Winks often presents with a loose, wiggly body, seeks affection. While often easily leashed and social, he frequently escalates by jumping and persistently attempting to mount handlers, sometimes ignoring cues once aroused. Redirection is generally effective using treat scatters or distance, but the behavior reoccurs across settings and handlers. Winks is available for rescue through one of our new hope partners.

It is the policy of ACC not to perform surgery on any animal over the age of 8-10 years due to the higher risks incurred in a shelter setting. The veterinarian is hereby issuing a permanent spay/neuter waiver, from the spay/neuter requirements of the City of NY due to the estimated age of this animal. ACC does recommend you consult with your veterinarian to determine if surgical sterilization is appropriate.

They are separated and returned to kennel, concluding the interaction. 10/09/25 Winks is introduced at the gate to a female helper dog while off leash at the care center. Winks will approach the gate with a neutral body, sniff the female dog and ignore her. Winks is aloof at this point, ignoring the female dog for the rest of the interaction as he seeks attention from the handler present in her pen. 09/22/25 Winks is introduced to a novel male dog while off leash at the care center. Winks will approach the gate with a soft, wiggly body offering a slight bounce. The male dog however appears conflicted, reluctant to reapproach the gate. BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only
Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Place with a New Hope partner
Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): We recommend Winks be placed in an adult-only home at this time. Place with a New Hope partner: Winks came into the care center as an owner surrender. He is social/affectionate, very active and playful and can be vocal. He likes to be where people are and in the living room and allows family to bathe and brush. In the care center Winks engage readily in training, and respond to cues such as leave it, sit, and touch, and respond well to enrichment, including snuffle mats, lick mats, toys, and treat scatters.
Potential challenges: : Resource guarding,Basic manners/poor impulse control,Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition,Handling/touch sensitivity,Low threshold for arousal
Potential challenges comments:: Resource Guarding: Winks displays resource guarding behavior around food and treats, showing a tense body and hovering when approached. If his warnings are not respected, he escalates to growling and lip curling. Training should focus on desensitization and counter-conditioning around valued items, using trade-up techniques and reinforcing relaxed behavior to build trust and reduce guarding tendencies. Please see the handout on Resource Guarding. Basic Manners / Poor Impulse Control: Winks exhibits poor impulse control, frequently jumping up on handlers. Training should include teaching polite greetings, reinforcing calm behavior, and using consistent redirection to help him develop better self-regulation in social interactions. Please see the handout on Basic Manners / Poor Impulse Control. Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition: While she applies only light pressure, Winks was mouthy throughout the assessment and is quick to put his teeth on skin. This is likely an attention-seeking behavior, but it should be replaced with an alternative behavior as it can frighten people. We recommend never playing with bare hands – always with a toy - and ending play or attention whenever Winks puts teeth on skin. He should be rewarded with attention and treats when she stops and/or when he is seeking attention in alternate ways. Handling / Touch Sensitivity / Fearful / Potential for Defensive Aggression: Winks shows sensitivity to restraint, barking, growling, and snapping when held. While he tolerates being disturbed during sleep or moved off furniture, he reacts by yanking his feet away when touched. These mixed responses suggest selective touch sensitivity. Training should focus on cooperative care, gradual desensitization to handling, and reinforcing calm behavior to reduce fear and prevent defensive reactions. Please see the handout on Handling / Touch Sensitivity / Fearful / Potential for Defensive Aggression. Low threshold for arousal: Winks is noted to mount handlers in the play-yard and while on walks, requiring multiple handlers to remove him.Training should focus on structured, low-arousal sessions, reinforcing calm alternative behaviors, and interrupting mounting early with redirection to help him develop better self-control. Please see the handout on arousal.
