. Ace's previous owner states that he will hard bark and growl at other dogs. While in care, Ace has been observed to pull hard towards the other dogs in the kennel and on the street. He is also observed to jump up and bite the leash while in kennel. During one instance, he bit the handler on the hand when they were attempting to leash him (no broken skin). Ace's previous owner describes him as very active and playful. When outside of the shelter environment, Ace is social with staff, allows all contact, understands basic commands, and is treat receptive. Medically, Ace has cherry eye.

Ace arrived at MACC as an owner surrender. His previous owner states that he does well with familiar people - having lived with adults and teenagers in his previous home. He likes to lay around the home, and be where his people are. Ace would do best in a quiet environment where he can decompress and get to know his new family on his own terms. What my friends at ACC say about me: I would appreciate slow introductions to new people and places to help me feel safe. I need a home where there are no other dogs. I'm ready to learn! I need a patient person who has the time to work on training with me. I prefer to call the shots and enjoy coming to you when I'm ready for pets. I have medical needs that staff will address with you when you meet me.

Summary (5):: 3/26/26: Ace is observed to high-pitch vocalize in a semi-quiet room. 3/26/26: Ace is at the front of his kennel barking and high-pitched vocalizing as the handler approaches. He is easily leashed and brought out the room, which he pulls out of. On the street, Ace walks ahead with moderate to hard leash pulling. Ace is social with the handler, jumping on them and receiving pets; he also eats his leftover stool, and the handler pulls him away. While walking back, Ace pulls hard. Upon entry, the handler clisp their leash and returns Ace to his kennel. 03/25/26: Ace is at the front of his kennel as handler approaches. He is leashed while distracted with treats and barks/vocalizes intensely as handler he is leashed. He pulls hard out of kennel to the street for his walk. Outside he continues to pull hard and pants heavily. He frequently stops to sniff spots on the street and walks in front of handler. When seeing people he passes without issue but when seeing dogs will stare and pull toward them and is difficult to redirect. Ace will stop to relieve himself frequently while sniffing and remains frantic throughout his walk. After walking for a while he is brought back inside and returned to kennel without issue.

Summary (6):: 3/24/26: Ace is at the front of his kennel with a loose body. he is easily leashed and brought out the kennel; while exiting, the handler drops treats in front of Ace, but he doesn't show interest, as he is slightly turned, looking at the kennels. On the street, Ace walks ahead with moderate leash tension; he doesn't react to dogs or passersby. Ace interacts with the handler, by following the 'sit' command and taking treats. Upon entry, the handler clips their leash and returns Ace to his kennel. 3/23/26: It is reported that Ace is leash biting while in kennel and bit the handler's hand when they were attempting to leash him. While in the yard, Ace is observed to be pacing around the handler and pulling hard in multiple different directions. 3/21/26: As handler approaches Ace's kennel he would look in the handlers direction and quickly become loose and wiggly. He would begin to slightly vocalize and jump onto the kennel doors. Ace is then easily leashed and removed from his kennel, as he is exiting the kennel room he is pulling very hard with a tense body while barking towards the neighboring kennels. Ace is kept on a short and tight leash and is taken straight to the yard. Once out in the yard, Ace would begin to jump onto the handler soliciting pets. He would pull forward with a moderate pull and is then taken to a pen where he is placed on a drag leash. Ace would begin to run around and jump onto the handler, handler would toss a treat which Ace would follow and then relieve himself in multiple spots. Handler would begin to play pattern games with Ace such as 'superbowl' and 'popcorn'. Throughout the duration of both pattern games, he would remain highly receptive with the treats and engaged with the handler. Afterwards, Ace would look towards the handler and sit which each time he was rewarded with a high value treat (sliced cheese). Handler would then bring a kuranda bed into the pen and Ace would begin to jump on top of it and fall into a sit position, which he is rewarded with each time as well. Another handler would come out with a dog in the neighboring pen and Ace would run to the fence with a neutral body, but easily disengages with his name being called and a treat. Shortly after, he is then easily re-leashed and brought back to his kennel presenting the same kennel fighting behaviors from before. Leash is removed and handler would pass Ace enrichment that he would remain engaged with. Moments later, Ace is lying in his kennel with his enrichment and interaction was then ended.

