Date of assessment:: 8/30/2023

Summary:: Due to Kash's escalation to staff by snapping and baring teeth staff when attempting to handle, a behavior assessment could not be conducted.

Summary (2):: 9/4/23: Kash is at the front of the kennel with a wagging tail towards the handler. Once the handler opens the gate, Kash sniffs the handler and licks the hanlders hands. Once Kash saw the leash, he begins to back up and dodge the leash, he is leashed and toweled to be brought into the assessment room, to which he slightly thrashed but did not attempt to bite. Kash is brought into the room on a drag leash and explores his surroundings, periodically jumping on the handler and soliciting attention. Kash this time around is much more tolerant of getting leashed, but when toweled thrashes and attempting to bite through the towel. Kash jumps back into his kennel with no issue. 09/03/23 (PM) When the handler approaches the kennel, Kash is standing still. The handler unlocks the kennel and Kash comes forward jumping onto the handler. The handler carries him to the assessment room. Kash has a drag leash placed onto him and allows him to free roam. Kash collects treats off the floor as well as when administered to him. As the handler attempts to pick him up, Kash begins to snap at the handler. The handler attempts to pick him up again and Kash snaps again. Another handler is able to pick Kash up and take him to his kennel. He jumps in with no issue.

Summary (3):: 9/3: Kash is lying down at the back of his kennel when approached. When he sees the handler, he slowly begins to come to the front as the handler coaxes him with a soft voice and soft treats. The handler offers a handful of the treats and as he eats, the handler slowly clips the lead to his color. Kash rears back and his head whips after, but the lead is already secured. The handler then covers him with a towel to pick him up and carry him to the assessment room. Kash does thrash briefly under the towel but quickly settles. Once in the room, Kash explores the room, sniffing for treats before returning to the handler that brought him into the room. He solicits brief petting but begins to lip lick and walks away to shake it off. Kash continues to accept treats and explore before the session is over. The handler uses a slow approach to pick up Kash to return him to his kennel. 9/2/23: Kash is at the back of his kennel when the handler approaches. Kash when trying to be leash snaps at the leash and bares teeth when seeing the rope. Kash was then toweled and he thrash and attempting to bite the handler when being brought to the assessment room. When Kash is brought into the assessment room he is loose and wiggly, and jumps on the handlers. Kash is uncomfortable with any form of petting and whale eyes the handler. Kash explores the room and when is being leashed back to his kennel he continues to bite the rope and even at one point charging the towel that the handler was trying to put on him. Kash thrashed again and attempting to bite the handler, and was put back in his kennel. 8/30/23: Handler approaches Kash's kennel and Kash runs to the back, pressing himself against the far wall with a tense body and whale eyes. He begins to snarl as the leash is brought towards him and repeatedly lunges towards and bites at the leash. Handler tosses a significant number of treats which Kash begins to eat readily. Handler is able to lasso Kash, but he flails and snaps momentarily when he realizes the leash is around him. Handler places a towel over Kash and lifts him, Kash begins to thrash and snap until he is placed on the ground. He is brought into the assessment room where, with slow movement and food as a distraction, he tolerates a slip lead with a stopper being placed. He displays conflicted behavior, approaching staff, but tensing, licking his lips, and turning away when handler attempts to make contact. The slip leads are swapped again and Kash is toweled and picked up. He begins to thrash and attempt to bite handler, so handler places him on the ground and allows him to walk back to his kennel. Once in the kennel room the towel is placed over him once again and he is quickly lifted into his kennel.

Potential challenges: : Handling/touch sensitivity,Fearful/potential for defensive aggression

Potential challenges comments:: Handling/touch sensitivity: Kash has shown in care escalating to growling, snapping when being picked up/handled. Positive reinforcement, reward based training should be used to pair touch with good things such as food rewards in order to teach Kash to be more comfortable with this. See handout on Handling and Touch Sensitivity and Decompression Period. Fearful/potential for defensive aggression: Kash has been intensely fearful in the care center and escalates to baring teeth and snapping at staff. It is important to go slow and allow him to set the pace and tone of interactions. Please see handout on Fearful and Defensive Aggression.
