Red is on the at-risk list for behavioral concerns. Red arrived to the care center as a owner surrender. In the care center, Red takes treats and allows handling. However, Red is also highly dog reactive and attempts to cage fight coming out and returning to kennel. Red has previously also jumped up and bit and released a handlers hand when attempting to leash him. The bite didn't break skin. Red remains hypervigilant on walks and reactive to people and dogs on the street. Medically, Red has an ear infection.

What my friends at ACC say about me: Not only do I pull at heart strings, but I also pull on leash! I will need someone to help me with my leash manners. I need a home without cats or small animals. I'm ready to learn! I need a patient person who has the time to work on training with me. I love getting pets and - you guessed it - snuggles! I would do best in a home with only adult humans.

Summary:: 11/5/24: Red greets another dog at the gate with neutral body. He disengages and when he reapproaches, he is tense and hard barks.
Summary (5):: 12/7/24- Red is at the front of his kennel with loose body, he takes a treat that is offered. He is easily leashed, when he exits the room he pull hard towards the passing kennels and tries to cage fight. While waiting for the elevator, handler kept tossing treats on the ground to keep Red distracted from the pop up crates. He was taken for a street walk, when in the driveway and nearing the gate Red starts to baulk and turns around, pulling hard. Handler tosses some treats ahead and he walks forward a little then turns back pulling hard. Handler slowly coaxed him out of the gate wit treats, he would walk out then turn back again. Handler returned to the driveway, Red would zig zag pulling to go back in the building. He stopped momentarily and sniffed a spot, he relieved himself. Once done relieving himself, he again pulled back. Handler went to return him and once in the elevator, Red sat and took treats again from handler gently. He was easily clipped and when returning to kennel, he didn't cage fight and ran straight into kennel without issue. 12/05/24: Red is standing at the front of his kennel with a loose and wiggly body when the handler approaches. He is easily leashed and taken to the street. When passing a dog, he begins pulling towards them and is not able to be redirected with treats or a squeaker and has to be pulled away. After crossing the street, Red continuously turns towards the building while the handler tries to call him forward. He doesn't react to the handlers coaxing, now pulling hard towards the building. He pulls hard the entire way back to the building and to his room. He is easily reclipped and returned to kennel with no issue. 11/23/24: Red is standing in the front of his kennel as handler approaches. He is leashed while distracted with treats which he takes frantically before being leashed and brought to the street for his walk. While walking Red pulls hard constantly throughout his walk. He walks past people on the street without issue but will pull towards dogs he spots on the street. He will also turn to face handler at random points during his walk and is not redirected with treats tossed in front of him. Handler brings Red back to the building and returns him to kennel without issue.
Summary (6):: 11/9/24: Red is standing in the front of his kennel as handler approaches. He vocalizes briefly as handler begins unlocking kennel door and settles to allow leashing. While exiting kennel he turns to cage fight with the neighboring dog but is kept away and exits the room to the elevator. Red is offered treats and investigates them but ignores them after a moment. Once on the street Red pulls moderately and walks past people on the street without issue. Red uses the bathroom outside and walks exuberantly with handler. After a while Red is brought back to the building and returns to kennel without issue. 10/28/24: Red is standing at the front of kennel with a neutral body as handler approaches. He is easily leashed and brought outside to the pen. While in the pen, Red relieves himself and spends his time sniffing the ground. There was loud construction happening, and when the noise progressively intensified, Red began looking for an exit. Pacing between one side of the pen, to the other. He was kept on leash. He did not accept treats, and he did not solicit pets. But he maintained a neutral body and was alert when he heard the construction noises. He was brought it with no issue and secured in kennel. 10/27/24: Red is standing in the front of his kennel as handler approaches. He is offered treats but ignores them, after which he is leashed without issue and brought to the street for a walk. Once Red reaches the street he begins to use the bathroom. He pulls moderately during his walk and walks past people on the street without issue. Red will stop frequently during his walk to sniff different areas he passes, handler allows him ample time to stop and sniff till satisfied. As a group of joggers begins coming into view down the street, handler notices Red staring at them with a slightly tense body. He is brought into the street and walked around the joggers precautionarily and Red stares at the group as they pass. Once they are passed he continues walking normally, he returns to the building and returns to kennel without issue.

Once out, he pulls hard towards the other dogs, walking out with his front paws off the ground. He is walked on the street where he is tense bodied and hypervigilant. He will walk a few feet stop look around and/or turn back towards the direction of the shelter. He will not move with treats or sounds from handler. Handler needs to put pressure on the leash to get him to move forward. Once walking back towards the shelter, Red pulls hard. He attempts to cage fight on the way back to his kennel. 10/24/24: It is reported that Red bit an ACS, this bite did not break skin. No further details were acquired. More information was obtained on 10/25/24. The bite occurred when handler was attempting to leash Red. Red was not interested in treats and jumped up biting the handlers hand. Handler offers treats which he investigates before ignoring. He is leashed, during which he is distracted by the other dog barking next door from him and begins barking at them. After exiting kennel he attempts to cage fight in both directions but is kept away, he barks briefly before exiting the room and is taken to the street for a walk. Once outside he pulls moderately and uses the bathroom almost immediately. He will attempt to pull towards some people passing by during his walk and doesn't accept treats while outside. After a while he's brought into the office for an assessment. Once inside he is loose and wiggly and very energetic. ENERGY LEVEL:: Red is described as active and enthusiastic. They will need daily mental and physical activity to keep them engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct their energy and enthusiasm. We recommend feeding with puzzle feeders and food-dispensing toys. And we recommend using force-free, reward-based training techniques for Red.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: Level 4
Recommendations:: No children (under 13),No cats
Recommendations comments:: No young children (under 13): Due to lack of basic manners and on leash reactivity we recommend an adult only home. No cats: Red was reported to lunge at small animals so he should got to a home with no cats.
Potential challenges: : Basic manners/poor impulse control,Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition,Anxiety,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration,Strength/leash pulling
Potential challenges comments:: Basic Manners: Red has been observed to jump up on handlers in a social seeming manner. It is recommended that default behaviors such as "Sit" and "Off" are reinforced to substitute any frustration and teach them to control their impulses instead of simply reacting; proper management is also advised. Force-free, reward-based training only is recommended. Please see handout on Basic Manners. Mouthiness: Red has been observed to jump up and mouth handlers hands when they attempt to leash him. We recommend never playing with bare hands, always with a toy, and ending play or attention whenever Red puts teeth on skin. They should be rewarded with attention and treats when they stop and/or when they are seeking attention in alternate ways. Please see handout on Mouthiness. Anxiety: Red is noted to have anxiety when left alone. He will need daily enrichment to help manage this behavior. Please see the handout on General Anxiety. On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration: Red was reported to lunge at small animals. Red has been observed to hard bark and lunge towards the other dogs in the kennel room. Positive reinforcement should be used to help Red check in with his handler when he is near a trigger. Please see the handout on On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration. Strength/leash pulling: Red was noted to pull hard by his owner. He should get a front clip harness to alleviate his strength. Please see the handout on Leash Manners.
