Pookie is on the At Risk list due to behavior. He is not thriving in the care center and continues to display distance-increasing behavior when approached for interactions. He has not warmed up despite staff using treats to build a positive association. Due to his stress levels, it is in his best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. He would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give him plenty of time and space to adjust, and who have experience with helping a fearful cat adjust to strangers.
Let's get to know each other a bit more...

What my friends at ACC say about me: I lived with children in my previous home. I would do best in a home without very tiny humans, although I could be open to older human children once I meet them. I have lived with cats in my previous home. I am finding the shelter a little overwhelming, but when it's just you and me and some peace and quiet you'll see what a love bug I am. I am looking for a home with a patient person. I can be slow to adjust to new environments. I prefer to take things at my own pace. I will flourish in a calm environment and a low-traffic home. I would appreciate slow introductions to new people and places to help me feel safe. I'm sensitive and shy. I'll need extra help from you. A volunteer writes: Pookie is a gentle cat who loves a good assignment. He's currently gone undercover as a turtle and is using his den as his shell. It's for a temporary project in Cat Adoptions. He can't share any more details and please don't tell him I said anything. In reality, Pookie's a cat himself and his imaginative game serves an important purpose as adapting to shelter life hasn't come easily. In his previous home, Pookie was known as an adorably gentle cat who can be a little shy around new people and cats, but hopes and waits for the chance to play with everyone. We see this in the way he pops his head out of his den with wide hopeful eyes to see what everyone is doing before pulling back in just as quickly, kind of like the turtle he's trying to be. Pookie has had better days and he'll certainly have more. He only needs another chance.

ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 01/22/25 FB61 In cat den upon approach, body and face initially hidden from view. He peers his head out very slightly to watch me as I open the kennel door - ear and half of face visible. He hisses as the kennel door opens and he hisses with his ears flattening after each treat offered. I speak to him softly and slow-blink before ending the session. Needs more time to adjust. 01/27/25 FB61 In cat den upon approach and relaxed. He pokes his head out of his den when spoken to, ears flat and face tense, but when I offer some treats he retreats back into his den entirely to hide. I speak to him softly and give him a catnip toy in an attempt to coax him back out but he remains hidden for the duration of time I'm in the room. Needs more time. 01/30/25 FR Upon approach, Pookie is laying in his den and out of view. When the cage door is unlocked, he begins hissing and growling with his head poking out. I offer him hard treats on the scratcher tool and he swats. When I return from getting a squeeze up, he has eaten the treats that fell. When offered squeeze up on the scratcher, he again swats - I place the rest of the squeeze up in a tray and leave it for him before ending the interaction. 2/1/25 F79 Inside of his den Pookie immediately hisses when I approach and speak to him; when I lift the den cover he continues to hiss and has flat ears with a tense body. Pookie hisses when I toss some treats in but leans into sniff the pointer to when I introduced it. He tolerates very brief petting on his head before he snaps over and attempts to bite the tool. When I brought the tool down his back, he briefly tolerated it before swatting and striking. 2/3/25 FB79 Today, Pookie displayed similar behaviors described in the previous enrichment note. Pookie was inside of his den and had a tense body with wide/dilated eyes when the den cover was lifted. He continuously hissed when petting was attempted but did tolerate petting om his cheeks WITH THE TOOL today before starting to low growl/grumble. No swatting or lunging today. 2/07/25 FB61 In cat den upon approach, completely hidden from view. He does not come out when offered a catnip toy or treats. I do not push hands on interaction at this time... hopefully he explores the offerings later when the room is empty and quiet and he feels more safe. His food bowls have been picked at. From staff on 02/7 FB79 Today, he sat curiously looking at it as I dropped some treats in front of him. He ate the treats happily, and though he ignored the ones that were on my hand, he ate the surrounding ones allowing his nose/mouth to bump up against the sides of my hand. After awhile, Pookie went into his den and seemed to be disinterested in the treats. I attempted to lift his den cover, which in the past has caused him to hiss and growl, and he allowed me to lift it with no issue. *see enrichment GAN memo dated 2/7 for more details*
ACTIVITY LEVEL:: Subdued
VOCAL:: Quiet
CHARACTER TYPE: : Shy ,Calm,Timid,Independent
POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:: Inappropriate elimination,Fearful,New home adjustment period
Potential challenges comments:: Pookie was reported to be spraying/peeing in his previous home. Client said he has kind of always done this. At first, they attempted to get try a few different methods to attempt to get him to stop, but over the years they did not find a solution and just kind of dealt with it. They are moving now and cannot have the cast spaying/peeing in the new place. Client said most of this spraying is on clothing piles, corners of furniture and doors. They said this is a daily occurrence. 2/1/25 After monitoring Pookie's litterbox usage, he has been consistently been using the litterbox since 1/21. Will continue to monitor.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : New Hope Only
RECOMMENDATIONS:: No young children,Adult only home
Recommendations comments:: Adult only home due to the behaviors displayed in shelter such as hissing, swatting/striking and lunging.
BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: Pookie is a shy, timid, and independent cat. He was hiding crouched down in the den with his head slightly poking out of the den side door upon approach. When spoken to and opening the door, he begins growling and then he hisses and steps to the back of the den when slowly removing the den cover. He freezes and tenses up, ignoring treats offered, but tolerates cheek rubs and begins to slow blink and lip lick. Pick up was not attempted in order to reduce stress. After lowering the den cover at the end of the interaction, he hisses again. 1/31/25 Pookie has begun to harshly hiss when close contact was made near his kennel as well as swatting and striking the tools when petting was attempted. Upon re-evaluation Pookie is in his den out of sight but pokes his head out when he hears the assessor approaching; he has wide/dilated eyes and slightly tilted ears. He quickly retreats in to the den, continues to hiss when the kennel door is opened and strikes the pointer tool when it was brought close. When the den cover was lifted for a better view, Pookie has a very tense body with tilted, flickering ears and dilated eyes as he very closely watches the tool for any movement. When the tool was brought into the den he hisses, strikes the tool multiple times then starts to low grumble while very briefly tolerating pets on his head/cheeks as well as down his back before he once again attempts to swat and bite at the tool. Pick up was not attempted. Pookie is displaying behaviors that preclude placement in the adoptions room and/or may require further investigation before placement in a home. He has tried to swat/bite, is extremely fearful in the shelter environment and does not currently tolerate petting or handling. The behavior department feels that placement with a New Hope Partner is the best option at this time.