Summary (7):: 3/19/26: Ace is at the front of his kennel with a soft body. The handler feeds him treats, and then leashes him. While walking out the room, Ace looks at the kennel while slightly pulling towards them, but the handler shortens the leash and brings him out the room and into the yard, for playgroup. (See dog-dog notes). After the interaction, the handler brings Ace into another pen. There, as the handler is seated, Ace jumps on their lap with a wiggly body, soliciting pets and attention. After a few minutes, the handler brings Ace back inside. While walking to his kennel, Ace looks at the kennels, but returns to his with ease. 3/18/26: Ace is standing at the front of his kennel barking. He continues to bark as handler unlocks the door. He take treats and is easily leashed. He pulls hard out of the room but is looking over at the other dogs. He is walked on the street where he is aloof and pulls hard from spot to spot as he sniffs. He is not receptive to handlers calling him. He is easily clipped and pulls hard back to kennel while looking at the other dogs. He goes in without issue. 3/16/26: It is reported that Ace will begin vocalizing loudly (screeching) after being returned to kennel. 3/15: Volunteer Note - Ace is a very happy, excitable wiggle machine. When staff began petting him, he immediately rolled over for belly rubs, wagging his tail nonstop. He once jumped up in a friendly, affectionate way to seek hugs and attention. When other volunteers approached, Ace remained social and relaxed, showing a loose, wiggly body and friendly demeanor throughout the interaction. 3/14/26: Ace has reported to become both dog and kennel reactive. Additionally, while he is in the yard, he is very jumpy on the handler, never seeming to settle down. 3/11/26: Ace is standing in the middle of his kennel with a tense low body and hard stare. He takes treats and softens slightly. The door is unlocked and he gives a low wag. He is easily leashed and brought outside, where he walks with a tense crouched body and ears back. He pulls lightly and darts occasionally. He sniffs around and checks in, giving a slight wag when making eye contact. He is brought back to the assessment room (see notes) and returned to kennel. He runs back into his kennel and leaps in as the dogs in other kennels bark.

ENERGY LEVEL:: Ace is described as active and enthusiastic. They will need daily mental and physical activity to keep them engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in addition to physical exercise, to positively direct their energy and enthusiasm. We recommend feeding with puzzle feeders and food-dispensing toys. And we recommend using force-free, reward-based training techniques for Ace.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only

Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Single-pet home,Recommend no dog parks,Place with a New Hope partner

Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to fearful behavior we recommend an adult only home. Single Pet Home/ No Dog Parks: Due to hard barking and growling towards familiar and unfamiliar dogs we recommend a single pet home with no trips to the dog park. We recommend placement with a New Hope rescue partner who is able to provide an experienced, adult-only foster home. Force-free, reward based training and/or consultation with a professional trainer/behaviorist is highly recommended.

Potential challenges: : House soiling,Basic manners/poor impulse control,Fearful/potential for defensive aggression,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration,Leash-biting

Potential challenges comments:: House Soiling: Ace's previous owner states that he will soil the house daily. We recommend positive reinforcement, reward-based training only. Accidents should never be punished as this will likely make the problem worse. Please see handout on House Soiling. Basic Manners: Ace's previous owner states that he will jump up often or non stop. It is recommended that default behaviors such as "Sit" and "Off" are reinforced to substitute any frustration and teach them to control their impulses instead of simply reacting; proper management is also advised. Force-free, reward-based training only is recommended. Please see handout on Basic Manners. Fearful Defensive: Ace's previous owner states that he will growl and hard bark at strangers. While in care Ace has been observed to be tense with handlers and flinch during sudden movements. It is important to move slowly with Ace, to build positive associations (treats/toys/praise), and to allow them to initiate interactions with new people. They should never be forced to greet or to interact if they are not comfortable and soliciting attention. Please see handout on Fearful and Defensive Aggression. On Leash Reactivity: Ace's previous owner states that he will hard bark and growl at familiar and unfamilar dogs. While in care has been observed to stare and pull hard towards other dogs. This behavior is not able to be redirected easily. Ace will need positive reinforcement, reward based training to teach them to look at you rather than other dogs. We recommend a front clip harness to help manage this behavior. Please see handout on On Leash Reactivity and Barrier Frustration. Leash Biting: Ace has been observed to jump up and bite the leash in kennel. During one instance, he bit the handler on the hand while they were attempting to leash him. We recommend walking them with a toy to dissuade them from grabbing the leash. Positive reinforcement, force-free training is advised to teach them to focus on you rather than grabbing the leash. Please see handout on Leash Manners.
