Pre-Screener Form Griffin is on the at-risk list due to behavior concerns in his previous home. Griffin displays reactivity toward dogs and unfamiliar people, including lunging and hard barking on walks. Griffin is noted to be a fearful dog and hard bark at unfamiliar staff, and has done so during current stay in the care center. Griffin is social with staff and warms up quickly, and loves playing with toys. Medically, Griffin is apparently healthy. Griffin was surrendered into care due to the owner's personal concerns. Griffin has been in care for multiple stays periodically. His previous owner shared that he enjoys playing tug-of-war and hot potato, chewing on strong toys, rolling in the grass, and going on long walks. He also knows basic cue such as "sit," "lay," and "paw." Griffin's previous owner reported that he was injured during an attack by a group of dogs. Since the incident, Griffin has shown increased reactivity, including lunging at both dogs and unfamiliar people. Despite efforts to keep him comfortable at the Care Centers, he has been observed to hard bark and lunge at neighboring dogs, then bark at staff he sees in the hallway during one of his stays in care. He remains fearful in the shelter environment, has a history of balking and refusing to walk unless gently and repeatedly coaxed. When in play-yards, Griffin is observed to seek exit, staying by the fence-line and gates. Due to these concerns, we recommend that Griffin be placed in a home where he can be the only dog through a New Hope rescue partner.

Summary:: According Griffin's previous owner, Griffin was attacked by a group of dogs. In the Care Centers, Griffin was observed to hard bark and lunge at the neighboring dogs. Outside, he hard barks at staff in the hallway before balking and planting, refusing to walk. Due to these behaviors, a handling assessment wont be conducted on Griffin.

Summary:: According to Griffin's previous owner(s), he does not get along with other dogs, is dog reactive, and will lunge and hard bark when seeing other dogs. Reported to have been attacked by a group of dogs. 2025: 9/10/25: Griffin greets another dog at the gate with a tense body. Summary (5):: 3/23/26: Griffin is sitting at the front of his kennel as handler approaches. He is able to be leashed with ease and is then taken to the behavior room. In the room, he has a loose and wiggly body and would approach the handler to receive pets and treats. He engages in eating a enrichment bone and would approach the handler and lean in to receive more pets. He would walk around the room while chewing a toy in his mouth. He is able to return back to his kennel with no issues. 03/22/26: Griffin is standing at the front of kennel with a neutral frame as handler approaches. He grabs a toy and is leashed with ease, pulling moderately to the Canine Behavior Office. Griffin readily takes treats and will lean into petting along his neck, back and sides. He takes pieces of cheese from a second handler, gently at first but then with more force so he is guided away. He quickly recovers and will accept petting from first handler again. After his session, he returns to kennel safely.

Summary (6):: 03/21/26: Griffin is lying at the back of kennel with a neutral frame. As handler approaches with their leash in hand, Griffin will pick up a plush toy and hold it while he is leashed. He carries his toy to the Canine Behavior Office. He readily takes treats from hand and will "sit" and "shake" for treats. After his session, he is returned to kennel safely. 03/20/26: Griffin is standing at the front of kennel as handler approaches. He hops and barks at the door as handler leashes him and walks to the Canine Behavior Office where he explores the space and takes treats gently from hand. After his session, he is returned to kennel safely. 3/19/26: Griffin is standing at the front his kennel as handler approaches. He begins barking at the door as the handler unlocks it. He is able to be leashed with ease and is then taken outside for a walk. While in the play pen, he explores with sniffing and would constantly mark his territory. He would hard stare at the dogs as they passed by, and is able to walk away on his own. He then pulls hard on the way to the live room. In the room, he is comfortable approaching the hand to receive pets and treats. He then pulls hard on the way back to his kennel and enters with no issues. 09/14/25: Griffin is at the back of his kennel as handler approaches. He is offered a treat and sniffs but does not accept it, he is leashed regardless and pulls moderately out of kennel to the yard. While outside he walks around the perimeter of the yard, stopping to sniff and use the bathroom. His behavior remains the same in the play yard, he sniffs around and uses the bathroom but also approaches other dogs in the neighboring play yards. He is stiff with a wagging tail and is pulled away by handler. At one point when walking around the perimeter of the yard he begins hard barking intensely at a dog he passes. He is brought back to kennel and attempts to baulk but handler continues walking and he quickly gives up, walking to the front of kennel. Handler uses slight muscle to return Griffin to kennel.

