Scrappy is at risk for behavioral and medical reasons. Behaviorally, Scrappy has a bite history and has displayed handling and touch sensitivities. Scrappy would be best suited for placement with a new hope partner that can provide the necessary behavior modification. Medically, Scrappy was diagnosed with canine infectious respiratory disease complex which is contagious to other animals and will require further care.

Let's get to know each other a bit more...

A volunteer writes; A cute wood critter, a little red fox. This is Scrappy-doo, a lovely and lively gent hosted at the Manhattan Care Center. He is a pleasant walker and a dancer for treats. He asks for lap time, planting his feet on my knees and hops without help for pets. I love his scruffy coat that with proper nutrition will end up rich and bright. Scrappy is an adorable little guy, frisky, sociable and friendly, the perfect companion to complete your life! Come meet him soon and take him home as your forever best friend!

[Spay/Neuter Waiver - Age] It is the policy of ACC not to perform surgery on any animal over the age of 8-10 years due to the higher risks incurred in a shelter setting. The veterinarian is hereby issuing a permanent spay/neuter waiver, from the spay/neuter requirements of the City of NY due to the estimated age of this animal. ACC does recommend you consult with your veterinarian to determine if surgical sterilization is appropriate.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only

Behavior Asilomar: TM - Treatable-Manageable

Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Single-pet home,Recommend no dog parks,Place with a New Hope partner

Recommendations comments:: No children: Due to Scrappy multiple bite history and the potential he has shown to redirect aggression, we recommend an adult only home. Place with a New Hope partner: Due to Scrappy multiple bite history and the potential he has shown to redirect aggression, we recommend placement with a New Hope partner who can provide any necessary behavior modification (force-free, positive reinforcement-based) and re-evaluate behavior in a stable home environment before placement into a permanent home.

Potential challenges: : Bite history (human),Handling/touch sensitivity,Fearful/potential for defensive aggression,Multiple-bite history/risk of future aggression

Potential challenges comments:: Handling/touch sensitivity: Scrappy displays signs of discomfort when being handled. He flinches and moves away and it was noted in his medical exam that he became tense and head flipped when his neck was touched, specifically. He will need a slow approach when handling him. Please see handout on Handling/touch sensitivity. Fearful/potential for defensive aggression: At the care center, Scrappy has been a bit fearful around strangers. During his handling assessment he barked at a stranger when they knocked and entered the room. This suggests that Scrappy does have some potential for defensive aggression when he feels uncomfortable. Please see handout on Fearful/potential for defensive aggression. Multiple-bite history/risk of future aggression: Scrappy bit twice in his previous home, both incidents appear to be when he redirected aggression he was showing towards another dog. (See bite history). Please see handout on Bite History.
