Animal Profile

Springtime

Hello, my name is Springtime. My animal id is #250379. I am a male tabby cat at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 1 years 1 months 2 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a agency on 3/23/2026.

Springtime is on the At Risk list due to behavior. He is not thriving in the care center and continues to display challenging behavior during interactions. He is intelligent and playful and needs to expend energy constructively with interactive play sessions. In addition to playtime, this cat would also benefit from mental exercise from activities such as puzzle toys/games, lick mats, or clicker training. He does display social behaviors but appears conflicted in care, not consistently allowing interaction and escalating to swatting, hissing, and lunging when he is overstimulated. It is in his best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. He would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give him plenty of time and space to adjust, and who have experience with feline body language and overstimulation and who have the time to invest in managing these behaviors on a consistent basis to avoid further scratch incidents.

What my friends at ACC say about me: My history is a mystery and my friends here do not know much about me yet! I'm an independent kitty who likes to do my own thing. I would appreciate slow introductions to new people and places to help me feel safe. I will flourish in a calm environment and a low-traffic home. Springtime tolerates attention and petting but appears fearful or stressed in the shelter. He may be a little more independent, and may need time to warm up to his new home. We recommend that this cat go to a home with experienced cat parents. A volunteer writes: Springtime came to us courtesy of the NYPD. His crime? Simply finding himself all alone, with no human home to go to anymore. While he's waiting for new pet parents to fall in love with him, he's adjusting well at the Care Center. Springtime is a shy, calm, quiet youngster who shows interest in the humans who drop by to coax him out of his shell. When I met him last night, he was sitting on top of his cat den, observing me with soft blinks and seemingly unbothered by the sights and sounds of the cat adoption room. Springtime has been enjoying his treats and accepting some pettings, but what he really needs is a new person to come by and declare, "you're going home with me!" Make it happen for this good boy by introducing yourself to him at the Care Center today!

Behavior Condition: 3. Yellow

KNOWN HISTORY:: Springtime was brought in as a stray, there is no known information on his behavior history in a home environment Upon intake the cat was alert and curious, looking around. The cat allowed all handling.

ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 3/26/26 PRIOR ASSESSMENT Springtime is laying inside of his den with moderately dilated eyes and tilted ears. He sniffs offered treats and eats one gingerly. When pet on his cheeks with the scratcher tool, he backs up slightly and turns to watch when pet along his body. The assessor offers their hand, but he flinches back. When the kennel door is closed, Springtime peeks his head out of the portal to watch curiously. 4/6/26 PRIOR ASSESSMENT Springtime has made nice improvement since his first assessment and now lays quietly in the cubby, sniffed treats, accepted petting, and is calm. He allowed petting on the top of his head and appeared to enjoy it and did not get upset. 3/24/26 FB73 Springtime is laying on top of his den, paws crossed in front of him, pupils dilated and making soft eye contact towards the handler as they approach. He allows petting on the head and cheeks, slightly tense but showing no signs of escalation. 3/26/26 FB20 Springtime was observed to hiss and spit during cleaning, retreat to the top of his den. 3/27/26 Vol. Springtime was lying on top of den, resting on his side with his limbs spread out. His pupils were large. He leaned forward to sniff at treats on scratcher tool but did not eat. He watched a feather toy for a few moments, remaining in place on top of den with a relaxed body. He tolerated very brief petting on his head with scratcher tool, then moved back, resting in a crouched position and appearing somewhat tense. 3/28/26 Vol. Was lying down facing forward when approached, spoken to, door opened looking at me. When spoken to, he will “grin” like he’s about the meow. Then he meowed after being spoken to for the third time. I stepped away momentarily and he was closer to the door and hissed when I returned. Went to the back of the kennel facing forward. Offered treats and slid them closer to him with scratcher tool. Ignored treats. Approached slowly with scratcher tool to slowly pet him, he started to sit up as it got closer. If step away momentarily he will eat treats. Gave him a little bit of lickable treat in a tray. Left a felt square sprayed with Feliway.  He went on top of his den box and hissed. 4/1/26 Vol. Springtime appears relaxed on top of his den, whiskers back, he blinks slowly with pupils slightly dilated, ears up. He dodged the tool extended with the treat and ignored crunchy treats deposited on top of the den, eyes remaining soft. He remains immobile when pet with the back of the tool on his forehead and on the top of his head but turned his head sharply when pet down his back. He recovered quickly, again allowing head pets. No hand pets were attempted. CONTINUED IN GAN

He tolerates some petting on the head with the assessor's hand before pulling back, lip licking with dilated pupils. He continues to accept crunchy treats but remains tense throughout the rest of the interaction. Pickup is not attempted due to observed behavior.