Summary (7):: 9/10/25: Griffin is easily leashed and removed from kennel. He is initially walked in the yard and stands by the toy bin. He takes a soft toy handed to him. He is then walked on the street where he wanders and marks. Once in the building he baulks and has to be run into kennel 9/6/25: Griffin displays the same behaviors as of (9/5/25) when he is taken to the driveway and on the street. Please refer to those notes 9/5/25: Griffin is standing at the front of his kennel as handlers approach. He begins barking at the handler as one unlocks the door. He is able to be leashed on a single rope and is taken to the play yard. In the yard, he has a tense body and would stare at the handler with widened eyes and a tense body. He had no interest in treats and had no reactions to dogs or people. On the way back to his kennel, he would refuse to continue walking and sit when the handlers try to coax him forward. He would slowly move forward with only a few steps at a time and stop again when he is fed high value cheese and chicken and eats them. He then has no interest in the high values when they are offered to him in the handlers hands and when they were tossed on the ground. Eventually the handler is able to apply leash pressure and he tries to back away. Eventually he gives in and is jogged back to his kennel and he enters with no issues. 9/4/2025 (LATE ENTRY): Moving forward, Canine Behavior will be administering AM medications. 9/3/2025: Griffin is sitting at the front of kennel with a slightly stiff body, his head slanted downward and giving some whale eye as handler approaches. Handler slowly presents the leash for him to sniff and uses treats as a lure. As he is removed, he pulls hard out of the room and cage fights. Second handler is waiting in the hallway, and as Griffin exits the room he lunges and hard barks at them. Original handler has to use alot of muscle to pull him away. The leash is kept short as he continues to hard bark at people in the hallway as he is taken to the yard. He briefly passes out at the threshold of the yard. He immediately relieves himself as he is walked to the pens, as well as when entering a pen. He runs away from his feces and presses himself up against the fence. Handler walks him around the perimeter while second handlers keep a distance. Once Griffin reaches the top of the stairs he intensely baulks and begins to retreat. Treats, toys, pausing, and coaxing are not effective at first. He continuously pulls back, pancakes, and retreats. Door is propped open, and handler crouches down to use baby voice, he manages to get to the bottom but begins to display the same behavior at the threshold. Multiple handlers attempt to throw different treats and toys, he takes a couple steps again but returns to baulk and retreat. Second handler puts a second leash on the dog, and they use muscle to return him to kennel.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only

Behavior Asilomar: TM - Treatable-Manageable

Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Single-pet home,Recommend no dog parks,Place with a New Hope partner

Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): At the care center, Griffin was reported to growl and hard barks at staff. Similar behavior has been displayed during each stay at the care centers and reported by his previous owners. Out of an abundance of caution, we recommend an adult-only home for Griffin. Place with a New Hope partner: Due to Griffin's behavior in the Care Centers, Griffin should go to a New Hope Partner. Single-pet Home: Griffin's reported behavior –lunging and barking when seeing other dogs- indicates that he is uncomfortable around other dogs. The Behavior Department recommends that Griffin be placed in a home with no other dogs until his behavior towards other dogs can be further addressed once he has adequate time to decompress from the shelter environment. The Behavior Department recommends reward-based, force-free training only to desensitize and counter-condition Griffin using toys or treats to help him associate other dogs with positive experiences. Recommend no dog parks: Due to the concerning behaviors that Griffin has shown during playgroup (see DOG-DOG SUMMARY), we feel that Griffin should not visit dog parks. The Behavior Department recommends that he be socialized in a more controlled setting until his behavior toward other dogs can be further addressed.

Potential challenges: : Fearful/potential for defensive aggression,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration

Potential challenges comments:: Fearful/potential for defensive aggression: Griffin is fearful- growling and hard barking at staff when they attempted to handle him. Positive reinforcement should be utilized to help Griffin associate new people with things he likes such as treats and toys. Please see handout on Fearful/potential for defensive aggression. On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration: Griffin was noted to lunge at dogs and in the Care Centers was observed to hard bark at them. Positive reinforcement should be used to teach Griffin to check in with his handler when he sees his trigger. Please see the handout on On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration.
