Animal Profile

Lisa

Hello, my name is Lisa. My animal id is #206966. I am a female brown brindle dog at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 1 years 1 months 1 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a agency on 8/6/2024.

Lisa is at risk due to behavioral reasons. During her time at the Care Centers, Lisa has exhibited signs of over-stimulation, including jumping on staff, mouthing them, and grabbing their leashes. Recently, she has been participating in cue training and has shown some improvement, thanks to her strong food motivation. However, she still requires ongoing rewards throughout her walks to effectively manage her behavior. Medically, Lisa is apparently healthy.

What my friends at ACC say about me: My history is a mystery and my friends here do not know much about me yet! Not only do I pull at heart strings, but I also pull on leash! I will need someone to help me with my leash manners. I would do best in a home with only adult humans. I am excitable and energetic! I will need positive outlets for my energy! I love to be loved, but on my own terms! Let's brush up on some canine body language together!

Summary:: 8/15/24: Lisa greets another dog at the gate with exuberant body language (high level of movement, wiggling, jumping up and down, walking back and forth). She sniffs the other dog then turns to handler and jumps up repeatedly onto them.

Summary (4):: 09/10/2024: ACS reported that Lisa did not attempt to leash bite or mouth PPE during her walk this morning . She would jump up at handlers until making it to the street . Once outside , her 4 paws remained on the floor for the majority of the walk. She did not pull or dart around . She walked alongside handler , ocassionally jumping up, demanding treats and then hyper focusing on pouch, but was easily redirected with a treat scatter on the floor. She was brought back to kennel without issue. 09/09/2024: Lisa displayed similar behaviors (as EN 9/05 - present) on her walk with the same handler training loose leash walking and BAT. However, it is important to note that that while passing by another dog, Lisa who was already sitting, actually looked at the dog for a couple seconds, jumped towards them exuberantly, but returned her attention to handler and woudld proceed to sit. Her behavior was managed for a the majority of time while walking back into the care centers. 09/07/2024: Lisa is pawing at the kennel door and barking with a loose body as handler approaches. She is easily leashed using a treat as a lure. On her walk out of the care centers she jumped up at handler several times, but once in the elevator, handler asked for a sit and she was rewarded for it. She pulls very hard all the way out to the street. Handler asks for a sit again once across the street and she is rewarded for it. Lisa walked along side handler, and handler would reward intermittently. She held her gaze, looking up at handler, and would occasionally sniff the trees/dirt patches on the sidewalk. YouTube video was uploaded to her profile showing her behavior and training session. Lisa jumped on handler a handful of times, handler would body block and when all Lisa's 4 paws where on the floor handler would ask for a sit, and Lisa was rewarded for it (only when her butt was completely on the floor). She began pulling very hard once back in the care centers and was only engaged when in the elevator. She was secured back in kennel.

Summary (5):: 09/06/2024: Handler removes Lisa from kennel. Lisa is jumping up at handler persistently, mouthing and leash biting very intensely, even tearing off handlers' gloves and PPE. This continues until Lisa and handler pass over the care center threshold. Directly outside the gate, Lisa sits politely, and she walks on a loose leash, regularly checking in with handler. Towards the end of her walk, she began jumping up at handler again, handler body blocked and asked for a sit, Lisa complied and walk continued. Upon entering the care centers she pulled very hard and was jumping on her hind legs all the way to her kennel. 09/05/2024: Handler removes Lisa from kennel and takes her out to the street to continue BAT training (EN 09/04). Lisa displays the same/similar behavior. Handler attempts to take her on slightly longer walk but Lisa starts to disengage with the training (no longer taking treats and darting all over the place). Handler turns around, and on the walk back, Lisa re-focuses on the training until reaching a cloze proximity to the care centers (back to darting and pulling hard on leash). She is returned to kennel without issue. 09/04/2024: Lisa is standing at the front of kennel with a neutral body and tail wagging as handler approaches but begins to bark and jump up and down as soon as handler begins to unlock the lock. She pulls hard and is jumping up at handler, mouthing handler, leash biting, and even tearing the PPE. She is redirected with treats but continues to display these behaviors whilst in the care centers. Once outside on the street, she shakes off but continues to pull hard. Handler begins BAT training and Lisa is receptive. Lisa is engaged with handler and very treat motivated. She walks alongside handler with a loose leash, and is rewarded intermittently, using the hand closest to Lisa. She regularly checks in with handler by looking up, and again, will occasionally be rewarded as she usually becomes hyper fixated on treats and/or treat pouch. As soon as she enters the care center again, she begins to pull hard until reaching her kennel. Treats were tossed into kennel to lure her back in.

