Animal Profile

Sparkle

Hello, my name is Sparkle. My animal id is #222656. I am a female brown dog at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 1 years 6 months 1 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a agency on 3/18/2025.

Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.

Pre-Screener Form

Sparkle is currently at risk due to behavior reasons. Sparkle has been tense with handlers since she arrived at the care center as a stray. She will stare at people on the street with a tense body as they pass and stare at staff when a handling assessment is attempted. Sparkle will randomly jump on handlers and mouth them out of kennel, as well as snap towards handlers hands when leashing is attempted in kennel. Recently she fixated on handlers feet and legs turning towards them as handler walked alongside her. Medically, Sparkle is apparently healthy.

What my friends at ACC say about me: My history is a mystery and my friends here do not know much about me yet! I would appreciate slow introductions to new people and places to help me feel safe. I prefer to call the shots and enjoy coming to you when I'm ready for pets. I would do best in a home with only adult humans. I don't always like to share my food, toys or bedding with other animals. I'm ready to learn! I need a patient person who has the time to work on training with me.

Summary:: 3/26/25: Sparkle greets another dog at the gate with a tense body pushing her nose through the fence.

Summary (6):: 03/30/25: Sparkle is laying down at the center of her kennel as handlers approach. She is offered treats but does not accept. Sparkle is leashed without issue and taken to the yard for her walk. During her walk Sparkle walks slightly in front of handler and pulls mildly. She walks past most of the backyard vestibules without reacting but when she sees a dog approach the gate and begin reacting to her she recoils quickly and backs away before reapproaching and attempting to pull towards the other dog. She is coaxed away by handler and follows them to the back of the yard. She sniffs around the back play yards and occasionally stares at the dogs in the other play yards, she also does not accept treats while outside. She is eventually brought back to kennel and clipped before returning without issue. 3/28/25: Sparkle is standing at the front with neutral body. Handler offers her a treat through the kennel bars, and Sparkle turns her head away. Handler is able to leash her and remove her from kennel without issue. She is walked on the street pulling slightly ahead of handler. After relieving herself, Sparkle turns towards handler, putting her head down close to handlers foot. Handler tightens the leash and steps away from Sparkles. Sparkles then jumps up towards handler. Handler straight arms her and she jumps again. Handler begins to walk back towards the shelter keeping the leash short and tight. Sparkles will turn her head towards handler's legs but can not do much as handler had her on a short tight leash. She is returned to kennel without further issue. 3/25/25: Sparkle is lying down in kennel and begins lip licking when approached. Handler opens the kennel and drapes the leash over her slowly and she suddenly jumps up towards handler's hand and leash, handler pulls back quickly. She remains standing on hind legs at front of kennel, handler offers her a treat and she takes it softly. The leash is placed over her head and she is taken out to the backyard for a dog-dog interaction. When returning to kennel she stops in middle of room, slight leash pressure is applied and she is returned to her kennel without issue.

Summary (7):: 3/25/25: ACS report that Sparkle jumped up and mouthed them without warning. It is also reported that she is highly dog reactive. 3/23/25: Sparkles is siting at the front of kennel as handler approaches. She then stands up and is comfortable taking treats. When being leashed she begins to backup and would jump and mouth at the leash. She isn’t able to be distracted with treats and would eat them and jump up at the leash again. Another handler comes to help, and she is able to be distracted with treats. But each time the leash got close, she would jump up and then go back to the treats. After giving her a quick break, she was able to be leashed and taken outside for a walk. On the walk, she would pull hard ahead and become tense and hard stare at people and dogs. She is then taken to the behavior room for her assessment. She would hard stare at the handlers in the room. Please see behavior assessment notes for more details. On the way back to kennel, she stopped walking and coaxed her body low to the ground in the kennel room. She walks in with ease when comfortable. 3/22/25: Staff reported that when trying to leash Sparkle she would snap towards their hand. She did not respond to treats. Handlers were able to successfully leash with a slow approach. Sparkle planted outside of kennel and was able to be placed in kennel by applying some leash pressure. 3/19/25: Sparkle is lying down, curled up in the front of the kennel. Handler drops some treats in and she sniffs them. She is easily leashed and taken out to the driveway. She spots a dog and stops and hard stares. Handler uses vocal cues to call her, then a squeaker and she is lead away to the street. On the street she pulls moderate to hard ahead of the handler. Sparkle is aloof with handler during the walk, walking slightly ahead. A parent and child pass Sparkle and she stops and hard stares them watching them pass. As she is walked ahead she looks back at them. When returning to the building, handler leads Sparkle through the garage where she stops and does not move forward. When leash tension is applied she lowers. Handler goes towards the back door where she passes a dog and hard stares them. Handler leads her away and as the doors are opened she jumps back quickly with a lowered body and ears pinned. She is brought to the behavior office for her assessment where she hesitant to approach the assessor. Sparkle did not allow collaring at the time with slow approach or treats. She is returned to her kennel where she stops outside the kennel. Treats are tossed but she does not enter. Slight pressure to the leash is applied to return her.

Summary:: Reported to be friendly

Date of initial:: 3/19/2025

Summary:: Very fearful and nervous, tail tucked, trying to resist/ bite with muzzle on

ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on Sparkle so we cannot be certain of their behavior in a home environment. However, they will need daily mental and physical activity to stay engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct their energy and enthusiasm.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only

Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Place with a New Hope partner

Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to fearful behavior we recommend an adult only home. We recommend placement with a New Hope rescue partner who is able to provide an experienced, adult-only foster home. Force-free, reward based training and/or consultation with a professional trainer/behaviorist is highly recommended.

Potential challenges: : Resource guarding,Basic manners/poor impulse control,Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition,Fearful/potential for defensive aggression,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration

Potential challenges comments:: Resource Guarding: Sparkle has been observed to become tense, hover and headwhip when approached with a toy in her possession. Nothing should ever be taken directly out of Sparkle's mouth, and any time something is removed they should be rewarded with a high value treat or toy. Please see handout on Resource Guarding. Basic Manners/ Mouthiness: Sparkle has been observed to jump up and mouth handlers. It is recommended that default behaviors such as "Sit" and "Off" are reinforced to substitute any frustration and teach them to control their impulses instead of simply reacting; proper management is also advised. Force-free, reward-based training only is recommended. Please see handout on Basic Manners. Please see handout on Mouthiness. Fearful Defensive: Sparkle has been observed to thrash on leash and snap towards the leash and handlers hands. During her assessment Sparkle was observed to have a tense body and head whip towards handlers. During her medical exam, Sparkle was observed to attempt to mouth handlers with the muzzle on. It is important to move slowly with Sparkle, to build positive associations (treats/toys/praise), and to allow them to initiate interactions with new people. They should never be forced to greet or to interact if they are not comfortable and soliciting attention. Please see handout on Fearful and Defensive Aggression. On Leash Reactivity: Sparkle has been observed to hard stare towards people and dogs while on leash. Sparkle will need positive reinforcement, reward based training to teach them to look at you rather than dogs and other stimuli. We recommend a front clip harness to help manage this behavior. Please see handout on On Leash Reactivity and Barrier Frustration.
