Pre-Screener Form

Apollo is on the at-risk list for behavior. Apollo arrived at MACC as an owner surrender. It is reported in his previous home Apollo was involved in three incidents that were bites and releases. All three situations seem to be related to guarding owner and child in home. Apollo's previous owner notes that he is generally a couch potato, is social, and affectionate with familiar people. In care, Apollo was initially tense but has warmed up to staff, is easily walked, has a soft body with handlers, and allows petting. Medically, Apollo is noted to be underweight and is developing CIRDC.

Behavior Condition: 3. Yellow

Upon intake, Apollo showed a tense body but when I began to speak to him he showed a loose body and approached me. He began to lick my hand and rub his body against my legs. The client waited a long time while we looked for the space, however, Apollo laid down and was very aloof. Apollo was easily leashed and was very friendly with admissions staff while we waited for space. He walked next to me. He did squirm during vaccines but never escalated. We ran to his kennel and went inside by himself with no issues.

Place with New Hope Partner: Apollo has escalated to biting several times. We recommend placement with an experienced New Hope Partner that can carefully manage his triggers.

Potential challenges: : Fearful/potential for defensive aggression,Multiple-bite history/risk of future aggression,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration,Bite history (human),Bite history (dog)

Potential challenges comments:: Fearful/potential defensive aggression: Apollo has a reported bite in the home when someone entered that home. He gives clear warnings when he is uncomfortable, but has escalated to biting. It is important to move slowly with Apollo, to build positive associations (treats/toys/praise), and to allow Apollo to initiate interactions with new people. He should never be forced to greet or to interact if he is not comfortable and soliciting attention. Please see hand-out on Fearful and Defensive Aggression. Multiple Bite History (human and dog): Escalating to biting is a behavior that Apollo has rehearsed repeatedly. This behavior is likely to continue as it has become part of Apollo's repertoire, and will need careful management to work toward reducing triggers for Benny and reducing the resulting bites. Please see hand-out on Bite-History On-leash reactivity: Apollo's previous owner reported that he will react to other dogs on leash, lunging towards them, barking and growling. Apollo may need positive reinforcement, reward based training to teach him to look at you rather than other dogs. We recommend a front clip harness or head halter to help manage this behavior. Please see hand-out for On-Leash Reactivity and Barrier Frustration.