Summary (6):: 09/3/2024: Lisa is at the front of kennel jumping up and down as handler approaches the kennel. She is leashed using a treat as a lure and brought out onto the street. She continuously is jumping up at handler and treat pouch, as well as leash biting, escalating to mouthing handlers arms/hands. Handler does a treat scatter on the floor and before Lisa has a chance to jump back up, handler lowers hand with treat and rewards for "four paws on the floor." Handler begins playing "popcorn" pattern game, Lisa is receptive, and only jumps up a couple more times, but continues taking treats hard and attempting to mouth handlers hands. The rest of her walk is done by tossing treats in front of her, she begins regularly checking in with handler and is rewarded for maintaining "four paws on the floor." She is returned to kennel without issues. 08/31/24: Lisa is at the front of the kennel with a loose and wiggly body as handler approaches. She is easily leashed using a treat as a lure. She jumps out of kennel and pulls hard as handler takes her outside to the driveway. She sniffs all the LATTE items laid out, eats a couple treats off the snuffle mat, but is uninterested afterwards. Handler takes her out on the street where she continues to pull hard and jump up at handler for treats. Once across the street, handler does a treat scatter and begins BAT training. Lisa is on a long leash, and any time she gets to the end of the leash where there is pressure, handler pauses, and at times retreats back a couple steps, until she turns around and there is no tension on the leash. A reward marker is used and she is very food motivated. She maintains a loose body throughout walk and towards the end of her walk she began walking closer to handler, and at times along side handler. Handler would dispense treat with hand closest to Lisa as she walked alongside them. She was easily returned to the care centers, but balked in front of her kennel. A treat toss was used to secure her in her kennel without further issue.

Summary (7):: 8/24/24: Lisa is at the front of the kennel jumping up persistently and barking. She takes treats frantically and is leashed using a treat lure. She comes out of the kennel quickly and jumps persistently on the handler. She is redirected with treats but when treats do not come quickly enough she will resume jumping and pawing at the handler until more treats are provided. She is taken for a street walk where she pulls very hard, strains against the leash, and continues to frantically jump at the handler. The handler tosses treats ahead to redirect her and she darts towards them. She turns back towards the handler rapidly and mouths their hands lightly when they try to point and direct her to some treats on the floor. Towards the end of the walk she begins to disengage with the handler and sniff on her own. She is brought inside and in the elevator she jumps up a few times before sitting for treats when cued. She is clipped and returned to kennel without issue. 8/7/24: Lisa is at the front of the kennel with a tense, wiggling body. She digs at the kennel door and vocalizes as the handler leashes her. She is taken for a street walk where she persistently jumps up on the handler, pulls very hard, takes treats hard, and winds up to run quickly forwards until she hits the end of the leash hard multiple times. She jumps towards other dogs on her hind legs with a tense body and wagging tail. She does not react to people and persistently jumps towards the handlers hands and treat pouch looking for treats. She is taken for her assessment where she is very overaroused, jumps up intensely and continuously, takes treats hard, mouths the handlers hands, runs back and forth on leash, and cannot settle. Collaring her and handling her are difficult due to her arousal levels. After her assessment she is releashed as she is jumping on the handler and on return to kennel has to be muscled in. She vocalizes as the handler locks the door and exits.

Date of intake:: 8/6/2024

Summary:: Aloof, jumps up on staff in social manner, receptive to treats

ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on Lisa so we cannot be certain of their behavior in a home environment. However, they will need daily mental and physical activity to stay engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct their energy and enthusiasm.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: Level 4

Recommendations:: No children (under 13)

Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to lack of basic manners and social hyperarousal we recommend an adult only home.

Potential challenges: : Basic manners/poor impulse control,Social hyperarousal,Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition,Strength/leash pulling

Potential challenges comments:: Social Hyperarousal/ Basic Manners/ Mouthiness: Lisa quickly becomes over aroused in the presence of people, jumping up and mouthing. Positive reinforcement, force-free training should be used to teach Lisa to remain calm when people and other exciting things are around. Lisa should be rewarded with treats when calm. If they escalate to jumping or mouthing, people should immediately walk away from and separate themselves from Lisa. It is recommended that default behaviors such as "Sit" and "Off" are reinforced to substitute any frustration and teach them to control their impulses instead of simply reacting. We recommend never playing with bare hands, always with a toy, and ending play or attention whenever Lisa puts teeth on skin. Please see handouts on Arousal, Basic Manners, and Mouthiness. Leash Pulling: Lisa has been observed to pull hard on leash. Their adopter must be prepared and able to handle a dog of this strength. It is recommended that they be walked on a front clip harness or head halter, which will help diminish their strength through leverage, and that they be trained using positive reinforcement, reward based training to not pull on leash. Please see handout on Leash Manners.
