Animal Profile

Nelly

Hello, my name is Nelly. My animal id is #260042. I am a desexed male gray tabby cat at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 6 years 2 months 2 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a aco - owner surrender on 7/17/2026, with the surrender reason stated as person health - medical.

Nelly is on the at-risk list due to behavior. He is not thriving in the care center and continues to display distance-increasing behavior when approached for interactions. He has not warmed up despite staff using treats to build a positive association. Due to his stress levels, it is in his best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. He would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give him plenty of time and space to adjust, and who have experience with helping a fearful cat adjust to strangers.

Let's get to know each other a bit more...

What my friends at ACC say about me: I have lived with cats in my previous home. I would appreciate slow introductions to new people and places to help me feel safe. I'm sensitive and shy. I'll need extra help from you.

ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 7/23/26 FB25 Nelly is crouched at the back of the side cubby behind his litter box. He has very wide eyes with dilated pupils, watching me with a hard stare, his body tight and scrunched into the corner. I slow blink and talk softly to him, and place treats on the wall, but he just stares at me. He needs some time. He has no great hiding spot, so I fashioned him a box and draped a cover over it. When I walk away and check on him just a few minutes later, he has crawled right into the box. Hopefully it will help him feel safer. 7/27/26 FB79 Nelly is inside his box, out of sight when i entered the kennel; i started to speak softly and when i tossed in treats he slowly leaned out to sniff but was hesitant due to the loud sounds in the room. I kept speaking to him softly and when i brought the tool in for him to sniff he remained pressed into the corner of the box. He was slightly tense with wide eyes and his body crouched but he tolerated pets on his back/body. 7/28/26 Vol He was face first in the box. I tried treats but he was not moving.  7/30/26 FB25 Nelly is inside of his box today with a tight body and his head pressed to the back. I turn it slightly so I'm able to see him, and he scrunches his legs and tail tighter beneath himself. When I can see his face, I see that he has extremely dilated pupils and wide eyes, with forward ears and whiskers. I put treats outside the box, talk softly to him, and sit for a while slow blinking. He has no reaction except to stare at me. He's very fearful and frozen. I requested we start him on Gaba, hopefully we can help him relax a bit. 08/08/26 FB47 Nelly is nestled in his box. When I enter the kennel and greet him I get no response. I slowly lift the blanket coving his box, he looks back at me with wide eyes. He turns away and presses his head against the box. I talk quietly to him and leave him treats. 8/11/26 FB61 In hidey box upon approach, body and face tense with his ears tilted. I try petting him and he shuffles further into his box while flattening his ears further and tucking his tail around his body. I drop some treats into his box and I see his head lowering so he can eat them! Will continue to build positive associations. Not thrilled with petting... yet... but, he has potential. 8/16/26 FB25 Nelly is inside of his box with a tense body and wide-eyed expression. I sit with him for a while slow blinking. He relaxes slightly but not much. He tenses when I open the door and bring in treats. When I bring a scratcher tool with squeeze up toward him, he presses himself farther away and lip-licks. I sit for a bit and talk softly to him and leave him with lots of treats and a catnip toy. -GAN

BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: Upon approach, Nelly is crouched in the back corner of the kennel, pressed into the wall with his limbs tucked tightly beneath him. He has wide eyes with dilated pupils and forward ears, his body tense. He lick-lips as the assessor slowly opens the door, speaking softly to him. He has no reaction to treats being set down, keeping his hard stare on the assessor. A scratcher tool is used to pass over his head, under his chin and along his body. He tolerates all touch, remaining frozen and tense, one ear turning downward. Once the tool is removed, the assessor crouches down a bit closer to him and slow blinks. He does return a few slow blinks, but remains tense and unmoving otherwise. No pick up is attempted due to his level of FAS. 8/20/26 Nelly displayed similar behaviors during his reassessment. 9/20/26 FB25 Nelly is inside of a cave bed in the Free Roam Room. He looks at the assessor with wide eyes and dilated pupils. He watches them intently and cannot be coaxed forward for treats. He tolerates the tool being pet on his head, and sniffs treats placed on it. When it is run along his body, he hisses and swats at it once. When the assessor removes the tool and sits beside him slow blinking, he remains frozen and alert. No pick up is attempted. Nelly tolerates attention and petting but appears fearful or stressed in the shelter. He may be a little more independent, and may need time to warm up to his new home. We recommend that this cat go to an adult only home with experienced cat parents.
