Let's get to know each other a bit more...

This pet needs emergency placement. Please click here to go to our emergency placement page for more information. Patch needs at risk placement for medical reasons. He has lost weight in shelter due to stress and an upper respiratory infection. His appetite is low and is at high risk of developing fatty liver disease. Advise supportive care in a quiet environment to recover. Patch was fearful when initially in shelter. With an extended period of adjustment, he came out of his shell and is social, active, outgoing and very affectionate! He interacts with the assessor, solicits attention, is easy to handle and tolerates all petting. This cat is suitable for any level of adopter experience. A volunteer writes: Patch and Spatch, two brothers obviously, were found in the street, all by their lonesome one late summer night. They were brought to the Manhattan Care Center where they were immediately housed together for mutual support. They were so scared, their life dreadfully turned up side down, their mind unable to make sense of anything around them, the fear settling in and nowhere to go...I wonder if a cat could even think:where is home? Both kitties were clearly well cared for, well dressed and groomed and no doubt about it, well fed..Who knows, may be their owner passed away and someone let them go...Patch and Spatch like to keep separate but when they feel threatened, they seek comfort in each other. While Spatch is still very timid and hesitant  to the touch, Patch has opened up tremendously. He is a handsome sweetheart who very much appreciates caresses, gentle words, returns my eye blinks and slowly but surely indicates that he is ready for laptime(see video). Spatch's turn will come very soon too. I dream for these two siblings to find a caring and loving home together with a new owner who will understand the trauma they went through. Both are already neutered and could go home once their cold is cleared!

Behavior Condition: 3. Yellow

KNOWN HISTORY:: Patch was brought in as a stray, there is no known information on his behavior history in a home environment.

ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 09.11.24 FB04 Laying in middle of kennel upon approach trying to look as small as possible. Sniffed treats but too fearful to engage further. Staff pet his cheeks and head and he gently leaned in for a few seconds. Then he got fearful and turned around to face the back corner by his litter box. 09.12.24 FB04 Laying in litter box. Poked head up upon approach and sniffed treats offered. He offered slow-blinks, staff pet his head, cheeks then under-the-chin, which he leaned into. Remained in place throughout interaction. Licked lips intermittently. 9/15/24 Vol. Patch was curled up on his side, top paw over his bottom paws. When I opened the cubby door, he didn’t move but opened his eyes wide. He didn’t move when I put squeeze-up in a dish in the cubby. I didn’t try to pet him; I just slow talked to him for a while. He stared at me the entire team I was talking to him; so, I kept the interaction short. 9/17/24 Was resting inside the cubby upon approach. Alert with eyes wide. He ate offered treats and allows petting. Head bunts against the hand after a few strokes. Remains still in position. Continues to be wary with his surrounding. 9/18/24 Vol. On approach he was at the back of the upper cubby. He was wide eyed and crouched. He turned his head away from a treat I offered to him on an outstretched tool. When I pulled back and sat waiting and talking to him, it got very noisy in the room and he ran away to the other side of the kennel. He crouched at the back of the other cubby. I gave him some encouraging talk and I then turned my attention to his kennel mate and possible sibling Spatch. 9/19/24 FB26 Resting inside the cubby. Tolerant with contact. Ate offered treats while he remains immobile in place. Wary with his surroundings while he scans the room. 9/21/24 FB26 Continues to display the same behavior from before. Tolerant to human contact with with no further interest in walking towards the front. 9/24/24 Vol. Came right up to kennel door for attention. Not interested in Squeeze-up, Ate chicken filet I put in his dish. Spent several minutes petting him and giving him love. Sweet boy! 9/25/24 Vol. Patch was resting in loaf position in his cubby. His eyes and ears were neutral. He returned slow blinks and came forward to sniff at squeeze up. He head bunted and leaned into petting on his cheeks and chin. He stood with his tail in the air, and leaned out of cubby to look around the room. He appeared calm even when the room became loud and busy. He purred softly and continued to solicit attention. 10/2/24 Vol. Patch was lying on his side in kennel, resting next to his friend Spatch. He looked up and returned slow blinks when approached. He head bunted and leaned into petting while remaining in his lying position. He rolled over onto his back and continued to solicit attention, remaining calm and relaxed throughout interaction.

ACTIVITY LEVEL:: Lively

VOCAL:: Somewhat chatty

CHARACTER TYPE: : Social,Sweet,Affectionate,Insistent,Playful,People oriented,Easy going,Curious

POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:: New home adjustment period

Potential challenges comments:: Patch should be given a slow introduction to the home, one room at a time starting in a small room like a bathroom with food, litter and water. High levels of FAS seen at the Care Center strongly suggest that he will hide if allowed. Interact with him in this room until he seems sufficiently confident that you feel you can introduce him to the next part of the home without running the risk that he will hide. Please speak to an adoption counselor for additional information on methods to help introduce your cat to the home.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : Level 1

RECOMMENDATIONS:: No young children

Recommendations comments:: No young children under 5 years old due to high FAS during new home adjustment period, subject to counselor discretion.

BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: 09.10.2024: Upon approach Patch was laying in the middle of the kennel looking from under his brows at the high-value treat presented. As the assessor offered Squeeze-up to his sibling, he very slowly raised a paw and slinked into the back corner to hide behind him (face towards the wall). Frozen in place, he tolerated being petted all over with the scratch tool and by hand. He was calm and relaxed when the assessor simulated pick up by applying gentle upward pressure on his abdomen for 10 seconds. He continued trying to make himself small once placed back down. 10.10.2024: Patch meowed, rubbed his body against the kennel door and reached through the bars to get the assessor's attention. Once the door was open he walked back and forth vigorously head-bunting and rubbing against the assessor on each pass. He raised his hips high during deep back strokes and purred loudly. He was calm and relaxed when the assessor picked him up and held him for 10 seconds. Patch was fearful when initially in shelter. With an extended period of adjustment, he came out of his shell and is social, active, outgoing and very affectionate! He interacts with the assessor, solicits attention, is easy to handle and tolerates all petting. This cat is suitable for any level of adopter experience.
