Dior
Hello, my name is Dior. My animal id is #220507. I am a desexed female blue dog at the Staten Island Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 3 years 3 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 2/13/2025, with the surrender reason stated as person circumstance- military duty.
Dior is at risk for behavior reasons. Dior has been leash-biting intensely when being removed from kennel, causing high concern for handlers safety. Once out of kennel and given time to calm down she is social and affectionate. She seeks attention and is soft when accepting treats outside of care center. Medically, Dior has a luxating patella, fractured upper canine tooth, but is otherwise healthy.

Dior is a social and playful dog, but she requires a home where her energy and excitement can be managed with patience and consistent training. She has some challenges with impulse control, mouthiness, and social hyperarousal, which can lead to her becoming easily overexcited and mouthy in interactions. Dior would do best in a home without young children and with an experienced owner who can provide structure, positive reinforcement, and appropriate outlets for her energy. With time and training, Dior has the potential to become a well-behaved and affectionate companion, especially in an environment where she can feel secure and guided.

Summary (6):: 3.11 Dior is at the front of the kennel when approached. She rope bites, biting and holding to the rope, as staff attempts to leash her. Once leashed Dior rope bites until out of the room, where she stops. Dior is then taken on a walk, where she has a soft body and pulls a moderate amount. Dior is then taken to a yard. She wanders the yard and approaches staff, leaning into pets. She goes back and forth between exploring the yard and soliciting attention. When being pet, Dior has a soft body and gently leans into pets. Dior sat for treats but dropped the treat when it was given to her, She continued sniffing at it while it was on the floor but did not eat it. She is easily leashed and returned to her kennel. 03.10 Dior is jumping against the door of her kennel. The leash is brought high and dropped over her head. She grabs the leash in her mouth and holds it there until she is in the hallway, letting go before leaving the building. She is brought out for an adoption interaction. She pulls towards potential adopters and is held back until she begins to accept treats from the handler. She begins to calm down, taking treats gently. She is allowed to greet potential adopter and begins to calm some more. Dior has her back toward potential adopter and she allows them to gently pet her and give her treats. A drop leash is attached, and she has a soft, wiggly body, beginning to mouth gently and then stopping after a gentle petting.
Summary (7):: 03.09 Dior is jumping against the kennel door. The door is opened slight and the leash is slowly dropped from above, landing around Dior's neck. She tugs on the leash while leaving the room and lets go once in the hallway. She is first walked and pulls slightly towards the street, then begins to explore the grass. Her tail is high and loose while being walked back toward the yard. Dior nudges at the handler's treat pouch taking then gently. She leans against handler's leg and accepts gentle petting. 2/27: Handler is able to secure Dior by keeping her leash up high and dropping it over her head. Once leashed, she bites the leash once then releases. She walks close to handler as she passes barking dogs. On the walk she keeps a loose leash and checks in with handler. She accepts calm pets before returning without issue. 2/24: Spray cheese is used to distract Dior while being leashed. She head whips between the leash and barking dogs. In the yard she is mouthy as handler attempts to attach a drag leash. Once leashed it takes her several minutes to calm down and accept gentle pets. She accepts treats offered but spits them out (unsure if she is having trouble eating, has a lolling tongue). She splays as she is returned to kennel. 02.23 Dior is jumping against the door of her kennel. She stands against it while the door is opened slightly. The leash is brought up high and she watches it wide eyes and handler attempts to drop it over her head. She grabs the leash with her mouth and pulls the leash in, letting go after a few seconds. She is leashed and continues to nibble at the leash. She pulls hard leaving the building and is brough to the yard. Handler sits on the bench and Dior come and jumps on handler's lap. She is redirected by the collar and brought back to the ground. SHe is pet down her body with ling gentle strokes and she leans in soft. 2/16: Dior is panting and wide eyed at kennel front. As handler reaches in to secure the slip lead she meets the leash with her mouth. Once secured she walks out and looks into kennels in passing. She is brought to the yard and a drag leash attached. She head whips when pet but remains close to handler who takes frequent breaks from pet to ensure she is comfortable. At the end of the session, she returns without issue. 2/15/25: Dior is standing at her kennel door, barking, as staff arrives. She is easily leashed and brought out to the yard, walking nicely on the way. She is kept on leash and walks around with staff, sniffing and exploring her surroundings. Dior has loose posture as she accepts pets to her head and body, while being spoken to in soft tones. She leads staff to the gate, where she sits. When it is time to return, she goes directly into her kennel without incident, and eats the treats that were left for her.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: Level 4
Recommendations:: No children (under 13)
Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to social hyperarousal, we recommend a home with no children.
Potential challenges: : Basic manners/poor impulse control,Social hyperarousal,Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition,Anxiety,Leash-biting
Potential challenges comments:: Basic manners/poor impulse control: It is recommended that default behaviors such as "Leave it", "Sit/Stay", "Down" are reinforced to substitute any frustration and teach her to control her impulses instead of simply reacting; proper management is also advised. Force-free, reward based training only is recommended. Please see handout on Basic Manner and Impulse Control. Social hyperarousal/Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition: Dior become easily aroused when meeting new people. Positive reinforcement, force-free training should be used to teach Dior to remain calm when people and other exciting things are around. She should be rewarded with treats when calm. If she escalates to jumping or mouthing, people should immediately walk away from and separate themselves from Dior. While she applies only light pressure, Dior was mouthy throughout the assessment and is quick to put her teeth on skin. This is likely an attention-seeking behavior, but it should be replaced with an alternative behavior as it can frighten people. We recommend never playing with bare hands – always with a toy - and ending play or attention whenever Dior puts teeth on skin. She should be rewarded with attention and treats when she stops and/or when she is seeking attention in alternate ways. Please see handout on Arousal and Mouthiness. Anxiety: We have no history on her behavior in a home environment, so we do not know if this will occur outside of the care center. If it does appear in a future home, we recommend puzzle toys, long walks, and giving her other things to focus on to alleviate her anxiety. Positive reinforcement, force-free training only should be used. Please see handout on Generalized Anxiety. Leash-biting: Dior has begun to leash bite when staff attempt to remove her from kennel. We are managing this behavior with treats. We recommend walking her with treats or toys to interrupt this behavior should it become problematic in her new home. Please see handout on Leash Manners.
