Animal Profile

Princess Piper

Hello, my name is Princess Piper . My animal id is #230191. I am a female brown brindle dog at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 10 years 2 months 3 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 6/23/2025, with the surrender reason stated as other.

Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.

Pre-Screener Form

Princess Piper is at risk due to behavior concerns. Her previous owner stated that she is on leash reactive and will lunge, hard bark, and growl towards dogs. Additionally, she is also people reactive, noted to actively lunge at them while snarling and hard barking. In a recent incident in the care centers, Princess lunged towards a person that was walking past in the stairwell and she bit and held their pants causing a small tear. She has warmed up to some staff and has allowed handling. Medically, she apparently has a mass and nuclear sclerosis.

I need a home where there are no other dogs. I need a home without cats or small animals. I would do best in a home with only adult humans. I'm sensitive and shy. I'll need extra help from you. I prefer to call the shots and enjoy coming to you when I'm ready for pets. I am a sweet, social, older gentleman, looking for the perfect forever home! I have medical needs that staff will address with you when you meet me.

Princess bit and held onto a visitors pant leg. The bite didn't make contact with skin but left a small tear on the bottom of their pant leg. Volunteer had to use leash pressure and mild muscle to pull her away until she let go. 9/12/25 (Late Entry): It is observed that when a staff member walked past Princess Piper's crate, she charged at them. 09/07/25: Princess Piper is at the front of her kennel as handler approaches. She is leashed while distracted with treats and taken to the street for her walk. While outside Piper is aloof and does not respond to handler when called or accept treats. Piper walks slowly down the street and stops frequently to sniff around and use the bathroom. Piper walks with handler for a while and passes people and dogs without issue. She walks for a bit more before being brought back to kennel. She returns without issue and interaction is ended shortly after. 8/17/25: Princess Piper is at the front of her kennel jumping up on the door with a soft body. She jumps down and she is easily leashed. She is taken for a street walk. She walks on a loose leash and has a mild pull towards spots to sniff. When people pass her she has a slight pull towards them, wanting to sniff with a soft body. Handler offers her treats and she very gently takes them. She allows handler to per her head, neck and back. Princess piper is easily clipped and returned to her kennel without issue. 8/10/25: Princess Piper is at the front of the kennel with a soft body and wagging tail. She is easily leashed and taken out of the room. Princess Piper is brought to the street where she walks with a loose leash besides the handler. She stops to sniff various spots and relieves herself. Princess Piper ignores people that pass by. She is aloof with the handler throughout the walk as Princess Piper is walked back to the shelter. At the elevator to return upstairs, she tries to pull in the opposite direction her body in a forward posture. Handler scatters treats and she ignores them. When the elevator doors open directional leash pressure is used to turn her into the elevator. She stops and eats the treats off the ground and slight leash tension is used to guide her further into the elevator. Princess Piper is then walked back to her kennel and is returned without issue.

Force-free, reward based training and/or consultation with a professional trainer/behaviorist is highly recommended.

Potential challenges: : On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration,Bite history (human)

Potential challenges comments:: Bite History (Human): Please see bite history above for more details. Please see handout on Bite History and Potential for Future Aggression. On Leash Reactivity: Princess Piper's previous owner states that she will hard bark and lunge towards people. Princess will also lunge, hard bark, and growl towards dogs. During her stay in the care center Princess lunged towards a person that was passing and bit and held their pant leg. Princess will need positive reinforcement, reward based training to teach them to look at you rather than dogs and other stimuli. We recommend a front clip harness to help manage this behavior. Please see handout on On Leash Reactivity and Barrier Frustration.
